102 Pen and Paper Adventure | Beta Age | The Man Without A Name

SCENE 02 — TRAVEL PREPARATIONS

1 | Scene Overview

Atmosphere & Sensory Cues: Distant handbells and driver calls from the station · hoof-rattle of carts on basalt · the warm smell of beast-steam and wagon oil

2 | Read-Aloud Description

You step back onto the OfSO footpath.

The settlement pulsates around you. Below, the noise of the New Kourou Food Market spills onto the street: shouts of prices pile up the slope toward the courier station to your left, where a bright orange convoy of the New Kourou Courier Service is just pulling away toward Morningstar.

Handbells ring out in short, sharp tones; shouts sound low and snorty as the drivers announce the departure times. The last car passes through the gate, leaving a brief silence—then the noise of the plaza returns.

A few meters to your right is a low stable yard with a faded sign: Mandalas Mounts – Veyras for Rent and Sale. From your vantage point, you can glimpse veyras stamping in their stalls, awaiting their renters or buyers.

The air smells of hay and roasted grain. Caravan bells, merchants' cries, and the shrill whistle of a riding instructor blend into a restless rhythm.

From here, Firetown is still a distant prospect — whether you reach it on Veyra or with a caravan is entirely up to you. But you should definitely dress warmly …

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud or Narrative Insert
When PCs discuss travel options A caravan horn sounds nearby. A clerk’s voice echoes through a loudspeaker: “Next departure to Firetown — boarding at platform“
When players linger to buy supplies A voice cuts through the twilight from the direction of the Food Market — loud, rhythmic, and clearly intended to pull customers in. “Tasty Tandora! Healthy Tandora! Last batch before mist rolls in!

6 | DM Notes

  • Purpose: Light roleplay and team decision scene; use to show contrast between Lexa’s and Rogan’s travel philosophies.
  • Tone: Relaxed but time-pressured; background noise keeps pace alive.
  • Money & Time: Restate caravan costs and the 7-day deadline pressure.
  • Branching: Do not resolve clerk talk or mount prices here — that happens in scene 3a or 3b.
  • Hook Delivery:
  • Optional Rumor Reward: Any PC with Insight or Charisma ≥ 13 overhears mention of the “old man from Firetown.”
  • Improvisation Tip: Treat every purchase or conversation as a potential trigger above; add small world details instead of rolling for everything.
