ZHANG "VENOM" LANGLEY

Race and Faction

Background

Zhang Langley was born aboard the Last Frontier to a culturally diverse family with Chinese and Canadian roots. Both of his parents were medical researchers who introduced him to chemistry from a young age. Following the landing on VOI 700 D, Zhang’s parents were assigned land to found a farm, where he worked with his father on experimental chemical solutions to enhance crop yields. Tragically, one such experiment went awry, resulting in a chemical explosion that cost Zhang all his fingers.

Exempted from military service due to his injury, Zhang contributed to the Great War effort as a chemist, producing essential agricultural chemicals. After the war, Zhang began an independent drug operation, utilizing his chemistry skills to manufacture narcotics like Frostbite (which he invented). His small but lucrative business in the Hope Region caught the attention of Jane Mendoza in 2635. Recognizing Zhang’s potential, Jane offered him a position within the gang rather than eliminating him as a rival. Since then, Zhang has overseen the gang’s drug production, refining operations to maximize efficiency and profit.

Current Role

Job Title: Head of Drug Operations, Associate

Responsibilities:

  • Manages the production, trafficking, and distribution of narcotics for the gang
  • Oversees a network of hidden labs and distributors, ensuring a consistent and profitable supply chain
  • Expands the gang’s drug empire across the Habitual Belt and Dark Side, with major hubs in secure locations
  • Focuses on refining drug formulas and production methods to reduce costs and boost quality

Personality

  • Traits: Cold, calculating, profit-driven
  • Behavior: Zhang is methodical and detached, preferring logic over emotion. He is less interested in the gang’s anarchistic ideals, focusing instead on maximizing revenue and control over the drug trade.
  • Values: Unlike other gang members, Zhang is uninterested in the political motivations behind the gang’s actions. He prioritizes efficiency, control, and the financial success of his operations over personal loyalty or ideals.

Physical Attributes

  • Height: 1.75 meters
  • Build: Lean and wiry
  • Appearance: Zhang has short dark hair, sharp facial features, a cold, calculating gaze, and is typically dressed in attire that conceals his injuries. His custom-made gloves, designed to look like normal hands, hide the loss of his fingers and help him project a controlled, commanding presence. Zhang’s right forearm bears an infrared tattoo of the gang, which is visible only under specific lighting conditions.

Combat Statistics

Due to his lack of fingers, Zhang cannot handle traditional weapons effectively. However, he has adapted to use specialized tools in combat situations.

  • Armor Class (AC): 15 (through agility and light protective clothing)
  • Hit Points (HP): 70

Actions:

  • Chemical Injector: Zhang has a concealed wrist-mounted injector for administering a paralyzing agent. | Damage: 1d6 + 2 poison damage, with a chance to paralyze the target for 1 turn (Constitution save to resist)
  • Toxic Gas Release: Zhang carries a small, throwable gas capsule that releases a debilitating toxin in a 5-foot radius. | Effect: 1d8 poison damage (targets must succeed on a Constitution save or be poisoned for 1 turn)
  • Kick: In close combat, Zhang can deliver a swift, calculated kick.
  • Damage: 1d4 + 1 blunt damage

Special Abilities:

  • Venomous Influence: Zhang can leverage his knowledge of toxins to create subtle, undetectable poisons. This ability grants his toxins a +2 bonus to DC for detection and identification.
  • Chemical Mastermind: Zhang has an acute understanding of chemical reactions and can use his expertise to create situational advantages, like improvised toxins or makeshift explosives in certain environments.

Motivations and Goals

Zhang’s primary motivation is profit and control within the gang’s drug trade, viewing his role as a way to maintain financial independence and influence. He harbors no allegiance to the gang’s political ambitions, preferring to remain behind the scenes and focus on expanding his drug operations. Zhang’s ultimate goal is to grow his empire without drawing unnecessary attention to himself, avoiding the volatility and danger of Jane Mendoza’s more chaotic leadership style.
