THE FEDERAL NEWS AGENCY

Overview

The Federal News Agency (FNA) based at the Federal News Building at SE Thoreau Road 2 within New Kourou’s Public Services Ring is an authority of the Federal Confederation in the exohuman Gamma Age on Planet VOI 700 D. Created under the Communard government, the FNA was established by the Federal Council following the passage of the Independent Press Act in 2634, which laid the foundation for an independent public service news system. Its primary mission is to manage and administer this news system, providing citizens across all reservations with reliable and accessible information.

Responsibilities

  • Federal Shortwave Communication Network: Since 2631, the FNA has been responsible for maintaining and managing the shortwave communication network, a crucial infrastructure that connects the Exohuman settlements. Originally designed and built by the Weber Communication Company (WCC) during the Beta Age in the Free State of Settlers, the network facilitated inter-settlement communication, law enforcement coordination, and emergency alerts. The FNA took over this network as part of the broader nationalization of communication infrastructure.
  • The Weekly Gazette as the FNA’s Public Service News Medium: With limited access to digital technology in the Gamma Age, the FNA opted for a print medium, leading to the creation of The Weekly Gazette. This weekly newspaper, printed in the Federal News Building in New Kourou, serves as the primary news source for the population. The Weekly Gazette is distributed through Federal News Lounges (FNLs) across New Kourou, Hope, and Morningstar, providing public access to news in communal spaces. In Firetown, due to local conditions, the newspaper is delivered directly to subscribers.
  • Federal Printing Office: The Federal Printing Office, situated within the Federal News Building in New Kourou, is an essential division of the FNA. This office is responsible for producing all printed materials commissioned by government institutions and authorities, including The Weekly Gazette and books for Federal Libraries across the settlements. Working in coordination with the Federal News Agency’s editorial and distribution teams, the Federal Printing Office ensures timely and efficient production of these materials, supporting the FNA’s mission to inform and educate the ExoHuman population.
  • The Federal Encyclopedia: The FNA oversees the publication and distribution of the Federal Encyclopedia, a cornerstone of knowledge in the Gamma Age. Created under the supervision of the Federal Council and written by GAIA, the Encyclopedia consolidates historical, scientific, and social knowledge for the benefit of ExoHuman society. Its first edition was published in 2635, and updates are managed by the Federal Encyclopedia Editorial Team, which operates under the FNA's umbrella. The Encyclopedia is printed by the Federal Printing Office and made available in all Federal Libraries, ensuring resource-efficient access to critical knowledge in the absence of the “Web.”

The organizational structure of the FNA

  • Federal News Agency Director: The FNA Director has overall responsibility and strategic direction for the agency. He or she ensures that the Weekly Gazette meets journalistic standards and FNA's public service mission.
  • Regulation and Standards Department: This department is responsible for developing and enforcing regulations and standards in the field of journalism. It sets guidelines for ethical conduct, accuracy and independence, and monitors compliance.
  • * Administration and Finance: An administrative department handles the organizational and financial affairs of the FNA. It also procures - based on the Annual Plan of the GAIA system - the necessary funds, materials, machinery for the Weekly Gazette.

Criticism of the FNA and the funding of the Firetown Post

The Individualist party accuses the FNA of not having created an independent news system, but one that serves to anchor the political opinion of the Communards in the population. This would be because the Federal News Agency was created by Supreme Councilor Aisha Patel's administration, by the Communards.

This criticism was rejected by the FNA, which pointed out that the selection of the editor-in-chief was not made by the Federal Council, but by GAIA (who is configured by the party that has the majority of seats in the Federal Council). And the proposal would subsequently be confirmed by an independent seven-member panel whose members come from all human communities.

However, the individualists do not accept this argument because the parameters according to which GAIA makes decisions may be set by the ruling party. Accordingly, GAIA would only select chief editors who fit the Communards' government program.

To counterbalance the supposed “state propaganda,” the Individualists founded the Firetown Post in 2634, which is also published weekly.

The Firetown Post is officially considered the party information of the Individualists (since a second newspaper would not have been allowed due to lack of resources). The editorial office is located in Firetown.

Because the Firetown Post is not registered as a news medium, it may not be reviewed for journalistic quality and ethical standards by the FNA's Regulation and Standards Department.
