LAVA CRABS

Overview

Lava Crabs are armored extremophile invertebrates native to the geothermal zones of Ralar Bay on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Perfectly adapted to survive intense heat, pressure changes, and volatile terrain, they live in steam fissures and along the edges of lava flows.

They play a vital ecological role by recycling organic material and providing sustenance for predators like the Glowfin Ray. Their jagged shells and aggressive defense behavior make them both resilient and dangerous when provoked. For the Native Tribes, their steam clouds are sometimes described as “the breath of the mountain.”

Physique and Appearance

  • Size: Up to 60 cm across shell width
  • Weight: 8–10 kg
  • Exoskeleton: Layered volcanic-carbon shell reinforced with jagged obsidian shards, giving them a shard-like silhouette
  • Joints: Glowing red, functioning as natural steam valves that puff rhythmically when the crab moves
  • Limbs: Six sturdy legs with gripping claws, plus two sharp front pincers
  • Coloration: Dark gray to black

Special Features:

  • Able to survive in temperatures exceeding 100°C
  • Emits rhythmic bursts of steam from joints, creating clouds that obscure predators
  • Shell plating often displays hexagonal fissures, resembling volcanic honeycomb
  • Uses chemosensory antennae to detect nutrients in volcanic runoff

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 16 (reinforced exoskeleton)
  • Hit Points (HP): 30
  • Speed: 20 ft. (land), 30 ft. (climbing), 10 ft. (swimming)

Attacks

  • Claw Pinch: +5 to hit, 1d8+2 bludgeoning damage
  • Steam Burst (Recharge 5–6): All creatures in a 10 ft. radius must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be blinded until the end of their next turn

Special Abilities

  • Molten Skin: Resistant to fire damage
  • Volcanic Grip: Advantage on climbing checks on volcanic or rocky surfaces
  • Colony Fog: When multiple Lava Crabs emit steam bursts together, they can create dense fog banks that obscure entire fissure fields

Behavior

  • Diet: Scavenger; feeds on decaying organic matter and extremophile algae
  • Social Structure: Semi-solitary, but loose colonies form around stable vents
  • Activity Pattern: Most active during lava surges and post-eruption phases

Survival Strategies:

  • Retreats into steam fissures to avoid predators
  • Emits steam clouds to confuse attackers or mask scent from heat-trackers
  • Colonies use synchronized bursts to cloak themselves in geothermal fog

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Reproductive Traits:

  • Mating Season: Linked to geothermal cycles
  • Egg Laying: Females deposit clusters of heat-resistant eggs near stable fissures
  • Incubation Time: 12–15 days, dependent on vent activity

Lifespan and Growth:

  • Total Lifespan: 12–15 years
  • Juvenile Phase: Young crabs molt rapidly in the first year, reaching full size by year three
