LUNOR WHEAT
Overview
Lunor Wheat is a high-yield cereal crop native to the fertile floodplains of the Asari Region on VOI 700 D. Known for its silver-tinted grains that shimmer in moonlight, it was revered by the Native Tribes long before ExoHumans arrived. For the Tribes, Lunor — called *Lun-Karra* (“Moon Grain”) — symbolized renewal and cyclical balance, forming part of seasonal rituals.
When the Last Frontier crash-landed and the settlers’ Earth grains failed, Lunor Wheat was among the first native crops adapted into ExoHuman diets. By the Beta Age, it became the backbone of bread and pastry production, anchoring the fledgling colony’s food security.
Physical Description & Growth Conditions
Botanical Characteristics
- Height: 1.0–1.4 meters, with slender, upright stalks.
- Grains: Small, silver-tinged kernels, slightly translucent, clustered in compact heads.
- Leaves: Narrow, blade-like leaves that glimmer faintly under strong light.
- Soil Needs: Requires fertile, moist floodplain soils.
- Water Requirements: High — thrives in periodic flooding cycles.
- Temperature Tolerance: Moderately resistant to heat but vulnerable to drought.
Native Use & Cultural Significance
Among the Native Tribes, Lunor was cultivated in riverside terraces. Breads and ceremonial loaves were prepared during equinox and solstice gatherings, marking the turning of seasons. *Lun-Karra* was often paired with Tandora Fruit juices in ritual meals, embodying the balance of grain and fruit.
Ceremonially, it represented the moon’s renewal, with kernels scattered into rivers as offerings to water spirits.
ExoHuman Use in the Beta Age
ExoHumans selectively bred Lunor Wheat for denser heads and faster ripening, transforming it into the primary source of flour in Hope and surrounding settlements. Mills processed the silver grains into fine flour, which, when mixed with Zelor Grain flour, produced bread that became a staple of the Beta Age table.
At the Last Frontier University in New Kourou, the AI GAIA supported recipe experiments — guiding settlers on blending ratios, fermentation methods, and preservation. These trials gave rise to the first Beta Age pastries, porridges, and flatbreads.
However, settlers’ digestive systems were not adapted to Lunor’s unique proteins. A portion of the population developed wheat-like intolerances, ranging from mild digestive issues to severe allergies, sparking debate over dietary reliance.
Lunor Wheat in the Gamma Age
After the Great War, Lunor Wheat was nationalized under Communardism. Its cultivation and processing became the responsibility of the Federal Food Plant in Hope.
Private cultivation was outlawed, and all surplus was directed into central reserves. While once a symbol of adaptability, Lunor Wheat became an emblem of rationing and state control. Its silver-tinted loaves remained common in Federal Canteens and workplace canteens, though stripped of ritual and variety.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
- Beta Age Hook: A mill in Hope experiments with blending Lunor and Zelor — but their recipe triggers mass allergies. Can the PCs secure alternative food sources before unrest breaks out?
- Gamma Age Hook: Smugglers seek “wild Lunor” seeds to grow outside the ration system. PCs must decide whether to aid them, betray them, or broker compromise with authorities.
