2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions

Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)

As you leave the shadow of the Atrana Mountains, the eternal dark behind you dissolves into the violet-grey twilight of Asari in the Habitual Belt. New Kourou sprawls ahead — noisy, tangled, and alive.

You push your way through the organized chaos of your main settlement toward the food market—past butler bots, settlers, Veyras, and transport carriages pulled by Hoos. Then finally, you see it again: that inconspicuous, plant-covered building cobbled together from containers, from which you began your arduous journey a few days ago. You're back! But your mission isn't quite over yet…

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)

Stage 1 — Arrival & Threshold

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
PCs approach OfSO HQ A soft chime echoes behind the recycled metal door as you ring the bell. Somewhere inside, something skitters — and a sharp, familiar chirping sound answers you. Bubi is awake.
Door opens Ezrah Scherkenstein stands framed in warm interior light and creeping vines. Her eyes flick from face to face, taking you in faster than politeness allows.

—

Stage 2 — Debrief Before the Storm

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
Entering Ezrah’s office The room smells faintly of soil and old ship metal. Lamps cast a soft, artificial twilight over hanging plants and stacked drawers. The settlement outside fades as the door closes behind you. Ezrah gestures toward low chairs near her cluttered desk. “Start from the beginning,” she says. “And don’t skip anything.”
Nameless Man present The man remains standing near the wall, shoulders hunched, eyes fixed on the floor. He does not sit. He never takes his eyes off the door.

—

Stage 3 — The Betrayal

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
Unannounced entry Without a knock, the office door opens. A man steps in calmly, followed by two broad-shouldered figures. His smile is polite, practiced. “Apologies,” he says mildly. “I was told time was… sensitive.” The Nameless Man stiffens. His breath catches.
Weapons drawn & execution The man inclines his head — a minimal gesture. The others move instantly. Crude firearms come up. There is no shouting. No warning. Two shots crack through the room. The first drops the Nameless Man where he stands — dead before he hits the floor. The second slams into Ezrah’s chest, throwing her back against the desk. She gasps, bleeding, but alive. Silence follows — heavy, deliberate.

—

Stage 4 — The Opaque Wall & Hostage Pressure

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
Ezrah triggers the safety wall With a heavy, muffled FWUMM, something slams down between you and the attackers. The light shifts abruptly. Whatever just dropped is solid — opaque. You can’t see through it. The sound changes immediately. Footsteps beyond the wall sound distant and wrong, voices blurred but close. Ezrah staggers back against her desk, one hand pressed hard to her side. Blood seeps between her fingers, dark against the fabric. Her breathing is shallow. She swallows and forces the words out, voice weak but controlled. “Martin built that wall… two weeks ago. My idea. His hands.” She tries to continue — then stops. Her eyes widen. “Fuck.” She looks up at you. “It doesn’t just come down. It also alarms him. His hut. In the yard.”As if on cue, sound carries again — a door opening somewhere beyond the wall, a startled shout, a brief scuffle. Then the calm voice of the Hand returns, closer now, perfectly steady:“We have your friend. Martin. “I think he wants you to open the wall,” the Hand continues evenly. “Otherwise… we would have to kill him.”
Ezrah reveals the basement hatch Ezrah forces herself upright, blood soaking into her clothes. Her voice is weak, breath catching between words as she slides a planter rail aside. Beneath it: a square floor hatch, half-hidden. “Basement corridor,” she whispers. “Leads to the backyard… behind them.” She swallows, steadying herself. “You can come up close. Surprise them.” Her hand trembles as she points down. “There’s a Laser Gun down there. In a black wooden box. I was storing it for a … client.” Her legs give way before she can say anything else. Ezrah collapses to the floor, unconscious, breathing shallow but alive.

—

Stage 5 — Basement Corridor & Repositioning

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
PCs descend into the basement corridor The hatch closes softly above you. Darkness swallows everything — thick, absolute, like the depths of the Ralar Region. For a few heartbeats, you see nothing. Then your eyes begin to adjust. Dim maintenance strips flicker awake along the corridor walls. The air smells musty. Above you, sound carries clearly now: raised voices, boots scraping, orders barked in irritation. The Hand is guessing. He doesn’t know where you went. As your vision settles, you notice stacked storage crates along the walls — all black, uniform, deliberately unmarked. Ezrah’s cache.

