WEEKLY FOOD BASKET (WFB)

Overview

The Weekly Food Basket (WFB) is the ration pack issued to citizens of the Federal Confederation for breakfast and dinner, complementing lunch meals served at Federal Canteens and school/work cafeterias.

The program is overseen by the Federal Allotment Agency (FAA), calculated by GAIA under the Annual Plan, produced by the Federal Food Plant (FFP), and distributed via local Federal Allotment Centers (FACs). Movement of WFB consignments follows permitted corridors and sealed-manifest handovers managed with the Federal Courier Service.

The WFB’s legal basis is Section 7 — Nutrition & Food of the Civil Code and Amendment 5 of the Common Constitution (adequate housing and nutrition within available resources).

Historical Context

Instituted after the Great War during the transition to the Gamma Age, the WFB replaced Beta Age private markets with a centralized, vegetarian supply in line with the Peace Treaty. Cecile Maillard championed the basket model as a fair, low-energy distribution mechanism; its standardization is sometimes nicknamed the “Maillard basket.”

Eligibility, Persona Classes & Allotment Cards

Allocation is individualized by GAIA and verified at pickup with the Allotment Card.

Persona classes (workload tiers):

  • A (heavy labor)
  • B (light/clerical)
  • C (retired/limited work)

Adjusters:

  • Age band
  • Medical flags (allergies/intolerances)
  • Temporary work details.

Validity & cadence:

  • Card is annual;
  • One basket/week*per citizen
  • Missed pickups roll to a limited grace window only.

Composition & Dosing Standards

Baskets are seasonal and quota-driven; components are milled/prepared within the Hope nexus (see FFP Mills and Federal Kitchen). Cooking at home is restricted to cold prep and basic reheating; stoves/ovens are prohibited.

Component Examples (by lot/type) Issued As Typical Prep at Home Notes
Staples — Grains Lunor flour; Zelor meal; Rizon meal; Helik flakes/meal Sealed sacks (persona size) Flatbreads, porridges, cold muesli Moisture & hue indices QA’d at FFP HQ
Roots & Greens Bilax (whole or flour-limited); Mirel Crates/sachets Cold salads; boiled/steeped & cooled Bilax flour runs are permit-limited
Fruits & Berries Tandora; Nulberry Fresh or preserved jars Fresh, compotes, cold desserts Jars carry lot/recall labels
Herbs & Spices (sachets) Virel · Tanish · Qular · Zanix Dose-coded sachets Dosing per sheet; heat tiers I–III Issued sparingly under flavor quotas
Condiments Salt; minimal sweetener; oil allotment Small tins/vials Dressing, light frying (canteens), home reheating Home use: reheating only

Note: Lunch meals (hot) are provided centrally at canteens/cafeterias; WFB is designed for low-energy home consumption.

Pickup Procedure (FAC Workflow)

  • Scheduling: Each citizen has a weekly day/time window to reduce queues.
  • Verification: Present Allotment Card → identity check → persona class & adjusters displayed.
  • Issuance: Clerk seals stamped; weights recorded; chain-of-custody ledger signed.
  • Substitutions: Allergies/intolerances processed against GAIA’s substitution table (limited by quota).
  • Containers: Reusable sacks/crates returned/rotated; losses debited to the card.

Production & Supply Chain (Summary)

  • Cultivation: FFP Farmland (~1,000 ha) grows the approved staples and dosing plots for herbs/spices.
  • Processing: Grains milled at the Federal Mills Facility; preserved/cold dishes prepared at the Federal Kitchen.
  • Distribution: Palletized lots move under FCS manifest to FACs; no private hauling.

Compliance & Restrictions

  • Only approved foods(Annual Plan) appear in WFBs; unlisted foods are contraband.
  • Household cooking limits: cold prep, steeping, and reheating only; ovens/stoves banned.
  • Sale or barter of WFB contents is prohibited; lot labels enable recall/enforcement.

Cultural Notes

The basket symbolizes equity and shared restraint: standardized rations in lieu of household variety. Flavor sachets (Virel/Tanish/Qular/Zanix) provide controlled individuality within quotas.

Shadow Economy & Risks

Common abuses include lot-label swaps (e.g., Zelor ↔ Lunor), diverted Bilax permits, and illicit heat-tier sachets. Local sheriffs and FAC clerks audit seals, weights, and recall slips.
