102 Pen and Paper Adventure | Beta Age | The Man Without A Name

SCENE 4b — ZARK AMBUSH IN THE RALAR REGION

1 | Scene Overview

  • Location: Narrow pass, Atrana Mountains, Ralar Region (Dark Side)
  • Type: Wilderness · Combat · Survival
  • Era: Beta Age
  • Tone: Freezing · Primal · Sudden Violence under Green Firelight

Atmosphere & Sensory Cues: Howling wind through narrow rock gullies · snow whipped sideways like shards · Luminofera torches glowing green through the dark · Veyras huffing steam and stamping nervously · distant, echoing growl of beasts unseen

2 | Read-Aloud Description

Snow whips across the narrow pass in the Atrana Mountains, stinging your face and numbing your hands. Your rented Veyra struggles against the wind — slower than Rajid promised. The pass is only three meters wide, sheer drops to either side, and the ice crunches under every step.

Then — a hiss through the gale. An arrow slams into the shoulder of the rented Veyra. The beast rears, screams, hurls its rider into the drifts, and collapses onto the icy ground.

Green fire blossoms appear above the ridge — ghostly torchlight licking down through the storm. Figures descend on ropes and clawed harnesses, wrapped in Glaciok hides and masked in bone. The air fills with snarling commands in a language you barely understand — and beneath it, the deep growl of something huge moving unseen.

The Zark have found you.

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud or Short Narrative Insert
PCs look up the ridge Through the sleet, you spot figures leaping from ledge to ledge — bone masks flashing, green fire reflecting in their eyes. Two ride mounts of their own, flanking with speed.
PCs ready weapons or take cover The wind howls louder, carrying a low whistle — and then the growl answers. From the drift below, a hulking shape bursts through the snow: a Korozo, its blind head swinging, jaws lined with chitinous teeth.
PCs speak or shout A Zark rider lifts his torch and yells over the wind: “Food! Veyra! Magic! Leave, Two Eyes — leave, or die!”
PCs retreat or flee The Veyras scramble, slipping on the ice as another volley of arrows hisses past. Luminofera torches crash into the snow, spitting green sparks. The Zark roar and descend after you, their Korozos following the scent of fear.
PCs have fled the ambush and escape into the storm The wind howls behind you — a blur of green torches fading into white. Your breath burns in your lungs, your hands numb around the reins. Then, through the swirling snow, a faint pulse of yellow light cuts through the dark. The lighthouse of the Halfway Inn — distant, steady, and impossibly warm — beckons from the valley below, promising shelter and the chance to survive.

3 | Scene Intent

Scene Type Player Intents DM Function / Story Link
Combat / Survival Scene Survive ambush · Protect mounts · Decide between fight, surrender, or retreat Parallel encounter to Scene 4a – Ambush on the Trade Route; emphasizes Dark Side hostility and sets up recovery scene at Halfway Inn Aftermath.

4 | Key (N)PCs + Dynamic Cues

Name Role / Affiliation Motivation / Goal Dynamic Cues — How They React in Play Wiki Link
Zark Rider (Leader) Bone-masked raider · Zark Tribe Take supplies, not lives · Feed tribe • PCs surrender → takes gear and Veyra calmly, spares them • PCs resist → signals Korozos to attack • Insight (DC 13) → Not cruel, just desperate
Zark Raider (Footmen ×3) Hunters and scouts Prove worth to tribe • Engage with bolas and hooked spears • Flee if 2 allies fall • Offer truce if food or alcohol is thrown to ground
Mounted Zark (Veyra ×2) Flankers on stolen mounts Capture living Veyras • Focus on dismounting PCs with bolas • Retreat if mounts wounded or torch extinguished
Tamed Korozos (×2) Blind predators trained by scent Hunt by vibration and blood smell • One guards flank; other circles from rear • Whistle (×2) from leader triggers charge • If handler dies → Korozos frenzy uncontrollably
Lexa Rourke Experienced rider · Companion PC/NPC Protects her Veyra “Kelta” • Takes charge under fire • Orders PCs to spread out and move fast • Refuses to surrender unless hopeless Lexa Rourke

5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences

Trigger / Cue (Player Action or Event) Immediate Reaction / Change Ripple Effect / Future Hook
⚙️ PCs try to flee Mounted Zark pursue through the blizzard; Lexa Rourke's Veyra Kelta slips on the icy path (DEX save DC 12 to stay mounted). If failed, Lexa is thrown and pinned under Kelta’s flank; rescuing the animal costs one combat round and risks exposure to attack.
💥 PCs fight back immediately Zark leader whistles sharply — both Korozos charge from the ridge, attacking in tandem. Prolonged resistance risks serious injury or party defeat; if overwhelmed, fade to black and resume at the Halfway Inn.
🗣️ PCs attempt communication or barter Zark leader pauses the assault, shouting broken Trade Tongue: “Food! Magic! Trade!” Success (Persuasion DC 14) → partial surrender; PCs lose half their supplies and valuables but keep lives and the Veyra Kelta.
💀 PCs kill any Zark Survivors retreat into the blizzard, the leader howls a vow of vengeance before vanishing. PCs continue toward the Halfway Inn with one Veyra less and no proof of the attackers.
🧊 PCs offer food, alcohol, or “magic” The Zark hesitate, circling warily; one steps forward to seize the goods. Immediate non-lethal resolution — the raiders take the offerings and withdraw, leaving the PCs exhausted but alive.
🕯️ PCs use Bloom-Mist Ampoule or extinguish torches Luminofera flames die down; shadows consume the ridge. The Zark hiss “Dark takes all!” and pull back into the snow. Scene ends with their retreat; survivors continue toward the Halfway Inn.
🚩 PCs overwhelmed Noise, green light, and snow merge into chaos — then nothing. Fade-to-black recovery: PCs awaken half-frozen inside the Halfway Inn, rescued by patrols, all weapons and gear lost.
🔦 PCs notice the attack at the Trade Route from far away Faint flares flicker on the horizon — mirrored light from another convoy under attack. Optional lore link to Scene 4 – Ambush on the Trade Route.

6 | DM Notes

  • Tone Reminder: Start with silence and biting cold; break it with sudden chaos. Let the ambush feel unfair, not cinematic.
  • Structure: Two short combat phases —
  • 1. Opening Volley (panic & positioning)
  • 2. Negotiation or Escalation (fight, trade, or fade)
  • Environment:
  • * Visibility 15–20 m (snow & wind)
  • * Ranged attacks –2 penalty
  • * Cold exposure (CON save DC 10/hour)
  • * Narrow pass — no side-by-side combat (max 2 abreast).
  • Lexa Rourke: Acts as stabilizer NPC. If she loses Kelta, emotional arc extends to Firetown.
  • Parallel Cue: PCs may see distant red flare from the Trade Route Ambush — showing both stories unfold simultaneously.
  • Failure Transition: If unconscious or captured → skip to recovery at Scene 5 — Halfway Inn Aftermath.