—

Stage 6 — Backyard Junction & Final Assault

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
PCs emerge from the backyard hatch Leaves and soil settle as you push up through a hidden hatch — buried beneath a massive potted plant that dominates the center of the yard: roughly as tall as a grown human, and wide enough to hide several bodies. The yard is cramped and utilitarian, boxed in by patched walls and creeping vines. To one side stands Martin “The Tinkerer” Gagnon’s shed — a simple structure with a normal wooden door, and it isn’t locked. Opposite it is the OfSO back entrance: an oversized service door, but it’s covered by a weathered fabric curtain that shifts slightly with the airflow. Beyond that curtain you catch the outline of a narrow interior corridor — and somewhere down it, Ezrah’s office, where the perpetrators stand in front of the opaque safety wall, holding Martin hostage. You can’t see them from here. But you can hear enough to know this isn’t stable. Whatever you do next, you have to move — as Martin is one wrong breath away from being executed.

—

Stage 7 — Aftermath & Evidence

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud / Narrative Insert
After the fight (once it’s truly over) (No fixed read-aloud here — run it as consequences and cleanup: first stabilize allies, then secure the HQ, then search the bodies.)

5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences

Stage 1 — Arrival & Threshold

Trigger / Cue Immediate Reaction / What Happens Clues & Consequences
PCs arrive at OfSO HQ (any arrival) The bell is answered; Ezrah appears and assesses them in a single, fast scan (faces, gear, exhaustion, injuries, blood). Sets Ezrah’s baseline attitude for the whole scene (supportive / pressured / suspicious / cold). PCs may attempt a first impression (optional: CHA (Persuasion) DC 12) to slightly soften her tone.
🕒 Arrive on time WITH the Nameless Man Ezrah moves immediately: she ushers everyone inside fast and checks the street before closing the door. Ezrah trust: high. Stage 2 starts cooperative and focused.
⏱️ Arrive late WITH the Nameless Man Ezrah lets you in, relief edged with frustration. She checks time and asks one sharp question first: “Who saw you?” Ezrah trust: medium. Stage 2 starts under pressure.
🚫 Arrive on time WITHOUT the Nameless Man Ezrah does not step aside at first. Her first words are flat and immediate: “Where is he?” Ezrah trust: low. Stage 2 becomes interrogation-style; Ezrah assumes failure until proven otherwise.
⛔ Arrive late WITHOUT the Nameless Man Ezrah lets you in with cold professionalism. No warmth. No relief. Just procedure. No reward. Ezrah trust: very low. PCs are mentally downgraded as field assets; Stage 2 proceeds tense and transactional.

—

Stage 2 — Debrief Before the Storm

This stage establishes tension, character dynamics, and false security. Nothing bad happens yet — but everything here determines how hard the betrayal hits.

PC Action / Cue Immediate Reaction / What Happens Consequences / Notes
PCs introduce the Nameless Man to Ezrah The man flinches slightly at his name being spoken. He keeps his gaze low, hands clasped tight. When Ezrah speaks to him directly, he nods once but does not answer. Confirms his fear and fragility. PCs gain a subtle emotional bond with him, making his later death hit harder.
PCs offer the Nameless Man a seat He shakes his head immediately and presses himself closer to the wall. He remains standing, silent, eyes fixed on the door. Reinforces that he expects someone to come for him. PCs who notice this may roll WIS (Insight) DC 12 to sense anticipatory fear.
PCs ask about payment or formal handover If the PC have arrived on time and with the Nameless Man, Ezrah will guarantee them a payout of the agreed reward. If the PC have not arrived on time but with the Nameless Man, Ezrah will offer them a reduced reward (25–75% of the agreed reward, DM decision by delay). She just asks for a little patience, as she has not yet settled the bill with the customer. Reinforces false safety. No consequence — this is normal procedure.
PCs ask when the Client’s Hand will arrive Ezrah pauses. “They haven’t contacted me since the initial meet-up.” A beat. “Which is unusual.” This is the only explicit warning sign in Stage 2. PCs who latch onto it may reposition or prepare before Stage 3.
PCs check exits, windows, or room layout Ezrah notices but does not comment. The office appears ordinary, almost cozy. PCs gain basic spatial awareness (desk, window, plants). No sign yet of the safety wall or hatch.

