Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)
A promising glow pierces the swirling snow, breaking into the darkness — steady and golden against the black horizon. As you draw nearer, outlines emerge: a wooden house, a barn and a tower crowned by a flickering lamp.
The Halfway Inn — an illuminated oasis in the icy wilderness — stands like a longing for shelter and security made real.
The front yard crunches under your boots. Hoos and Veyras snort in the barn; the air carries a faint scent of smoke and resin. A broad-shouldered man in a thick wool coat waits at the door, his breath steaming in the cold. “Welcome to the light,” he says. “Whatever brought you here stays outside.”
He opens the heavy door, and a wave of warmth pours out — wood smoke, stew, and something peppery-sweet. Inside, the air glows amber. The frost melts from your coats onto the floorboards, which creak like ship hulls. Travelers sit by the fireplace, steaming boots, bowls in hand. For the first time in hours, your hands stop trembling.
Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)
| Trigger / Timing | Read-Aloud or Short Narrative Insert |
| When PCs arrive injured (after rescue from Zark ambush) | You wake to the crackle of fire and the scent of woodsmoke. Your clothes are gone, replaced with rough inn-issue garments. Bandages cross your arms and shoulders. Arjan van Dyk sits nearby, pipe glowing faintly. “Patrol found you near the ridge,” he says. “We patched what we could. Eat first. Then we’ll talk.” |
| When PCs who have arrived by caravan enter | The common room is crowded but subdued. Drivers and passengers murmur over bowls of stew. The smell of cooked Zanix Pepper and Tandora Spice clings to everything. Arjan’s daughter Juna moves between tables with a ladle and tired smile. On the wall near the fireplace hangs a public notice — the same Guarding Trooper bulletin Ezrah Scherkenstein once showed you: “Unknown Male — Detained for Own Safety — Firetown Station.” Nearby, a quiet corner stands apart from the crowd — a handful of empty chairs near the hearth, and a man sitting alone beside them. His coat hangs over the armrest, a Windstrike Rifle leaning within reach. He watches the room through the firelight, expression unreadable. |
| PCs take a closer look at the notice | The parchment looks weathered, edges curled by heat. Seeing it here — far from New Kourou, not far from where the man was found — feels strangely heavier. The grainy photo shows a pale, frostbitten face with hollow eyes. From behind you, a low voice speaks: “Strange guy, don’t you think?” |
| PCs sit down in the quiet corner | The man doesn’t look up at first, just stares into the fire as if thawing a thought frozen for hours. Then, quietly, he says, “Feels good, doesn’t it? After a road like that, the warmth almost hurts.” He lifts his mug, takes a slow sip, and adds without turning, “Storm’s getting worse. Lucky ones made it here on time.” |
| PCs talk to the Old Trooper | The man shifts slightly in his chair, turning his pale eyes toward you for the first time. “Name’s Orven Hale,” he says. “Used to wear the Guarding Trooper badge back on the Last Frontier.” He taps the rim of his mug, a faint smirk tugging at his mouth. “Retired before the crash landing. Some might call that bad timing.” He chuckles softly, then sighs. “Pension from the Free State barely covers stew and a bunk, so I take freelance work out here — finding what’s lost, when someone still cares enough to look.” His gaze drifts toward the notice board. “Like that one.” He nods to the pinned sheet. “Found the poor bastard myself, 20 km away from here. Frostbitten, half-mad, muttering about names he wouldn’t say. My old Trooper colleagues have him now — cell four in Firetown Station.” |
| When PCs pay or order food | Juna brings steaming bowls of Van Dyk’s Mystery Stew and a basket of Tandora-spice flatbread. The warmth feels almost holy after the cold outside. |
| When 4 hours have passed, and the convoy departs | Outside, the storm has calmed to a whisper. Carts creak, Hoos snort, and drivers tighten straps under Joren Kett’s short commands. He raises his hand toward the inn. “Convoy’s leaving! Fifteen minutes to roll!” Inside, the warmth already feels like a memory. Arjan hands you a last mug of hot broth and says quietly, “Road’s clearer now. Firetown’s waiting.” |
3 | Scene Intent
| Scene Type | Player Intents | DM Function / Story Link |
| Rest / Social Scene | Recover, eat, gather information | Connects the outcomes of both ambush scenes and provides exposition about the Nameless Man and Firetown Station. |
