(FEDERAL) COPPER PLANT

Overview

The Federal Copper Plant is the principal exohuman smelting, refining, and fabrication facility on VOI 700 D, supplying elemental copper, alloys, and industrial fittings across the Federal Confederation. Founded in the Beta Age as a private enterprise, in 2631 it was nationalized under Communardism at the beginning of the Gamma Age. At the same time, the Firetown Tool & Machine Works was merged into the plant, consolidating Firetown’s metallurgical capacity into a single Federal hub managed by the Federal Allotment Agency.

History

Beta Age (Founded 2627)

  • Founding Date: 3 September 2627
  • Founder: Trade Guild of New Kourou, with Jeremias Molding as Founding Director
  • Context: Launched before Firetown’s official settlement, secured by Guarding Bots and Free State of Settlers Combat Drones due to its high‑risk investment; copper was the sole new metal resource alongside salvaged Last Frontier parts.
  • Staffing: Primarily exohuman engineers, quality managers, logistics experts, administrative executives, and chiefly Service Bots (Manual Labor, Maintenance, Cleaning).
  • Innovation: Spurred Beta Age copper‑based products (e.g., Currency Kourou coins, wiring, utensils).

Gamma Age (Nationalized 2628)

  • Nationalization and Merger: 2631 — Both the Copper Plant and the Firetown Tool & Machine Works were nationalized and consolidated into a single Federal Copper Plant under the Federal Allotment Agency.
  • Integration of Workshops: The forge halls, lathe galleries, and assembly wings of the Tool & Machine Works were repurposed as federal workshops, producing turbine couplings, wagon fittings, and quantum fusion battery connectors.
  • Environmental Protocols: Emission controls to protect the Dark Side ecosystem.
  • Current Management: Overseen by Plant Manager under Federal Allotment Agency directives.

Architectural Significance

The architecture of the Federal Copper Plant is designed to withstand the harsh environment of the Ralar Region while maintaining operational efficiency:

  • Construction Material:Built from dark volcanic stone sourced from the nearby Ralar volcano, providing robust insulation against Firetown's constant -20°C temperatures.
  • Floors: 2
  • Windows and Insulation:The building has no windows to maximize heat retention. Instead, thumb-wide viewing slits are incorporated for minimal external visibility while maintaining thermal integrity.
  • Heating System: Connected to Firetown’s (Federal) Geothermal Power Plant, ensuring a consistent and sustainable flow of heat through insulated pipes.
  • Lighting: Unlike many other buildings in Firetown, the plant is illuminated with electric lighting, ensuring optimal visibility for industrial operations.

Look and Feel

Beta Age

The cavernous halls resonate with the rhythmic clatter of Service Bots tirelessly shuttling ore and finished parts under the watchful gaze of exohuman supervisors. The air is thick with copper dust, warm exhaust from smelting furnaces, and the mechanical hum of automated conveyors. Flickering luminescent panels cast a pale green glow over towering stacks of ingots and bins of raw ore.

In the cantina, guild executives gather over hot pots of tea, the scent of heated metal lingering amid the metallic clinks of charging docks. Demonstration rooms showcase gleaming prototypes of copper utensils and coined tokens , their polished surfaces reflecting the soft industrial lighting.

Gamma Age

Faint electric lighting illuminates the smelting floor and illuminating exohuman operators clad in thermal gear as they monitor furnace controls or refine copper batches. The scent of ozone mingles with softly powered downbeat of electric motors and the distant hiss of geothermal steam pipes.

The staff lounge is a warm refuge, with wooden tables, candlelight, torches, steaming bowls of hearty stew, and social chatter. Consultant offices overlook the production floor through reinforced observation windows, where polished alloy samples glimmer in display shelfs.

Security Measures

Beta Age

  • Guarding Bots & Combat Drones: Free State of Settlers–deployed sentry units patrol perimeters and rail lines.
  • Secured Perimeter: Reinforced fencing surround the facility.
  • Rail Escort: Each ore train is accompanied by Combat Drones during transit to the plant.

Gamma Age

  • Guards of the Local Sheriff Deputies: Two deputies of the Local Sheriff patrol the premises 24/7.
  • East Gate Guards: The East Gate is permanently stationed by a deputy to ensure the safe passage of the transport-trains, maintaining strict security protocols.
  • Accompanied Rail System: Each transport train on the rail system connecting the Federal Copper Mine and the Federal Copper Plant is accompanied by an employee of the Federal Copper Mine. This employee monitors the cargo during transit, ensuring the safe and accurate delivery of raw copper.

The (Federal) Copper Mine and Plant are seamlessly connected by a rail system designed to transport raw copper efficiently.

Rail System:

  • A narrow-gauge rail line facilitates the movement of ore from the mine to the plant, ensuring a steady supply of raw materials for processing.
  • The train consists of 12 carts, specially designed with insulated compartments to prevent copper from freezing in Firetown's constant subzero environment.
  • In the Gamma Age, the exterior of the carts is coated with Luminofera Dualis, a bioluminescent material that makes the train visible in the dark and enhances safety along the route. In the Beta Age, the carts were equipped with rechargeable electric lights powered by Quantum Fusion Batteries.

Animal-Powered Locomotion:

  • The trains are pulled by Hoos, robust draft animals known for their endurance and adaptability to Firetown's icy climate.
  • Trains operate continuously, traveling back and forth between the mine and the plant, maintaining a steady flow of copper ore.

Travel Time and Operations

  • The rail route between the Federal Copper Mine and the Federal Copper Plant takes 1 hour each way, allowing for efficient transport and minimal delays in the supply chain.
  • In the Gamma Age, each train is accompanied by an employee of the Federal Copper Mine, who oversees the cargo during transit to ensure its safety and proper delivery. In the Beta Age, a Combat Drone accompanied the train.

The East Gate:

  • After the founding of Firetown in 2628, a dedicated East Gate was constructed in Firetown’s Town Wall to accommodate rail traffic.
  • The gate is equipped with reinforced doors and a secure locking mechanism to protect against unauthorized access and potential raids.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

The Federal Copper Plant offers a high-stakes industrial environment perfect for espionage, sabotage, and dramatic rescue or protection missions.

Adventure Hook Example Beta Age

  • Ambushed Courier Carts – A large shipment of copper destined for the Kourou Coin Press was ambushed by masked criminals wielding refurbished Combat Drones. Contraband copper was diverted en route to New Kourou. The Guarding Troopers Headquarters tasks the party with tracking down the perpetrators, recovering the stolen cargo, and dismantling their drone escort.

Adventure Hook Example Gamma Age

  • Consultant Hostage Crisis – The Jane Mendoza Gang has hijacked five Federal Copper Consultants returning from Hope via the Federal Courier Service. They demand a delivery of specialized copper products (wire, pipes) to the Jumping Jack under threat: one consultant will be executed each week until their demands are met. The PCs must intercept or outmaneuver gang couriers, and devise a plan to rescue the hostages before time runs out …
