ZELOR GRAIN

Overview

Zelor Grain is a hardy, blue-hued cereal crop native to the Asari Region of VOI 700 D. Known among Native Tribes for centuries as a nourishing staple, it was one of the first plants successfully domesticated by ExoHumans after the crash landing of the Last Frontier. In the Beta Age, Zelor became a cornerstone of the settler diet, valued for its protein-rich seeds and resilience in Asari’s volatile light and soil conditions.

Physical Description & Growth Conditions

Botanical Characteristics

  • Height: 0.9–1.2 meters, stalk-like with dense heads of blue kernels
  • Kernel Color: Deep cobalt-blue, turning lighter when ground into flour
  • Leaves: Broad, silver-veined, adapted to high sunlight and fluctuating heat
  • Soil Needs: Thrives in sandy loam near river valleys
  • Water Requirements: Moderate; survives seasonal droughts better than other cereals

Native Use & Cultural Significance

Among the Native Tribes, Zelor Grain — often called *Thana-Kel* (“Sky Seed”) — was cultivated in small floodplain patches. It featured in porridges, flatbreads, and ritual feasts, symbolizing endurance and community. Ceremonial grinding songs accompanied its preparation, marking it as both sustenance and tradition.

ExoHuman Use in the Beta Age

ExoHumans embraced Zelor as a dietary anchor by late 2626. Farmers near Hope expanded production through selective breeding, increasing yield and kernel density compared to native varieties. Private mills ground Zelor into flour for bread, porridges, and experimental recipes.

At the Last Frontier University in New Kourou, the AI GAIA helped settlers refine recipes and optimize preparation methods. Bread blends combining Zelor with Lunor Wheat became a Beta Age staple. However, some Exohumans developed allergies or intolerances due to unfamiliar proteins, leading to ongoing adaptation challenges.

Zelor in the Gamma Age

After the Great War, cultivation and processing of Zelor Grain was centralized under the Federal Food Plant in Hope. Under Communardism, all grain harvests were redistributed through state-controlled allotments.

Despite centralization, Zelor retained symbolic importance: its blue bread was a familiar comfort across Exohuman communities, connecting Beta Age resilience with Gamma Age collectivism.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

  • Beta Age Hooks: Protecting Zelor harvests from raids, experimenting with new recipes in survival scenarios, or negotiating with Natives over seed rights.
  • Gamma Age Hooks: Smuggling privately bred Zelor strains outside state quotas, or uncovering hidden allergy epidemics linked to black-market grain.