4 | Key (N)PCs + Dynamic Cues
| Name | Role / Affiliation | Motivation / Goal | Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play | Wiki Link |
| Arjan van Dyk | Innkeeper · Halfway Inn | Keep guests safe · Maintain peace in his fatherly way | • Greets everyone with “Welcome to the Light. Whatever chased you here stays outside.” • If PCs show aggression → calm but firm, orders Guarding Bots to intervene. • If PCs are injured → offers food first, questions later. | Halfway Inn |
| Juna van Dyk | Daughter (17) · Helper at the Inn | Earn tips · Avoid trouble · Impress travelers | • Friendly toward younger PCs, curious about stories from New Kourou. • Flustered if complimented; jokes about “never leaving the Light.” • If asked about the notice → quietly points toward the Old Trooper. | — |
| Old Trooper (Orven Hale) | Retired Guarding Trooper · Freelance tracker | Share what he knows · Quiet reflection on what’s been lost | • Accepts company by the fire without asking questions. • Offer him a drink → opens up: “Name’s Orven Hale. Retired before the crash — bad timing, some might say.” • Persuasion (DC 11) or friendly tone → reveals he found the Nameless Man near Ralar Ridge, frostbitten and half-mad. • If pressed → adds the man’s strange details: pale skin, black pupils, branded back, and unfamiliar face despite being “one of our generation.” | — |
| Mira Reis | Passenger · Caravan from New Kourou | Reach Firetown | • If she survived the ambush → relieved and withdrawn. Inquisitive PCs → she recounts brief story of being hired by Guy Mikkelstein from the Saloon Gloria and mentions her scars without self-pity • Mention of danger → responds softly, “Every road’s a song waiting to end.” | Mira Reis |
| Hiram Quill | Passenger · Ex-mechanic with Mark of Shame | Reach Firetown to rebuild life after penal labor | • During the ambush (earlier) → one outlaw stared him down but took nothing, leaving others uneasy. At the Inn, he avoids that topic unless pressed. • PCs question him → recounts “iron purgatory” on the Hope–Morningstar route. • If asked about Firetown Station → exhales slowly: “One of the worst months of my life. Ten cells, sometimes all packed — meanest bastards you can imagine. Even the Bot that watched us kept its distance. Armed with a Laser Gun. Let two or three walk at a time.” • If asked whether he tried to flee → bitter laugh: “Dreamt about it every second. But no chance. No windows. Triple locks. Talked through air vents. And outside — that Bot rolled the corridor all night, humming. You hear that sound once, you know: nobody gets out of Firetown Station alive.” • Insight (DC 13) → a flicker of unease crosses his face whenever the Outlaws are mentioned, hinting at a shared past he won’t speak of. | — |
| Six Laborers (from Caravan) | Civilian passengers · | Seeking fun at the Firetown Entertainment District | • If they survived the ambush → exhausted, asleep in the dormitory. • PCs check upstairs → hear snoring. • If awoken → frightened but thankful. | — |
| Joren Kett | Convoy Leader · Experienced Cart Driver | Deliver goods safely to Firetown · Keep schedule | • After about 4 hours of rest, he enters the common room and announces: “Convoy’s leaving in fifteen. Roads are clearing, and the storm’s easing off.” • He checks his cargo manifest and might offer seats to injured or mountless travelers. • PCs who lost their mounts in the Zark ambush can ask for a ride (Charisma DC 13). Success → Joren nods: “Alright, room in the last cart. Don’t spook the Hoos.” • Failure → he refuses politely, citing weight limits, but Arjan or another NPC might intervene on the PCs’ behalf if relations are good. | — |
5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences
| Trigger / Cue (Player Action or Event) | Immediate Reaction / Change | Ripple Effect / Future Hook |
| 🛏️ PCs rest or eat | Recover ½ HP + remove one level of Exhaustion. | Regain composure; set up travel to Firetown. |
| 💬 Speak with Arjan | He checks who’s injured and offers stew. | Establishes tone of safety; Arjan becomes recurring contact later. |
| 💰 PCs order food / drink | Price: Stew (5 K), Lodging (15 K), Laundry (10 K). Caravan travelers eat free. | Reinforces economy and Kourou currency use. |
| 📜 Inspect the public notice | Bulletin titled: “Unknown Male — Detained for Own Safety — Firetown Guarding Trooper Station.” | Confirms next destination and ties to OfSO contract. |
