The Federal Allotment Centers (FACs) in New Kourou are essential distribution hubs where citizens can receive essential goods bases on their Allotment Cards. These centers are part of a larger network established by the Federal Allotment Agency (FAA), designed to meet the basic needs of citizens within the Exohuman Federal Confederation’s economic model, known as Communardism. Each center can serve up to 4,000 residents, ensuring efficient distribution across New Kourou’s community.
History
The four FACs in New Kourou opened on February 28, 2633, under the leadership of Supreme Councilor Aisha Patel and the Communard government. This was part of a larger shift from the money-based system of the Beta Age to the communal allotment system. Additional centers in Firetown, Hope, and Morningstar followed on January 1, 2634, as the system expanded to cover the entire ExoHuman settlements.
Architectural Significance
- Construction Material: Mycelium blocks, a sustainable material, mark a shift toward eco-friendly architecture in New Kourou. Although mycelium construction is the future goal for the settlement, current limitations in resources, time, and labor mean that only the Federal Council Building and the four Federal Allotment Centers are built from these blocks. This rarity makes the Allotment Centers visually distinct and symbolic of an envisioned, permanent ExoHuman presence on VOI 700 D.
- Distinctive Roof: Each Allotment Center features a leaf-shaped roof, representing nourishment and protection for the community, echoing the ethos of Communardism and emphasizing the centers as sources of sustenance.
- Vertical Gardens: The facades of the FACs in New Kourou are adorned with vertical gardens that produce fruits and vegetables. These gardens reinforce the commitment to sustainability and self-sufficiency, aligning with the values of the Communards and acting as both practical food sources and symbolic displays of sustainable living. In Firetown, due to harsh environmental conditions, these vertical gardens are absent, demonstrating the need for adaptable architecture across different locations.
The Allotment Centers serve as architectural landmarks in New Kourou, standing in striking contrast to the patchwork structures made from spaceship salvage. They represent an aspirational vision for the settlement’s future, signaling a lasting ExoHuman presence and a departure from the temporary structures that characterize much of New Kourou.
