FREE STATE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM (BETA AGE)
Overview
The Free State Health Care System in the Beta Age was built on the advanced nanotech medical platform of the Last Frontier but constrained by widespread crash damage and an acute energy crisis. A single hospital in New Kourou provided the only true “Alpha Age” level care; every other settlement maintained nearly fully automated Medical Stations — assembled from salvaged shipboard tech and staffed by Medical Bots and Butler Bots. Contact Persons in each town, overseen by the Settlers’ Council, ensured energy delivery, bot upkeep, and the employment of a Chief Physician.
Preventive screenings, routine check‑ups, trauma stabilisation, and nano‑therapies were handled locally; critically ill or highly specialized cases were evacuated to New Kourou Hospital. Prescription drugs came exclusively from Schreder Pharma Inc., which held a seven‑year monopoly on legal formulations — distributed via automated pharmacies and the Frontier Quickdraw Network (SP‑AMP Broad‑Spectrum and NeuroCalm Nano‑Vial vending machines required no prescription).
Historical Context
- Pre‑Crash (Alpha Age): Shipboard nanotech pods delivered zero‑contam care automatically.
- Post‑Crash Crisis (2624–2625): Fire destroyed most medical bots and infrastructure; infection and injury mortality spiked.
- System Rebuild (2625–2631): Salvaged hull composites and bioreactors from the Last Frontier formed the backbone of Medical Stations in every major settlement. Contact Persons negotiated power quotas and oversaw a sparse network of nanotech labs.
- Schreder Monopoly (2625–2630): Schreder Pharma’s New Kourou plant produced all legal drugs under a state‑issued exclusive licence.
- Communard Nationalisation (2631): With the rise of Communardism and formation of the Federal Confederation, the state system gave way to the Federal Health Care System— but the Beta‑Age network remained operational until then.
Medical Stations & Bot Roles
Each Medical Station featured:
- Reception & Triage: Butler Bot logs patients, verifies scripts, and routes to care.
- General Care & ER: Medical Bots perform diagnostics, administer nano‑injectables, stabilise trauma, and run vaccination campaigns.
- Nano‑Lab: A compact suite calibrates and sterilises nanites for therapy.
- Chief Physician: Oversees advanced procedures, consults on complex cases, liaises with New Kourou.
Bots were the lifeblood — reprogramming or removing Medical Bots was a crime under Beta Age law.
Drug Production & Distribution
- Producer: Schreder Pharma Inc. (New Kourou) held the exclusive licence for all legal drugs, ensuring uniform quality and formulations.
Distribution Channels:
- Automated Pharmacies: State‑operated outlets in each mayor settlement, fully automated, prescription‑only for most medicines.
- Frontier Quickdraw Vending Machines: Deployed at high‑traffic points—stocked with SP‑AMP Broad‑Spectrum and NeuroCalm Nano‑Vial (no prescription required).
- Prescription Model: Medical Stations issued scripts; patients redeemed them at automated pharmacies. Only SP‑AMP and NeuroCalm were available without prescription via vending.
Nanotechnology & Energy Constraints
Nanotech diagnostics and treatments demanded Quantum Fusion Battery power, rationed heavily. Medical Stations ran on minimal baseloads.