—

Stage 3 — The Betrayal

This stage represents the fraction of a second between recognition and violence. PC actions here are instinctive, not tactical.

PC Action / Reaction Immediate Outcome Consequences / Mechanics
PCs hesitate or do nothing while the Hand and his henchmen enter The moment passes. The situation resolves without them. No rolls. The execution proceeds exactly as described in the Read-Aloud. Stage 4 begins immediately.
PCs try to verbally intervene (shout, plead, accuse) The words land too late. No one reacts to them. No roll. Confirms loss of initiative. PCs cannot prevent the shots.
PCs attempt to physically interfere instantly (dive, shove, tackle, disarm) A desperate interruption attempt before the shots. Ezrah still gets shot, The Nameless Man cannot be saved under any outcome.
PCs attempt to draw weapons immediately The movement is noticed — but not respected. DEX (Sleight of Hand) DC 15. On success: PC may start Stage 4 with weapon in hand. On failure: weapon not drawn in time.
PCs focus on Ezrah immediately after the shots They register her condition before panic sets in. WIS (Medicine) DC 10. On success: PCs understand she is alive but critically wounded and has seconds to act/speak. This allows her Stage 4 guidance to occur clearly.

—

Stage 4 — The Opaque Wall & Hostage Pressure

This stage begins immediately after the safety wall drops. The PCs are cut off visually, under pressure, and on a clock.

PC Action / Reaction Immediate Outcome Consequences / Mechanics
PCs freeze or argue about what to do Time bleeds away while voices continue beyond the wall. No roll. The Hand’s leverage escalates naturally. Ezrah’s condition worsens.
PCs rush to Ezrah first They reach her before shock takes over. WIS (Medicine) DC 10: Confirm she is alive but bleeding badly. On success, she can deliver all guidance (wall, alarm, basement, laser gun) clearly before fainting.
PC provides wound care to Ezrah Bleeding is slowed. WIS (Medicine) DC 12: On success, Ezrah will recover faster. On failure, she worsens (disadvantage later).
PCs try to talk back through the wall (threaten, negotiate, bluff) The Hand listens — calmly. CHA (Deception or Intimidation) DC 15: On success, buy a few extra seconds before escalation. On failure, the Hand accelerates pressure (hostage threat intensifies).
PCs search the office for exits They confirm the room is sealed except for one option. No roll. Leads naturally to either the window (false exit) or Ezrah’s intervention (open the basement hatch).
PCs check the office window They see two armed men already waiting outside. No roll. Confirms there is no frontal escape. Raises urgency.
PCs search for improvised weapons or tools They spot usable objects in the room. Gain access to improvised items (planter bracket, maintenance pole, kettle). These matter later if PCs re-enter the building.
PCs follow Ezrah’s instructions and open the basement hatch They commit to movement instead of negotiation. Immediate transition to Stage 5. Ezrah collapses unconscious behind them.
PCs hesitate after the hatch is revealed Ezrah loses consciousness mid-sentence. From this point on, no further guidance is available. Delay increases risk to Martin and Ezrah.
PC stays with Ezrah while others move She is not alone. Allows continued stabilization but reduces combat manpower later.

—

Stage 5 — Basement Corridor & Repositioning

This stage begins the moment the PCs descend into the basement corridor.

PC Action / Reaction Immediate Outcome Consequences / Mechanics
PCs pause to let their eyes adjust Shapes and depth slowly resolve in the darkness. No roll. After a few seconds, PCs clearly identify stacked black crates and navigable space.
PCs scan the basement corridor The space reveals itself as storage, not transit-heavy. WIS (Perception) DC 12: On success, PCs notice multiple sealed black crates, uniform and deliberate — likely Ezrah’s cache.
PCs open a black crate Inside: controlled, professional storage. One crate contains the Laser Gun in a black wooden box. Others may hold tools, ammo, or client gear (DM discretion).
PCs listen to the sounds above Voices carry clearly through the structure. WIS (Insight) DC 12: PCs realize the Hand does not know where they went. His orders are probing, not precise.
PCs move quietly toward the backyard exit They reposition without drawing attention. DEX (Stealth) DC 13: On success, PCs emerge with surprise potential in Stage 6. On failure, their approach is audible but still unseen.
PCs split up in the basement The corridor allows it — barely. Allowed, but increases risk. Any failure in later checks may isolate a PC temporarily.
PCs retreat back toward Ezrah instead They find her unconscious and bleeding. WIS (Medicine) DC 12: Stabilizes her temporarily but costs precious time. Martin’s danger escalates.
PCs hesitate or debate too long The situation degrades offscreen. No roll. DM escalates stakes: louder threats, raised voices, or imminent violence against Martin.

