NEW KOUROU COURIER SERVICE CARTS
Overview
The carts of the New Kourou Courier Service (NKCS) were the first purpose-built freight vehicles of the Exohumans on VOI 700 D, setting the mechanical standard later refined by the Gamma Age Federal Courier Service. Two distinct models were produced in the NKCS workshop:
- Type 1 – Habitual Belt Model: A simpler, open-bench cart built for the mild, perpetual-twilight climate of the Asari Region.
- Type 2 – Dark Side Model: A fully enclosed, heated cart commissioned by the Firetown Courier Service for the frigid Trade Route corridor between Firetown (in the icy Ralar Region) and New Kourou.
Both types shared the core frame, dimensions, and load capacity that would later be adopted wholesale by the Federal Confederation.
Construction and Design
- Dimensions: 4 m (L) × 2 m (W) × 2.5 m (H) for every NKCS cart.
- Structure: Lightweight alloys and composites salvaged from the Last Frontier, insulated against heat and cold — even though Type 1 rarely needed it.
- Wheels: Spiked-tread wheels for traction on mud, ice, or shifting sand across both Twilight plains and Dark Side glaciers.
Features
Driver’s Area
- Type 1: A simple wooden bench with a wind-shielding visor; no heating or enclosed cabin.
- Type 2: Enclosed, insulated cabin with a bio-ethanol heated seat for sub-zero Ralar nights, plus a sealed windshield and wipers.
Goods Carts
- Capacity: Up to 3 000 kg in both models.
- Insulation: Full thermal lining (critical for Type 2; redundant but included in Type 1).
- Lighting: See Lighting and Navigation (applies only to Type 2).
Passenger Carts
- Capacity: Ten passengers seated along the walls.
- Heating: Bio-heaters (Type 2 only). Type 1 relied on heavy blankets.
Supply Compartments
- Standard lockers for food, water, medical kits, and Hoo fodder on both cart types.
Lighting and Navigation in Driver’s Area and Passenger Carts (Type 2 only)
- Twin near-range headlamps plus a retractable far-beam search-light, all powered by a dedicated Quantum Fusion Battery canister salvaged from the Last Frontier.
- Navigation relied on a magnetic compass.
- Gamma-Age Retrofit (post-2631): Following nationalisation, most Type 2 carts were upgraded by the Federal Lumi Manufactory with low-draw bioluminescent lantern modules that use cultured Luminofera dualis — eliminating the need for scarce Quantum Fusion cells.
Draft Animals: Hoos
Every cart, regardless of type, was pulled by a pair of sturdy Hoos, outfitted with weatherproof blankets for Ralar runs and lighter tack for Asari deliveries.
Security Measures
- Emergency Firework Display: One signal mortar beneath the driver’s seat, colour-coded for NKCS convoys (purple-white burst).
- Cargo Locks: Mechanically coded padlocks on all rear doors.
- Whistle: Every driver carried a carved wooden whistle to alert other carts in the convoy.
Look and Feel
The NKCS carts carried the raw, improvised character of early settlement engineering. Built in makeshift workshops from salvaged alloys and timber supports, they looked less like uniform vehicles and more like survival contraptions pulled into shape by necessity.
Type 1 (Habitual Belt Model): These open-bench carts resembled rugged farm wagons adapted for twilight plains. Their exposed benches, timber frames, and patchy metal plating gave them a rustic, half-finished quality. Drivers often added personal touches such as painted symbols, leather coverings, or cloth canopies to shield against rain.
Type 2 (Dark Side Model): With its enclosed cabin and reinforced hull, the Dark Side cart gave the impression of a rolling iron chest. Heavy plating, sealed windows, and faintly glowing headlamps gave it a more formidable silhouette on the frozen Ralar roads. Still, seams and rivets showed clearly, betraying its improvised Beta Age craftsmanship.
Atmosphere: Riding in a NKCS cart was a rugged, noisy, and often uncomfortable experience. The wooden wheels and metal fittings rattled constantly, while the creaks of timber and the snorts of the Hoos pulling ahead echoed through the dark. Passengers in Type 1 shivered under blankets in open air, while those in Type 2 sat in dim, cramped interiors lit by weak lamps or, later, glowing Luminofera dualis. Despite the hardships, the sight of a convoy of glowing carts crossing the twilight plains or icy trade routes became a defining image of the Free State’s determination to survive and connect its scattered settlements.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
- Bench-Seat Peril (Type 1): Exposed drivers in Twilight rainstorms or during sand squalls provide tense survival challenges.
- Ice-Road Convoy (Type 2): Guard a heated NKCS cart across Ralar ice fields, fending off wildlife or bandit ambushes.
- Cargo Switcheroo: Smugglers may exploit identical cart dimensions to swap crates between NKCS and Firetown Courier Service manifests.
