FIRETOWN COURIER STATION

Overview

The Firetown Courier Station was the headquarters and primary logistics hub of the Firetown Courier Service, handling all caravans on the frontier routes of the Dark Side. As the terminus of the supply network, it received goods, passengers, and mail from New Kourou and dispatched local ore, provisions, and personnel back along the same line.

Unlike the brighter stations of the Asari Region, Firetown’s hub was engineered for perpetual darkness and freezing cold. Thick volcanic stone and geothermal heat vents kept its interiors habitable, making it a fortress of survival at the very edge of the Free State.

Following the formation of the Federal Confederation in 2632, the station was nationalized under the Federal Allotment Agency and rebranded the Federal Courier Service Station of Firetown.

Architectural Significance

The Firetown Courier Station is built as a fully enclosed frontier structure, assembled from stacked cargo containers, rough timber framing, and salvaged spaceship hull panels reclaimed from the Last Frontier.

  • Construction Material: Formed by dented container sides and patched hull plating, bolted together and reinforced with wooden beams; seams are sealed with tar, cloth, and welded scrap.
  • Floors: 2 (no basement)
  • Roof & Roofline: Retractable Short-Wave Antenna (for the Exohuman Shortwave Radio Network on the roof); Neon Sign (“Firetown Courier Station“) on the facade.
  • Geothermal Feed Vents: Rear steel vents channel heat and water from the Geothermal Power Plant
  • Air Vents / Heat Recovery Ventilator: The building's air exchange was managed by a centralized, mechanical ventilation system with a central intake on the exterior of the building.
  • Power Supply: Quantum Fusion Battery
  • Design Purpose: Improvised construction for a quick, pragmatic connection to the trade route.

Building Structure

Ground Floor – Arrival & Postal Hall

  • Delivery Bay: Arched stone doors for wagons; cargo conveyed to sorting tables
  • Postal Office: Heated counter where settlers submitted letters and parcels; racks for sorted mail; strongbox for valuables; hatch to drone bay
  • Passenger Waiting Area: Heavy benches and geothermal-heated troughs; dim lanterns for light, basic information consoles and a public notice board. Often noisy and crowded during trade convoy departures
  • Public Restrooms: Two gender-neutral stalls with AuroraSan System fixtures
  • External Hoos Stable: Enclosed corral with heated flooring for Hoos
  • Arrival & Departure Yard: Covered stone forecourt for unloading and loading wagons
    1. Unloading Bays: Porters inventoried ore and supplies, logged into manifests
    2. Loading Lanes: Wagons queued, tagged, and loaded for outbound routes
    3. Passenger Platform: Raised deck with step-stool ramp for boarding; adjacent canteen stall served hot broth and tea

Second Floor – Administration & Offices

  • Station Manager’s Office: Stone desk, route maps, Desktop Shortwave Transceiver
  • Clerks’ Offices (2): Manifests, fee terminals, reservation ledgers
  • Meeting Room: Briefing hall for Firetown Courier staff and Trooper liaisons
  • Staff Restrooms: Two gender-neutral stalls with AuroraSan fixtures

Postal Services

Run by the Firetown Courier Service:

  • Letter Dispatch: Fiber-paper letters dispatched with caravan runs; ~2 days to New Kourou.
  • Parcel Post: Packages and crates stored in heated vaults, tagged for next departure.
  • Courier Drones: Short-range dispatches (≤ 2 kg) to nearby mines, outposts, or geothermal facilities (≤ 15 km radius).
  • Public Notice Board: Mounted in the waiting hall. Personal postings were free; commercial postings cost 1 K.

Look and Feel

Harsh work lamps glare off dented container walls and patched hull plating, their light broken by cables, brackets, and frost-rimed steel beams. Cold air leaks in through loading doors and ventilation seams, while heat ducts hiss and rattle, pushing uneven warmth through the structure like breath through cracked lungs. Every step carries the metallic echo of boots on steel grating and snow-matted planks.

Hoos stamp and snort in their heated corrals, steam billowing from their nostrils as handlers tug at worn tethers and adjust insulating blankets. Porters haul copper crates and cargo pallets across the yard, metal scraping against metal. Inside the waiting hall, the smell is a mix of damp fabric, torches, boiled broth, and overheated wiring — a place defined by movement, labor, and fatigue.

Settlers crowd the postal counter in heavy coats, fingers stiff and reddened as they slide letters and parcels across scarred steel surfaces. The public notice board is a chaotic patchwork of curling paper and stamped tags: missing workers, unpaid debts, last-chance job offers, warnings about unsafe routes. Near the benches, exhausted travelers cradle chipped metal mugs of bitter tea, eyes hollow from long nights, bad luck, and too many delays.

Overhead, a Combat Drone sweeps the hall in slow, methodical arcs, their red glow reflecting off steel walls and frost-streaked windows. Courier drones whine softly as they cycle through diagnostics near the loading bays. The station never truly rests — it hums, clanks, steams, and waits — a fragile lifeline at the edge of the Trade Route, where every departure might be the last and every arrival is quietly counted as a small victory.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Firetown Courier Station provides a dark, high-stakes backdrop:

  • The Silver Crate — The Guarding Bot sounds a klaxon: a silver-lined crate bound for the Federal Copper Plant is flagged as suspicious. Its manifest still reads “medical supplies,” but the driver swears it rattles like ore chunks. As the Station Manager hesitates, the shortwave console crackles: “SECURITY BREACH — BOMB DETECTED.” A thunderous explosion rocks the foyer. PCs must uncover who planted the device — smugglers, saboteurs, or worse.
