The Pen & Paper Adventures of One Hundred and Two Lightyears Away bring the world of VOI 700 D to the table as interactive stories.
Players step into the chaos of the Beta Age or navigate the fragile order of the Gamma Age, shaping their own paths through politics, survival, and frontier conflict.
All adventures use the official 102 ruleset (based on the Open Game Licence) and are available as free PDF modules. Predefined Player Characters make it easy for beginners to start immediately, while advanced groups can use the Scene Template to build fully custom missions anywhere on the planet.
Tonality & Distinctive Look’n’Feel
One Hundred and Two Lightyears Away uses the Open Game Licence system as its mechanical foundation — but the experience differs fundamentally from classic fantasy Pen & Paper games like Dungeons & Dragons.
102 is not a world of wizards, dragons, or mythical magic. Instead, it is a hard-edged sci-fi western, grounded in realism, scarcity, and the consequences of human failure.
The tonality of 102 Pen & Paper Adventures is defined by several core elements:
- A realistic frontier scenario: Life on VOI 700 D is not heroic — it is improvised, dangerous, and shaped by harsh economics, political tension, and survival instincts.
- High-tech roots meet post-crash scarcity: ExoHumans arrived with sophisticated technology, but after the landing disaster most high-tech tools are rare, damaged, or strictly regulated. Characters rely on jury-rigged gear, industrial tools, and clever improvisation rather than magical abilities.
- A planet shaped by tidal lock — and alien logic: Though 102 avoids classic fantasy tropes, VOI 700 D still offers wondrous and terrifying encounters.Its unique structure — a blazing Desert Side, an ice-black Dark Side, and the fragile Habitual Belt between them — has produced bizarre wildlife, extreme flora, and predators adapted to perpetual night or searing heat. These phenomena are natural, not magical, but often feel just as uncanny.
- A gritty, cinematic sci fi-western atmosphere: The mood mixes frontier tension, personal grudges, small settlements holding against the elements, and the looming threat of conflict with Native Tribes or other factions. Lantern light, dust, frost, improvised weapons, caravan trails, backroom deals, and moral ambiguity frame every adventure.
In short: 102 delivers the tension and agency of D&D — but in a universe of realism, scarcity, politics, and frontier survival.
Beta Age Adventures
The Beta Age is a time of danger, freedom, and upheaval. Humanity has only just settled VOI 700 D, and the early frontier is raw, violent, and unregulated. These adventures explore the fading liberties of the Free State of Settlers and the rising tensions that will ultimately lead to the Great War.
Beta Age modules typically include:
- high-risk frontier travel
- early encounters with Native Tribes
- settlement politics and survival conflicts
- shifting alliances before the Peace Treaty

Gamma Age Adventures
The Gamma Age introduces a new kind of tension — structured, political, and psychological. Humanity now lives under the Federal Confederation, bound by the Peace Treaty and monitored by GAIA. The dangers are less wild but more systemic: black markets, conspiracies, social pressure, and the ever-present divide between Communards and Individualists.
Gamma Age modules typically include:
- political intrigue and inter-settlement conflicts
- black-market operations and criminal networks
- consequences of the Peace Treaty
- moral dilemmas in a society under surveillance

Sandbox Adventures
Players and Dungeon Masters can craft their own sandbox missions using the official Scene Template. Community-created scenes and full adventures can be submitted to the official Sandbox Section of the 102 website, allowing the storyworld to grow collaboratively.
Player Characters
102 Pen & Paper Adventures support two approaches to character creation:
- Predefined Player Characters — ready-to-play figures with fleshed-out backstories, stats, flaws, and tactical features.
- Fully Custom Characters — created using the adapted D&D ruleset described in the Player Character Creation Guide.
Predefined Player Characters are designed to help groups jump into the story quickly, ensuring mechanical balance and narrative cohesion within the 102 universe. Each character sheet reflects the realities of the age they belong to — whether the chaotic freedom of the Beta Age or the regulated tension of the Gamma Age.

Beta Age PCs
All official Beta Age adventures currently take place under the umbrella of the Office for Special Operations (OfSO). The OfSO operates in the grey zones between diplomacy, espionage, frontier justice, and criminal mediation. Since the organization rarely deploys its own personnel, it relies heavily on freelancers — skilled individuals hired on short contracts to handle missions too delicate, too remote, or too deniable for regular forces.
This means: All playable Beta Age characters are freelancers of the OfSO, brought together by circumstance rather than loyalty. Each brings their own motivations, flaws, and expertise into the dangerous early years of VOI 700 D.

Gamma Age PCs
All official Gamma Age adventures take place within the regulated, post-war society of the Federal Confederation. During this era, Player Characters operate within a world shaped by strict resource control, political factionalism, and the silent pressure of GAIA-driven oversight. Unlike the frontier chaos of the Beta Age, Gamma Age characters navigate social hierarchies, black markets, bureaucratic labyrinths, and the consequences of the Peace Treaty.
As with the Beta Age, predefined Player Characters are available for quick and balanced gameplay — but none have been released yet.