—

Stage 6 — Backyard Junction & Final Assault

This stage begins the moment the PCs emerge from the basement corridor into the backyard.

PC Action / Situation What Happens (Concrete & Weapon-Aware) Consequences / Mechanics
PCs remain hidden near the plant hatch The yard stays quiet. Inside, voices are controlled but tense. No roll. PCs have initiative advantage if they strike first.
PCs sneak to the curtain and carefully peek inside The fabric parts just enough. Inside the narrow corridor: The Client’s Hand stands offset with pistol ready. Two henchmen flank Martin — one weapon aimed at his head, the other controlling his arms. DEX (Stealth) DC 13. Success: full tactical awareness. Failure: fabric rustles → all weapons snap up.
PCs peek behind the curtain Clear view: Hand stands offset, pistol low but ready. Two henchmen flank Martin. Full tactical awareness granted.
PCs enter corridor openly Sound echoes. All weapons rise instantly. Immediate escalation. Hand shouts one command: “One move — he dies.”
PCs attempt negotiation / distraction The Hand responds calmly, weapon steady. CHA (Deception / Intimidation) DC 15. Failure → countdown begins (see below).
PCs split actions (some sneak, some engage) Combat fractures the space. Risky but viable. Failure may expose Martin to immediate harm.
PCs initiate combat Gunfire erupts. The Hand acts first if not surprised. Roll initiative.
Exterior guards hear gunfire Boots pound. Door guards enter from front corridor within 2 rounds. Reinforcements join unless blocked or delayed.
A PC attacks a henchman holding Martin The hostage becomes unstable. If attack misses or fails: Martin takes lethal damage (unless prevented).
PC disarms or incapacitates Martin’s captor Martin stumbles free or drops prone. Martin is no longer a valid hostage. Hand adapts tactics immediately.
PC shields Martin / pulls him clear Bullets snap past. STR / DEX contest vs attacker. Success saves Martin; failure risks injury.
Exterior henchmen enter the building Reinforcements arrive aggressively, firing into the corridor. Pressure spikes. PCs may become flanked if poorly positioned.
PCs delay too long during standoff The Hand enforces control. Countdown: after 2 failed rounds → Hand orders execution.
Any attacker is cornered or restrained Automatic response. Suicide capsule triggered (see Stage 7).

—

Stage 7 — Aftermath & Evidence

PC Action / Trigger Immediate Outcome Evidence / Consequence
PC checks Ezrah (previously stabilized) She is weak but alive. Pain-managed, conscious or semi-conscious. No further danger. She can speak later and formally close the operation.
PC checks Ezrah (not stabilized earlier) Her condition is critical. WIS (Medicine) DC 12 now determines survival. Failure may lead to death.
PCs successfully free Martin alive Martin steadies himself. He looks at the PCs for a long second, then gives a short, sincere nod. “You didn’t have to do that,” he says quietly. “But you did.” Personal Debt Established: Martin openly states that he owes the PCs. This can be called in later for gear, shelter, or favors.
PC secures the headquarters Silence returns. Smoke, blood, overturned furniture. Scene control achieved. Time to investigate safely.
PC examines attacker corpses Fractured teeth, chemical burns in the mouth. Confirms tooth-embedded suicide capsule protocol — trained, disciplined operatives.
PC searches the Client’s Hand He is dead and lying motionless on the floor. Loot: 820 Kourou, three carved wooden chips from Saw’s End, a Guarding Trooper combat knife, a half-empty Schnapps flask, Frontier chew strips — and a handwritten note.
PC examines the handwritten note The paper is a DIN A5 notebook sheet with a printed logo of Hale & Hook Outfitters Morningstar at the top. The handwriting is neat, precise, and geometric — the lettering style faintly resembles directional wall signage aboard the Last Frontier. The note reads only: “SE Public Services Ring Rd 5, NK”. This is not a reminder — it’s a field briefing artifact, suggesting the Hand relied on externally prepared instructions, likely written in Morningstar
PC searches interior henchmen They are dead and lying motionless on the floor. A receipt from Django’s Diner (Morningstar), dated two days ago: *five Serbian Soups, five Space Beers, five Slivovitz Superior*. Indicates coordinated travel, shared staging, and recent presence in Morningstar. Also found: solvent oil and matches — planned arson.
PC searches exterior guards They are dead and lying motionless on the floor. Similar crude weapons, minimal personal items. Confirms layered security and kill-zone planning rather than improvisation.

