NULBERRY

Overview

Nulberry is a hardy fruit-bearing shrub native to the river valleys and twilight wetlands of the Asari Region on VOI 700 D. Its clusters of violet berries carry a tangy, slightly sour taste, making them prized by the Native Tribes for both sustenance and ritual symbolism. The name *Nul-Tora* translates to “Bitter-Sweet Gift,” reflecting its dual role as both nourishment and a reminder of life’s hardship.

When Exohumans lost access to Earth berries and fruit preserves after the crash of the Last Frontier, Nulberry quickly filled the gap. By the Beta Age, it was cultivated in Hope and traded fresh, dried, or preserved as jams — becoming one of the colony’s most versatile fruits.

Physical Description & Growth Conditions

Botanical Characteristics

  • Plant Height: 1.2–1.6 meters, with multiple woody stems.
  • Fruit: Small (1–2 cm), clustered berries, deep violet to almost black at maturity, with translucent skins.
  • Flavor: Tangy and sour, with a faint mineral aftertaste unique to VOI 700 D’s soils.
  • Leaves: Narrow, dark green, slightly serrated, with a silver sheen.
  • Soil Needs: Thrives in damp alluvial soils near rivers and lakes.
  • Water Requirements: Moderate; tolerates periodic flooding.
  • Temperature Tolerance: Well adapted to humid twilight microclimates.

Native Use & Cultural Significance

For the Native Tribes, Nulberry was central to both food and symbolism:

  • Preserves & Powders: Berries were dried and ground into tart powders used in sauces and medicinal teas.
  • Ritual Use: Offered in bowls of water during rites of mourning, representing both life’s sweetness and its bitterness.
  • Ornamentation: Violet-stained cloths and body paints marked social rank during ceremonies.

The berries’ balance of sweet and sour came to embody harmony between joy and loss in tribal cosmology.

ExoHuman Use in the Beta Age

ExoHumans embraced Nulberry as a cornerstone fruit, especially for preserved goods. Hope’s settlers refined it into jams, syrups, and fermented drinks, pairing it with Lunor Wheat pastries or Zelor Grain porridges.

At the Last Frontier University in New Kourou, the AI GAIA assisted settlers in adapting Nulberry into Earth-style recipes, including sweetbreads, compotes, and sauces.

Selective breeding in the Beta Age produced bushes with larger berry clusters and milder flavor. However, some Exohumans developed intolerances — allergic rashes, stomach cramps, or sensitivity to the fruit’s natural acids.

Nulberry in the Gamma Age

Following the Great War, cultivation and processing of Nulberry was nationalized under Communardism. All harvests were directed to the Federal Food Plant in Hope, where the berries were processed into standardized rations: dried cakes, syrups, and vitamin extracts.

Once tied to ceremonies and home preserves, by the Gamma Age the fruit lost its cultural resonance, reduced to a regulated dietary supplement in Federal Canteens and workplace canteens.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

  • Beta Age Hook: A shipment of rare, sweetened Nulberry preserves vanishes en route to New Kourou. Were smugglers or Natives responsible — or something lurking along the river?
  • Gamma Age Hook: PCs encounter a black-market trade in “wild Nulberries,” said to taste closer to the original Native fruit than the processed Federal versions. Are they contraband, ritual offerings, or both?
