GUARDING BOTS

Guarding Bots were specialized Service Bots developed to support law enforcement aboard the Last Frontier. Originally created before the ship's departure from Earth, their development was later fine-tuned with the support of the Guarding Troopers — the exohuman protective and enforcement force active during the Alpha and Beta Ages.

These robotic units combined high-grade surveillance technology with physical enforcement capabilities, assisting Guarding Troopers in patrolling corridors, monitoring secure zones, and managing public order. After the crash landing on VOI 700 D, Guarding Bots continued to play a vital role alongside the Guarding Troopers, especially in administrative and military buildings of the Free State of Settlers. Their eventual ban in the Gamma Age under the Peace Treaty marked the end of their official use — but not their presence.

History and Development

The Last Frontier Era

  • Developed by Olympia Cybernetics in cooperation with the Security Division of the Last Frontier.
  • Designed for corridor patrols, surveillance of restricted areas, and immediate threat response aboard the ship.
  • Integrated with the GAIA System for remote command and monitoring.
  • Equipped with 360° camera systems, facial recognition software, and machine learning algorithms to identify anomalies and assess threat levels.
  • Authorized models were outfitted with non-lethal tools; high-level units had access to firearms, stored in locked internal compartments.

The Beta Age: Civil Reassignment and Tactical Deployment

  • Widely used for entrance control and as security guards in key buildings of the Free State of Settlers.
  • Deployed to protect political, scientific, and infrastructure hubs during the unstable early years of settlement.
  • Heavily modified during the Great War for combat purposes — some units received advanced armor plating and upgraded targeting systems.
  • Guarding Bots became common in Police operations of the Guarding Troopers, checkpoints, and prisoner transport scenarios.

The Gamma Age: Prohibition and Rogue Use

  • Banned in 2631 under Supreme Councilor Aisha Patel’s Peace Treaty reforms due to their offensive capabilities and power consumption.
  • Deactivation campaigns were initiated, but many units were either stolen, salvaged, or reprogrammed by Individualists and Outlaws.
  • Firetown's underworld and remote settlements still utilize rogue Guarding Bots for protection, intimidation, or illegal enforcement.

Appearance and Design

Guarding Bots use a Humanoid Heavy‑Sentinel Chassis prioritising intimidation, durability and 360° awareness.

Chassis Spec

  • Height/Mass: 2.10 m, 145 kg (reinforced alloy frame)
  • Mobility: Bipedal 26‑joint gait; sprint 40 ft in bursts; gyroscopic balance resists shove attempts
  • Manipulators: Power gauntlets (grip strength 1 200 N) plus Compliance Stave—telescopic electro‑truncheon integrated into forearm dock
  • Sensor Suite: Helmet‑style dome with quad‑band optics (UV/Vis/IR/LIDAR), 3D acoustic mapping, atmospheric chem‑sniffer

Materials & Finish

  • Endoskeleton: Tungsten‑reinforced titanium spars, shock‑absorbing fibre core.
  • Outer Armour: Matte basalt‑black poly‑ceramic plates rated to deflect low‑calibre firearms and shrapnel (< 7 mm).
  • Servo Covers: Kevlar‑weave sleeves mitigate joint fouling and blunt‑force trauma.
  • Unit Markings: White alphanumeric unit code on chest; patrol LED arc shifts from blue (idle) to amber (challenge) to red (engaged).

Integrated Surveillance & Enforcement Systems

  • Face & Gait Recognition Engine: Compares live feeds to FHCS / Trooper watchlists in < 0.3 s.
  • Movement Heat‑Map Predictor: Flags erratic motion indicative of aggression (+2 to initiative rolls).
  • Compliance Stave: Non‑lethal electro‑truncheon; variable voltage allows stun or muscle‑override incapacitation.
  • Stun Beam Emitter: Chest‑mounted photonic disabler (optics‑safe shield at 50 cm).
  • Mag‑Cuff Launcher: Wrist‑deployed magnetic restraints lock onto ferrous collars.

Core Software & AI

  • GAIA‑AUX Sentinel Kernel s5: Threat‑tier evaluation, by‑the‑book escalation ladder, and multilingual command bark.
  • Crowd‑Control Protocols: Calculates vector fields to herd crowds without stampede risk.
  • Evidence Chain Module: Encrypts sensor logs for admissible evidence in investigations.

Energy Supply and Power Management

  • Powered by a high-capacity Quantum Fusion Battery (QFB), optimized for energy-intensive tasks.
  • Standard operation span: 6 days under patrol or monitoring mode.
  • Combat engagement and firearm deployment reduce operational time by up to 60%.
  • Standby mode activates at 5% battery—unit locks down and disables all weapons.
  • Recharging outside of official channels is illegal—rogue units rely on hacked stations or portable generators in outlaw zones.

Technical Specifications for Gameplay

  • Armor Class (AC): 16
  • Hit Points (HP): 95
  • Speed: 30 feet
  • Primary Role: Law enforcement, building security, crowd control, combat support.

Actions:

  • Restrain (Grapple Attack) | Effect: Contest target’s Strength or Dexterity to immobilize. | Cooldown: None.
  • Surveillance Sweep (Tactical Scan) | Effect: Reveals hidden or disguised characters within 60 feet. | Cooldown: 10 minutes.
  • Tactical Takedown (Unarmed Melee) | Damage: 1d8 bludgeoning | Additional: DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.
  • Firearm Deployment (Optional, if enabled) | Damage: 2d6 ballistic | Range: 60 feet | Ammo Capacity: 12 | Cooldown: Reload requires full turn.
  • Disabling Shock (Stun Beam) | Effect: Target must succeed DC 14 Constitution save or be stunned for 1 round. | Cooldown: 5 rounds.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Beta Age: Potential Storylines and Encounters

  • Security Missions: Players may need to bypass or cooperate with Guarding Bots during facility infiltration or investigation.
  • Hack or Hijack: A storyline may revolve around reprogramming a Guarding Bot for espionage or personal protection.
  • Ambush Risks: Guarding Bots stationed in sensitive buildings may trigger alarms or call reinforcements upon detecting unauthorized activity.
  • Moral Dilemma: Dealing with Guarding Bots executing harsh protocols in a post-crash society can spark ethical decisions—especially if innocent civilians are involved.

Gamma Age: Potential Storylines and Encounters

  • Black Market Tech: Smuggling an armed Guarding Bot for an outlaw leader might expose players to Federal forces or betrayal.
  • Glitching Patrols: A malfunctioning unit misidentifying players as threats creates a tense standoff or chaotic combat scenario.
  • Restoration Quest: Players may be tasked with reactivating an old Guarding Bot to protect a remote community — sparking debate over legal risks.