| 🗣️ Talk with the Old Trooper (Orven) | Persuasion (DC 11) or friendly tone opens him up. | He shares intel about the Nameless Man’s discovery and his cell in the Firetown Guarding Trooper Station (cell 4). |
| 🗣️ Ask Old Trooper further about the Nameless Man | Orven frowns, staring into the fire. “Strangest thing I’ve seen in forty years. He looked my age, but I’d never seen him before — and I knew every face from the Last Frontier. We were just thirty thousand souls up there, maybe five thousand my generation. But this one… pale as snow, eyes black as the Dark Sea. Barely spoke, and his back — it had markings, almost a brand. Looked like a symbol — something secret.” | Deepens intrigue; confirms the Nameless Man’s uncanny origin and hints at a hidden organization or experiment. Provides lore hook for the Firetown Station investigation. |
| 🗣️ Ask Hiram Quill why the Outlaws didn’t take his money | He hesitates, rubbing the tattoo beneath his eye — the Mark of Shame from the Free State. If the PCs press him (Charisma DC 12), he finally mutters: “Didn’t know them — couldn’t, they were masked. But sometimes this little mark buys you mercy… or pity. Some folks out here still remember what it means.” | Adds a layer of ambiguity — suggests lingering solidarity among ex-convicts and deepens the theme of blurred morality. |
| 🗣️ Ask Hiram what he has done / why he wears the Mark of Shame | He hesitates. “Thought I could speed up the years till retirement — make some fast cash. Trusted the wrong guys.” Then falls silent. | Hints at his criminal past without full confession; adds moral ambiguity and depth to his character. |
| 🗣️ Ask Hiram Quill about Firetown Station | Hiram exhales. “One of the worst months of my life. Ten cells, packed full. Meanest bastards alive. Even the Guarding Bot kept its distance — thing was armed with a Laser Gun, only ever let two or three of us walk at once.” • If asked whether he tried to flee → bitter laugh: “Dreamt about it every second. But no chance. No windows. Triple locks. Talked through air vents. And that Bot rolled all night — humming like a death rattle.” | Gives gritty intel about the layout and atmosphere of Firetown Station; valuable preparation for the next mission phase. |
| 🗣️ Ask Mira Reis to play a song | Mira hesitates, then smiles faintly. She retrieves a small banjo from her pack and begins to play “The Last Horizon” — a soft, haunting melody that fills the common room. Her voice carries over the crackle of the fire, steady and human in the frozen dark. | Each PC who listens regains 1d4 additional HP and removes one level of Stress (or gains temporary morale bonus if Stress mechanics aren’t used). The scene brightens — even Arjan pauses to listen. Subtly foreshadows Mira’s deeper connection to the OfSO. |
| 🚩 PCs start conflict or draw weapons | Guarding Bots in the corner activate with a warning tone, moving between guests and PCs. | Immediate social penalty; any violence violates OfSO secrecy and reduces Trust with Ezrah (–1). |
| 🚩 Four hours after arrival / rest | Joren Kett (Convoy Leader) gathers the surviving drivers in the yard and calls for departure. | Signals end of rest phase. PCs who lost mounts must decide whether to travel with the convoy or continue on foot. | |
| 🚩 PCs who started the journey on mounts ask Joren for a ride (only if they lost their mounts during the Zark ambush and did not travel by caravan) | Charisma (DC 13). Success → a place is offered on the final cart. Failure → no room, but Arjan may vouch for them once if trust was earned. | If PCs join the convoy → transition directly to Scene 6 — Last Miles to Firetown. If not → they face an independent travel encounter roll on the Dark-Side road. |

6 | DM Notes
- Tone Reminder: Contrast warmth and safety with exhaustion and trauma. The Halfway Inn is a pocket of light on the Dark Side — a breather, not a victory.
- Branch Merge: Both ambush paths converge here. PCs from either route recover, meet the Old Trooper, and hear about the Nameless Man.
- Economy Beat: Caravan passengers eat free; mount-riders must pay. Encourage roleplay to barter or appeal for help.
- Healing Beat: Treat minor wounds with Arjan’s medical kit (no roll). Severe injuries require Firetown care.
- Departure Signal: After roughly four hours of in-game rest, trigger Joren Kett’s call to depart. This closes the scene and transitions to Scene 6 — Last Miles to Firetown.
- Ride Opportunity: PCs who began the journey on mounts but lost them in the Zark ambush can request a seat with the convoy (Charisma DC 13). Success → travel to Firetown safely. Failure → foot travel or creative solutions.
