Background
Rogan Sokolov was born aboard the Last Frontier]. He joined the [[guarding_troopers_headquarters|Guarding Troopers as an apprentice, showing strong physical ability and an unshakable sense of fairness. However, after the crash — later known as Day Zero — his poor eyesight disqualified him from active service, a rejection that left a lasting scar on his pride.
Following the founding of the Free State of Settlers, the Sokolov family settled in Morningstar, where his father and younger brother found work at the Fogwood Sawmill Inc.. Rogan sought independence, first taking jobs as a caravan guard for the New Kourou Courier Service along the Trade Route and later working in Firetown as a freelance bouncer in the Entertainment District. His size and quiet discipline earned him steady employment at venues such as the Saloon Gloria, where he became known for defusing violence before it started.
It was during one of these nights that Ezrah Scherkenstein noticed his composure. After watching him escort a drunken Guarding Trooper and an OfSO courier out of a dispute without throwing a single punch, she offered him part-time work as a retrieval and protection operative. Rogan has since accepted assignments from the Office for Special Operations (OfSO) —usually when his moral compass or “sense of fairness” demands it.
He is a man who avoids adventure unless convinced it serves justice. Once persuaded, however, his loyalty is immovable.
Roles by Age
Beta Age (2626–2631)
- OfSO Field Muscle & Retrieval: Lifts, digs, carries, and shields; handles extractions and door duty on sensitive meets.
- Freelance Bouncer (Firetown): Night security at the Saloon Gloria and neighboring venues; hears the city’s rumor current and knows faces linked to the secret so called “Cartel” — but won’t work for them.
Personality
- Traits: Stoic, dependable, dry-humored, protective
- Behavior: Counts loads under his breath; checks exits first; drinks water, not spirits, on shift
- Values: Honest pay, safe exits, keeping civilians out of harm
Physical Attributes
- Height: 1.92 m
- Build: Broad-shouldered, powerlifter frame; callused hands
- Appearance: Simple work jacket, reinforced gloves, knee braces; carries a heavy pry-bar and a belt knife
- Tells: Squints at distant signs; tilts head to read lips in noisy rooms
Combat Statistics
- Armor Class (AC): 14 (reinforced work coat, bracing)
- Hit Points (HP): 32
- Speed: 9 m (on foot); prefers cart travel behind Hoos via the New Kourou Courier Service
- Proficiencies: Athletics, Intimidation, Insight, Perception, Survival, Smith’s Tools, Improvised Weapons
- Weapons: *Improvised blunt Weapons and Guarding Troopers Stun Gun
Actions
- Hydraulic Pry-Bar (Melee, 1.5 m): +5 to hit; 1d8 bludgeoning (two-handed 1d10); on hit may Shove 1 m or open a light latch as a free interaction.
- Shoulder Check (Bonus, adjacent): Target makes DC 13 STR save or is knocked prone (non-lethal emphasis).
- Hook & Haul (Utility): As an action, anchor a line to pull a medium obstacle or hoist an ally; grants advantage on the associated Athletics check.
Special Abilities
- Endurance Engine: Once/encounter, treat exhaustion penalty as one step less for the next hour (long hauls, rubble digs).
- Human Shield (Reaction): When an adjacent ally would be hit by a melee attack, Rogan can interpose; the attack targets him instead and deals –2 damage (braced stance).
- Door Sense: Advantage on checks to spot barroom tension, concealed weapons, or ambush posture in crowded venues.
- Bouncer’s Rolodex: In Firetown’s Entertainment District, Rogan can identify a relevant rumor contact once per scene (DM names who; grants +1 on the next Persuasion/Insight with that contact).
- Flaws — Slow Mounts & Bad Eyes:
- No Fast Mounts: Rogan refuses to ride Veyras; overland missions with mounts move at walking/cart pace unless convinced otherwise.
- Uncorrected Vision: Disadvantage on ranged firearm attacks beyond 6 m; ranged thrown items are unaffected. He secretly carries a folded pair of glasses but avoids using them.
- Firearm Skeptic: If forced to use a gun, first attack each scene is at –1 (hesitation); he prefers blunt/edge tools.
Motivations and Goals
Keep people safe, keep exits clear, bring everyone home. Long term, Rogan wants to hike and chart the hazardous western cuts of the Ralar Region—not for fame, but to mark safe paths for others.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Use Rogan to turn hazard scenes into solvable problems: lifting gates, bracing collapses, and body-blocking ambushes. Reward his cart-first travel with steadier supply lines and fewer animal mishaps, while letting fast-mount missions create social friction. Lean on Bouncer’s Rolodex to open rumor doors in Firetown, and on Human Shield to protect fragile PCs during negotiations.
