THE HALFWAY INN
Overview
- Location: Ralar Section of the Trade Route, halfway between New Kourou and Firetown, in the Ralar Region of VOI 700 D.
- Address (Federal Registry): Trade-Marker HWI-55, Ralar Section Roadway D-01
- Surroundings: Nestled in the frozen, barren landscape of the Dark Side, the Halfway Inn (HWI) provides a vital refuge for travelers and couriers braving the harsh conditions of the Trade Route.
The Halfway Inn (HWI) stands at kilometer 55 of the Trade Route’s 110-kilometer Ralar Section—the exact midpoint between New Kourou and Firetown. Founded in 2628 by Arjan van Dyk under a tenancy licence from the Free State of Settlers, the inn provides travelers with a small restaurant, dormitory lodging, and a heated stable where Hoos and mounts (e.g. Veyras) can be rested or exchanged. Throughout the Beta Age it served the once-per-day convoys of the Firetown Courier Service, operating as a privately run road-stop under Arjan’s management. In the Gamma Age it functions as a nationalised way-station overseen by his daughter, Florence van Dyk, for the Federal Courier Service.
Architectural Significance
The Halfway Inn embodies functionality and resilience, designed to withstand the extreme environment of the Dark Side:
- Materials: Thick Morningstar spruce logs sheathed in salvaged Last Frontier hull-panels; insulated with fungal wool.
- Floors: 2-storey main block plus attached lighthouse-tower and 1-storey stable wing.
- Design Purpose: Maximum thermal retention, minimum ornament—everything is angled to shed drift-snow and deflect Dark-Side gales.
Building Structure
Ground Floor
- Entrance Hall: A welcoming area with coat racks and storage for travel gear. In the Gamma Age, a carved wooden lintel over the door bears Arjan’s greeting: “Welcome to the Light! Whatever chased you here, leave it outside.”
- Common Room: A spacious gathering area featuring a large central fireplace for warmth. Guests can share stories, play games, or enjoy meals here.
- Kitchen: A small kitchen to reheat pre-cooked meals supplied by the Federal Food Plant (Gamma Age) or to cook stews over an open hearth (Beta Age).
- Storage Area: Holds provisions, beverages, and essential supplies for the Inn.
Upper Floors
- Dormitories: Shared sleeping quarters with 40 warm beds, equipped with insulating blankets and heated floors for guests and staff.
- Landlady's/Landlord`s Private Room: There is a bed, a wardrobe, a table with a chair and a safe.
- Stable Hand's Private Room: There is a bed, a wardrobe and a table with a chair here.
- Housekeeper's Private Room: There is a bed, a wardrobe and a table with a chair here.
- Communal Facilities: Showers and toilets for guest use, with water heated by the biomass system.
Stables
- Animal Accommodations: Space for 40 Hoos, designed with insulated walls and compost-generated heating for a comfortable environment.
- Cargo Area: Secure storage for carts and goods.
Lighthouse
- Purpose: The Lighthouse of the Halfway Inn serves as a navigational beacon for caravans traversing the frozen and treacherous Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Its flickering light helps guide Federal Courier Service caravans safely to the inn during long, dark journeys.
- Location: A tower rising from the back of the inn, visible from several kilometers away, even in the darkness and frequent icy mists.
- Lighting Mechanism: Instead of relying solely on wood logs, the lighthouse uses biofuel lamps powered by the same composting biomass system that heats the inn.
Look and Feel
Despite the shifting eras and regulations, the Halfway Inn remains what it has always been: a warm, hospitable shelter in a hostile wilderness — a fire-lit refuge from the Dark Side storms.
- Beta Age: Smoke-scented air hangs beneath the beam-dark ceiling, and hoarse laughter rattles around the hearth where frost-crusted boots steam dry. In the kitchen alcove an iron cauldron bubbles over the coals, releasing a peppery aroma that masks something wilder — no one asks what meat Arjan has managed to throw in this time. Tankards scrape across scarred tables, Hoos in the adjoining stable stamp and snort against the night wind, and beyond the shutters the Dark-Side blizzard hisses against log walls that creak but hold fast. On arrival, Arjan’s familiar greeting cuts through the din: “Welcome to the Light! Whatever chased you here, leave it outside.”
- Gamma Age: The Inn is tidier now — floors swept clean, tables set in orderly rows, the air carrying the metallic whiff of reheated Federal ration cans. Deputies of the Federal Sheriff, great-coats buttoned to the chin, stand at a folding trestle just inside the door, stamping allotment cards before waving travellers onward. Beside the hearth hangs a wide slate notice-board, chalked each dawn with convoy timetables and weather glyphs, conversation has settled into measured murmurs and the steady hiss of the biomass furnace feeds a regulated warmth through the floor — orderly heat replacing the inn’s former, chaotic blaze. Above the threshold, Arjan’s words endure in carved timber: “Welcome to the Light! Whatever chased you here, leave it outside.”

Journey and Timing
- Travel Time: The journey from either starting point to the Halfway Inn takes approximately 9 hours, with the Inn marking the official halfway point.
Activities During Breaks
- For Hoos and mounts: Hoos and mounts are led to the stables, where they are fed and cared for by the Halfway Inn’s stable hands. The compost-heated environment ensures their comfort despite the harsh Dark Side conditions.
- For Passengers: Travelers disembark and head to the common room, where they can warm up by the central fireplace, enjoy their meals and engage in light recreation.
- For Coachmen (Gamma Age only): During their break Coachmen are served a meal in the common room and then they head to the dormitories on the upper floors for a well-deserved rest in the shared sleeping quarters. As the Firetown Courier Service of the Beta Age used Butler Bots as cart drivers, they did not take a real break. They just conducted wagon checks, recharged logic cores, and remained on low-power standby.
- For Deputies of the Federal Sheriff (Gamma Age only): Each caravan is accompanied by four deputies, tasked with safeguarding cargo, passengers, and caravans. While two deputies rest for three hours in the dormitories, the other two remain awake to monitor the Inn’s premises and surrounding area for threats.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Beta Age Hooks
- Zark Ambush: The Guarding Bots suffer a logic-core freeze. While the machine reboot, Zark-Tribe warriors creep toward the palisade, hoping to seize Hoos and supplies.
- Murder in the Blizzard: A white-out traps two converging caravans for 48 hours. After 12 hours, a passenger is discovered dead in the dormitory—throat crushed, no weapon found. Suspects include a mysterious passenger, an inn staffer or a Zark scout who slipped inside during the storm …
Gamma Age Hooks
- Raid: Outlaws strike the Halfway Inn under cover of a moon-shadow blizzard, gunning down the two on-duty Deputies before anyone can raise the fire-work alarm. Their aim is bold and simple: drive off all forty Hoos and hitch two freight carts loaded with weapons bound for the Firetown Sheriff’s armory.
