THE KETTLER TWINS

Race and Faction

Background

The Kettler Twins — Elias and Ruben Kettler — were born during the long transit aboard the Last Frontier and raised in the ship’s lower agricultural decks. From an early age, they learned to live between systems: official and unofficial, planned and improvised.

After the crash-landing on VOI 700 D, the twins established themselves as traveling fur traders during the Beta Age. Working as independent road sellers for Hale & Hook, they collected processed pelts and finished fur garments from the company’s Morningstar depot and carried the tagged stock from settlement to settlement. Their regular markets included the River Dock Market in Hope and the New Kourou Food Market.

They were never loud men, nor particularly social, but they were reliable. They paid on time, did not ask unnecessary questions, and delivered what they promised. Over time, their presence became a familiar constant along the Trade Route — two men, one carriage, the same routines repeated with obsessive precision.

Their personalities diverged outwardly but remained tightly bound beneath the surface. Elias spoke of balance, fate, and signs. Ruben dismissed such things entirely. Yet they never traveled apart, never negotiated separately, and never allowed outsiders to insert themselves between them.

Roles by Ages

Beta Age

  • Road Sellers for Hale & Hook: Collected tagged stock from the company’s Morningstar depot and carried it from settlement to settlement throughout the Free State.
  • Route Regulars: Known figures along the Trade Route, especially in Hope, where they routinely rented bunks, drank at local pubs, and played games of Twenty One.
  • Quiet Opportunists: Took advantage of gaps in oversight, shortages, and timing — without ever drawing formal attention.

Gamma Age

  • Outlaws (Rumored): After the founding of the Federal Confederation and the introduction of Communardism, private trade was nationalized and animal hunting prohibited. The Kettler Twins disappeared from official registries soon after. Persistent rumors claim they continued operating beyond reservation borders. Internally, the Federal Sheriff lists them as “suspected trading partners of the Jane Mendoza Gang”. No public warrants exist. Their status remains officially unknown.

Personality

Shared Traits:

  • Obsessive routines
  • Deep mutual loyalty
  • Aversion to unpredictability
  • Never sit with their backs to a door
  • Share a blanket when cold — and argue about who folded it last

Elias Kettler — “The Spiritual One”:

  • Believes their mother became an angel after death
  • Interprets coincidences as signs
  • Calm, reflective, softly spoken
  • Often finishes Ruben’s sentences — but redirects their meaning

Ruben Kettler — “The Pessimist”:

  • Believes death ends everything
  • Mocks superstition and hope
  • Cynical, sharp-eyed, calculating
  • Finishes Elias’s sentences — usually by undercutting them

When drinking, they always order different drinks, then swap halfway through.

Physical Attributes

Elias Kettler:

  • Height: 1.78 m
  • Weight: 96 kg
  • Appearance: Soft-spoken demeanor, heavy-lidded eyes, short dark hair streaked with grey. Wears a thin fur coat suitable for humid climates, a simple cord necklace, and occasionally a small animal skull worn as a personal talisman.

Ruben Kettler:

  • Height: 1.80 m
  • Weight: 101 kg
  • Appearance: Tighter posture, sharper gaze, same facial structure as Elias but harder lines. A square wooden replacement fills one of his upper incisors, and a puckered scar marks the base of his missing index finger. Wears a thin fur vest over utilitarian clothing with reinforced leather straps.

Shared Details:

  • Identical beanies made from iridescent Veyra fur
  • Weathered hands, permanently stained from work
  • Move with practiced coordination

Equipment and Methods

Trading Equipment:

  • Scales, knives, sealing tools
  • Fermentation salts and resins
  • Ledger books with coded shorthand

Signature Carriage:

  • A reinforced, enclosed trade carriage drawn by a single Hoo
  • Marked on both flanks with painted signage “KETTLER PELTS”
  • Rear fermentation barrel used for curing pelts
  • Fold-out canopy and side table allowing the carriage to function as a market stand

Hidden Methods (DM Knowledge):

  • The twins share a spoken safe word: “cold salt”. Spoken casually, always by Elias. Usually embedded in talk (e.g. “These won’t keep without cold salt.”). Signals that a person present must be eliminated
  • Each carries a resin-reinforced needle concealed in their clothing
  • When deployed, the needle is used suddenly and silently
  • Bodies are disposed of inside the fermentation barrel, disguised among pelts
  • They only act when no witnesses are present
  • Targets are killed away from public spaces, often after shared drinks or games

Motivations and Goals

  • Maintain independence at all costs
  • Control their trade routes and contacts
  • Avoid attention from centralized authority
  • Ensure that threats never grow into problems

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Use the Kettler Twins as:

  • Ambiguous Allies: Helpful, informative, and cooperative — until crossed
  • Quiet Threats: Danger that emerges only after trust is established
  • Long-Term Antagonists: Survivors who adapt across Ages without ever becoming obvious villains
  • Moral Mirrors: Men who are not evil, but have decided what they are willing to do to endure
