SCALDING SKIMMER

Overview

The Scalding Skimmer is a two-stage insect species found near the geothermal pools of Ralar Bay in the Dark Sea Region and the Region Ralar on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Known primarily through its larval form, which thrives in mineral-rich boiling pools, the adult skimmer emerges for a brief airborne lifespan during geothermal stability periods.

The species is essential to the vent ecosystem, providing nutrition to fish and crustaceans in larval form, and serving as rare pollinators for thermophilic mosses during their fleeting adult phase.

Physique and Appearance

  • Larval Size: 3–6 cm in length | Adult Size: 5–7 cm wingspan
  • Weight: <10 grams
  • Larval Body Shape: Segmented, pale yellow with chitinous armor
  • Adult Body Shape: Dragonfly-like with translucent wings and orange-veined patterns

Special Features:

  • Larvae cling to mineral outcrops in pools up to 95°C
  • Adults have heat-resistant wings and poor vision, relying on magnetic field detection for navigation
  • Larvae produce a bubbling secretion that shields them from direct heat exposure

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 11 (larvae), 13 (adult)
  • Hit Points (HP): 2 (larvae), 6 (adult)
  • Speed: 20 ft. (crawling/larvae), 60 ft. flying (adult)

Attacks

  • None (larvae); Adults can distract enemies with light shimmer (DC 11 Wisdom save or disadvantage on next perception check)

Special Abilities

  • Boil Shield (Larvae): Reduces fire damage by 1 when in geothermal environments
  • Flash Glide (Adult): Advantage on Dexterity saving throws to escape grapples or nets

Behavior

  • Diet: Thermophilic microbes (larvae), flower nectar and mineral vapors (adult)
  • Social Structure: Swarms of hundreds, synchronized emergence patterns
  • Activity Pattern: Larvae active during geothermal stability; adults active only 1–2 days post-metamorphosis

Survival Strategies:

  • Larvae retreat into porous rock layers during surges
  • Adults avoid predators by moving erratically and reflecting heat shimmer

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Reproductive Traits:

  • Egg Laying: Females deposit eggs on heated rock surfaces near geothermal pools
  • Hatching Time: 3–5 days

Lifespan and Growth:

  • Larval Stage: 2–3 weeks
  • Adult Stage: 1–2 days (winged adults die shortly after mating)

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Scalding Skimmers can offer rich environmental storytelling or quest materials for biologists.

  • Alchemy Source: Their heat-resistant wings and bubbling secretion are valuable ingredients for potions and temperature-resistant gear
  • Ecological Indicator: Sudden swarms of adults may indicate a brief geothermal calm — or foreshadow a vent burst
