RALAR BAY
- Type: Geothermal Coastal Zone
- Location: Eastern border of the Ralar Region, connected to the Dark Sea Region on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D
Overview
Ralar Bay is a rare geothermal coastal zone located along the eastern edge of the Ralar Region, where the volcanic activity of Ralar Volcano influences the surrounding section of the otherwise frozen Dark Sea. Unlike the majority of the Dark Sea, which is buried under thick ice sheets, the waters of Ralar Bay remain partially ice-free due to the persistent geothermal heat from the volcano.
This microclimate has created a unique ecosystem, rich in extremophile organisms, where life clings to warmth and darkness. Though the region remains largely unexplored due to the extreme environment and difficult access, its biological and geological features make it one of the most scientifically intriguing sites on VOI 700 D.
Local Climatic Conditions, Geography and Landscape
The climate of Ralar Bay is shaped by the thermal energy of the nearby volcano. While the general Dark Sea temperatures range between -40°C and -70°C, the immediate shoreline of Ralar Bay experiences significantly warmer conditions.
Microclimate: Ralar Bay and Shore (Geothermal Coastal Zone)
- Temperatures range from 0°C to -10°C
- Volcanic activity creates tidepools, hot springs, sulfur vents, and steam jets
- Ice-free waters support extremophile marine life
- Volcanic shifts frequently reshape the shoreline
General Dark Sea Conditions (Unexplored Interior)
- Ice sheets several to hundreds of meters thick
- Temperatures between -40°C and -70°C
- Drifting icebergs and pressure ridges conceal abyssal trenches
- Depth of the ocean is unknown — some theories suggest subglacial plains, others propose deep oceanic rifts
Local Flora
The Ralar Bay supports several species of extremophilic plant-like organisms:
- Lava Mosses – Thrive on hot, mineral-rich rocks near geothermal vents
- Crust Lichens – Resilient extremophiles capable of growing directly on cooled lava flows
- Bioluminescent Algae – Found in thermally active tidepools, illuminating the coastal shallows
These lifeforms recover quickly after volcanic eruptions, forming a resilient cycle of destruction and regeneration.
Local Fauna
Exohuman knowledge about the fauna of Ralar Bay is limited. Exploration occurred only during a few targeted Beta Age expeditions organized by the Free State of Settlers and during the initial construction phase of Firetown and associated resource scouting efforts. Plans for a comprehensive underwater survey were ultimately abandoned due to the outbreak of the Great War and the post-war restrictions enforced by the Peace Treaty. As a result, all data concerning the underwater world of Ralar Bay is based solely on accidental sightings and fragmentary sensor data.
Fish
- Crimson Deepfish – A blind, slow-moving species that uses vibration and chemical cues to navigate near hydrothermal vents.
- Glowfin Ray – Flat, cartilaginous predator known for its bioluminescent fin tips, believed to hunt in complete darkness.
- Rilzak – Shape-shifting ambush-predator, capable of altering the pigment of its skin to seamlessly blend into its surroundings.
Aquatic Insects
- Scalding Skimmer Larvae – Insect larvae that cling to mineral outcrops in geothermal pools; develop rapidly before emerging as short-lived adult forms.
Aquatic Invertebrates
- Darun – Highly intelligent, octopus-like cephalopod. Unlike most deep-sea creatures, the Darun has developed an advanced problem-solving ability, camouflage adaptation, and tool usage.
- Tubeworm Colonies – Clustered around sulfur vents, absorbing nutrients from chemical plumes.
- Deep Mussels – Filter feeders anchored to volcanic rock, tolerant of extreme heat.
- Lava Crabs – Armored invertebrates that dwell in steam fissures, adapted to rapid temperature changes.
- Nuzar – Bioluminescent filter feeder that thrives in the nutrient-rich geothermal shallows of the Ralar Bay.
- Taval – Hard-shelled crustacean-like species native to the warm volcanic shallows and underwater geothermal caves of the Ralar Bay.
Marine Microfauna
- Thermophilic Microbes – Bacteria and archaea that form the foundation of the bay's food chain, often living directly in boiling pools or near lava channels.
Surrounding Fauna
- Kajanga – Amphibian-fish hybrid, blind yet possessing large, functionless eyes. Known for its role in Native myths.
- Nathar – Semi-aquatic mammal highly adapted to both land and sea, using its muscular limbs and webbed feet to traverse the rocky shores, ice caverns, and geothermal pools that characterize its habitat. ===== Local Population and Settlement History ===== ==== Native Presence ==== The Native Tribes regard Ralar Bay as a place of taboo and power. Few tribes venture close, and none are known to have settled permanently. Some oral traditions describe the bay as the “Breath of the Deep,” believed to be a mouth of the planet itself. ==== Exohuman Exploration ==== No permanent Exohuman settlement exists in Ralar Bay due to its hazardous geography. During the Beta Age, isolated reconnaissance missions attempted to measure geothermal fluxes along the coast, but full exploration was suspended after the enactment of the Peace Treaty. ===== Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters ===== Ralar Bay offers Dungeon Masters a setting for deep-sea mystery, hostile survival, and forbidden knowledge. Its geothermal landscapes and extremophile life make it ideal for science fiction-style exploration or spiritual encounters steeped in tribal mythology. * Use environmental hazards such as steam bursts, collapsing ice ridges, and unstable lava flows for dynamic terrain challenges * Introduce lost research probes, relics of failed expeditions, or tribal artifacts said to have “survived the Deep” * Consider rumors of ancient technologies buried beneath the bay or mythic creatures dwelling in the underwater trenches ==== Adventure Hooks – Beta Age: ==== * Heat Signature – A geothermal drone goes missing while mapping lava vents. A recovery team sent to retrieve it encounters something unexpected beneath the waves. ==== Adventure Hooks – Gamma Age: ==== * Forbidden Waters** – An outlaw ship uses a geothermal tidepool as a smuggling drop zone. Players tasked with intercepting it discover a hidden cavern system filled with living bioluminescent structures — and signs of something much older.
