GAIA is a Tier-1 artificial general intelligence that originated as the command cortex of the colony ark Last Frontier. Designed to orchestrate starship systems, crew welfare, and long-term settlement planning, GAIA became the single most influential technology in ExoHuman history.
After Day Zero, in the Beta Age, its once-planet-wide cloud fragmented into Local GAIA Hubs, situated in the Community Centers of each settlement, the largest being “The Kernel” under the Settler’s Council Building in New Kourou.
This fragmentation created an immense logistical challenge: updating the disparate hubs without a connected network. This problem was solved by the timely founding of the New Kourou Shellac Corporation (NKSC) in 2625, which pioneered a novel method for encoding gigabytes of data onto durable, fungal-polymer records ("Shellac Records") that could be physically distributed.
Every Friday the compressed firmware burst first travelled over the Shortwave Radio Network maintained by the Weber Communication Company; only once captured did each settlement’s scribes cut the data onto local shellac, ensuring even the most remote hub stayed in sync with The Kernel.
In the Gamma Age, GAIA — now administered by the newly founded Federal GAIA Agency — serves as the digital backbone of a largely analogue civilisation, powering governance, resource allocation, and crisis modelling while running on dwindling Quantum Fusion Batteries and intermittent geothermal feeds. The firmware updates and public advisories it generates are furthermore encoded onto Shellac Disks. In the Gamma Age, these weekly disks are produced by the corporation's nationalized successor, the Federal Shellac Manufactory (FSM), and distributed from The Kernel to provincial hubs by the Federal Courier Service.
| Domain | Beta Age | Gamma Age |
| Policy Drafting | Crafts settler edicts & referendum texts. | Generates draft legislation aligned with Communard sustainability metrics. |
| Economic Planning | Balances QFB allocation, collects economic figures for the Contact Persons and the Settler's Council | Produces *Annual Economic Plan* & work-credit allotments. |
| Judicial Analytics | Advises the Settler’s Council on dispute simulations. | Feeds sentencing matrices to the Federal Court. |
| Crisis Simulation | Fire/flood evacuation modelling. | Adds black-market energy-leak detection & social-unrest heatmaps. |
| Health & Education | Coordinates nano-surgical queue, assigns apprenticeships. | Scores FGEs and matches graduates to labour quotas. |
How Exohumans *see, hear, and feel* GAIA has changed dramatically across eras.
These UX shifts mirror GAIA’s journey from omnipresent starship companion to rationed civic oracle — a transformation driven less by code than by the planet’s relentless energy austerity.
| Era | Primary Power | Runtime Characteristics |
| —– | ————— | ————————- |
| Alpha Age | Redundant shipboard fusion core | Always-on; no throttling. |
| Early Beta | Dedicated QFB (full-charge) + geothermal taps in Firetown | 24/7 operation; background tasks off-loaded at night. |
| Late Beta | Same QFB at 60 % capacity | Four-hour “sleep mode”; non-critical processes queued. |
| Gamma Age | Re-cored QFB at 40 % + degraded geothermal | 8-hour sleep mode; high-resolution simulations restricted to crisis windows only. |
Power Bottleneck: Without fresh QFBs, compute-intensive nanoforge algorithms and long-range forecasting modules remain *offline* until a new energy paradigm emerges.
