2 | Read-Aloud Description
You step out of the Office for Special Operations and into the twilight bustle of New Kourou’s Public Services Ring.
The smell of roasted Zelor Grain mixes with the musky scent of pack animals and the smell of damp earth from the road at your feet. To your right, a wooden sign hangs above a wooden gate, behind which you can see a makeshift stable and a living container.
- SECOND OR THIRD HAND – BUT THEY'LL RUN
The unmistakable snorting of Veyras emanates from within. To your left, the silhouette of the Courier Station rises above the street — tall iron pillars, wide cargo ramps, and the rows of lantern posts marking its entry lanes.
From the Food Market slope below, a familiar vendor voice cuts through the air:
“Tasty Tandora! Healthy Tandora! Smoothies one K!”
The first step toward Firetown lies somewhere among these choices — caravan, mount, or simple supplies before a long road.

6 | DM Notes
- Tone: Light, bustling, slightly pressured. This is a “choice hub” scene — not a challenge.
- Pacing: Let the world move. Use bells, horns, crowds, and market noise to keep momentum.
- No Resolutions Here:
- Caravan tickets and Travel logistics → Scene 3a
- Mount rental → Scene 3b
- Food Market interactions → new Scene 2c
- Use Character Personalities:
- Lexa pushes toward mounts; Rogan toward caravans. Roleplay flavor only.
- Time Pressure Reminder: PCs are on a 7-day mission timer. Missing the caravan can matter — but shouldn’t punish them harshly.
- World Texture: Vendor voices, animal noises, bells, and faint cold drafts bring New Kourou to life.

2 | Read-Aloud Description
You step back onto the OfSO footpath.
The settlement pulsates around you. Below, the noise of the New Kourou Food Market spills onto the street: shouts of prices pile up the slope toward the courier station to your left, where a bright orange convoy of the New Kourou Courier Service is just pulling away toward Morningstar.
Handbells ring out in short, sharp tones; shouts sound low and snorty as the drivers announce the departure times. The last car passes through the gate, leaving a brief silence—then the noise of the plaza returns.
A few meters to your right is a low stable yard with a faded sign: Mandalas Mounts – Veyras for Rent and Sale. From your vantage point, you can glimpse veyras stamping in their stalls, awaiting their renters or buyers.
The air smells of hay and roasted grain. Caravan bells, merchants' cries, and the shrill whistle of a riding instructor blend into a restless rhythm.
From here, Firetown is still a distant prospect — whether you reach it on Veyra or with a caravan is entirely up to you. But you should definitely dress warmly …

6 | DM Notes
- Purpose: Light roleplay and team decision scene; use to show contrast between Lexa’s and Rogan’s travel philosophies.
- Tone: Relaxed but time-pressured; background noise keeps pace alive.
- Money & Time: Restate caravan costs and the 7-day deadline pressure.
- Branching: Do not resolve clerk talk or mount prices here — that happens in scene 3a or 3b.
- Hook Delivery:
- Caravan = standard path → Scene 04 (New Kourou Courier Station)
- Mount = fast path → Scene 03 (Mandala's Mounts)
- Optional Rumor Reward: Any PC with Insight or Charisma ≥ 13 overhears mention of the “old man from Firetown.”
- Improvisation Tip: Treat every purchase or conversation as a potential trigger above; add small world details instead of rolling for everything.