Stage 7b — Ezrah Calls the Next Move

Trigger / Cue Immediate Reaction / What Happens Future Hook / Consequence
🎯 After the fight (HQ secured, Martin freed, evidence laid out) Ezrah is propped against the desk or wall, pale and shaking, but conscious if stabilized. She watches as you lay the findings out in a crude line: the Saw’s End chips, the Morningstar knife engraving, the Django’s Diner receipt, the solvent oil + matches… and finally the handwritten note pulled from the Hand’s jacket lining. Her eyes narrow when she reads it. “They didn’t just come here,” she says, voice thin with pain. “They came here with our address in their pocket.” A breath. “That means coordination. Someone knew exactly where to hit us — and when.” She looks up at you, jaw tight. “All roads point north. Morningstar. Atrana foothills.” Campaign pivot confirmed: The note proves insider-level targeting (the HQ was pre-identified). The other items prove Morningstar supply + staging. Ezrah gives the order: follow the trail to Morningstar → launches “Hunting an Unknown Hunter”.

6 | DM Notes

This scene is the true climax of the adventure. It shifts rapidly from debrief → betrayal → house-fight. Keep the pacing sharp and the focus on the PCs.

  • Stage 1 - Arrival and Threshold:
  • Keep this stage tight and fast — it’s an airlock, not a scene to linger in.
  • The only things that matter here are timing, presence of the Nameless Man, and Ezrah’s starting attitude.
  • Do not foreshadow the betrayal yet. Let Stage 2 breathe before the hammer falls.
  • Stage 2 - Debrief before the Storm:
  • This stage should feel safe but wrong.
  • Let the PCs talk, plan, and relax slightly.
  • Do not escalate yet — the contrast is the point.
  • The Nameless Man should feel like a person who already knows how this ends.
  • Stage 3 – The Betrayal:
  • This stage is intentionally unfair. It establishes stakes, not balance.
  • The Nameless Man is narratively doomed — mechanics exist only to shape *how* the room breaks, not *if*.
  • The emotional hit here fuels the rest of the scene.
  • Stage 4 – The Opaque Wall & Hostage Pressure:
  • Stage 4 is about compression: limited vision, rising threat, dwindling time.
  • Do not allow the safety wall to be “solved.” It exists to force lateral thinking.
  • The hostage threat is not a negotiation puzzle — it is pressure.
  • Ezrah is the only source of clarity here. Once she faints, the PCs are on their own.
  • Stage 5 - Basement Corridor & Split Pressure:
  • No enemies enter the basement.
  • No combat happens here unless the PCs create it.
  • This stage is about choice under pressure, not tactics.
  • Reward decisiveness; punish paralysis narratively, not mechanically.
  • Stage 6 — Backyard Junction & Final Assault
  • Purpose: The real fight — shaped by planning, not stats.
  • This is where weapons matter:The Hand: controlled pistol, command presence, Henchmen: crude firearms, close-range brutality, Exterior guards: delayed but dangerous reinforcements
  • Martin is a live lever: One bad roll can kill him
  • The yard offers three tactical truths: The plant = concealment, the shed = tools, not people, the curtain = risk, but access
  • Stage 7 - Aftermath & Evidence:
  • The Nameless Man’s death was planned
  • Ezrah was meant to die
  • The HQ address proves insider coordination
  • All physical clues converge on Morningstar

Overall: Scene 12 should feel tight, dangerous, and fast. The PCs should leave knowing this was never just a courier mission — it was the first step into a much larger conspiracy rooted in Morningstar and the Atrana Mountains.
