GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT
Overview
- Location: Outside Firetown’s Town Wall, Ralar Region
- Address: 1 km from Main Gate
- Surroundings: Close to the Federal Prison (Gamme Age only), the (Federal) Copper Mine and the Firetown Tier-1 Energy Redistribution Node as well as the Quantum Fusion Recalibration Station.
Commissioned in 2627 and financed, built, and operated by the Trade Guild of New Kourou under a contract guaranteeing the Free State of Settlers' purchase of its output, the Geothermal Power Plant was the ExoHumans’ most powerful energy installation on VOI 700 D. Its pair of 10 MW turbines harnessed volcanic steam for continuous baseload electricity and district heating loops, making it the largest-capacity power source of the Beta Age and the primary feed for Firetown’s Tier-1 Energy Redistribution Node.
History
- Construction: Broke ground early 2626 as Firetown’s signature Beta-Age energy project
- Operational Peak: 2626–2631, feeding both district heat and full-flux ERN charging
- Nationalization & Transition: Following the Peace Treaty, the plant was nationalized in 2631 and operations were transferred to the Federal Allotment Agency — its capacity then folded into the new Federal Geothermal Power Plant in 2632
Architectural Significance
- Materials: The plant is assembled from stacked industrial cargo containers, reinforced with salvaged spaceship hull plating from the Last Frontier. Containers are partially sunk into volcanic ground to stabilize them against tremors and wind shear.
- Design: Entirely functional and deliberately inelegant. Every visible element communicates heat, pressure, and risk — the architecture of necessity rather than planning.
- Wells & Loops: Dual‐well extraction system with surge‐buffer tanks and pre-insulated heating ducts
Building Structure
Perimeter & Exterior Systems
- Steam Yard:Open-air container cluster with exposed pipes, pressure buffers, and vent stacks. Constant steam discharge creates dense fog banks in cold conditions.
- Maintenance Walkways: Wooden and steel catwalks connecting turbine housing, valve clusters, and inspection points.
- Guard Post: Reinforced container at the main gate, housing a Guarding Bot and checkpoint controls.
Heat Extraction Wing (Container Block A)
- Houses wellheads, pressure regulators, and primary steam collectors
- Oversized surge tanks buffer pressure spikes
Turbine Hall (Container Block B)
- Three tandem turbines rated at 7 MW each
- Emergency bypass lines allow manual dump of excess steam
- Control & Monitoring Center
- “Situation Room” with cross-linked SCADA consoles
- Analog backup panels and manual overrides for treaty-mandated fail-safe
Control & Monitoring Center (Container Block C)
- SCADA consoles and analog backup panels.
- Manual override levers required by treaty-mandated fail-safe regulations.
- Observation slits and reinforced porthole windows facing the turbine hall.
Maintenance Bay (Container Block C)
- Heavy-duty repair pits beneath turbine shafts
- Parts storage for seals, gaskets, and precision drill bits
- Staff Quarters & Facilities
- Break rooms with thermal bunks warmed by waste steam
- Locker rooms and combined men’s/women’s AuroraSan restrooms
Look and Feel
The Geothermal Power Plant never truly rests.
A deep, constant rumble vibrates through the container walls as superheated steam roars through exposed pipes. Condensation beads on metal surfaces and drips onto black volcanic gravel below, where ice forms and cracks underfoot. Steam clouds billow endlessly, torn apart by icy winds from the Ralar highlands.
Inside, corridors are narrow and metallic, lit by harsh industrial lamps and emergency strips. The air smells of sulfur, wet stone, hot metal, and oil. Control rooms hum with generators and analog consoles, their surfaces worn smooth by gloved hands. Valves hiss, pressure gauges tremble, and warning placards are scratched and half-burned.
Outside the perimeter, the wilderness presses close: frozen ash, volcanic rock, and darkness. The glow of Firetown’s industrial ring is visible only in the distance. Here, heat is survival — and failure would be catastrophic.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Plant Manager (1): Coordinates operations and liaises with Firetown’s Contact Person
- Geothermal Engineer (1): Monitors well integrity and steam flow
- Turbine Operator (2): Oversees turbine load and ERN feed coupling
- Maintenance Bots (6): Conduct routine mechanical checks and leak repairs
- Cleaning Bot (1): The Cleaning Bot maintains walkway cleanliness and drains
- Guarding Bot (1): The Guarding Bot secures the main gate
- Combat Drone (1) The Combat Drone surveils the perimeter
Public Access & Operations
- Access Level: Restricted — no civilian entry
- Operational Hours: 24/7 in three shifts per day (06:00–14:00, 14:00-22:00, 22:00-06:00)
Security Measures
- Perimeter Fence: 3 m metal fence with spike-topped parapet
- Controlled Entry: Main Gate secured by a Guarding Bot, armed with Guarding Troopers Stun Gun and accompanied by Combat Drone.
- Regular Patrols: A local unit of the Guarding Troopers, assigned to Firetown's energy sector; rotate every 6 hours
Player Interaction Possibilities
Legal Interactions
- Apply for a job at the Plant Manager
- Escort turbine spare parts from Firetown Courier Service
- Audit steam pressure logs on behalf of Firetown’s Contact Person
- Maintain the Service Bots as employee of the New Kourou Robotic Syndicate
Illegal Interactions
- Sabotage a steam line to force a settlement-wide blackout
- Co-opt a Maintenance Bot to smuggle spoofed power readings
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
- The Vanishing Steam – Firetown’s Contact Person confides that a shadowy investor behind the Entertainment District may be using the Geothermal Power Plant’s service tunnels and high-pressure steam chambers to make “troublesome” competitors disappear without a trace. The PCs are hired to infiltrate the plant’s restricted maintenance corridors, follow the trail of steam-scoured footprints, and uncover whether the plant’s vast underbelly is serving as a secret execution chamber — or if something even more sinister lurks beneath Ralar’s fumes.
