MISTFALL REST CEMETERY

Overview

On 1 November 2626, the nascent Morningstar community consecrated Mistfall Rest Cemetery, choosing a mist-washed glade 500 m beyond the town’s makeshift wall. By mid-2627, the 800 m² grounds – ringed by living logs of native hardwood — received their first interment, symbolizing the settlement’s transition from frontier camp to enduring township.

In addition to individual graves, the cemetery also features a central memorial stone dedicated to the passengers of the Last Frontier who perished during the crash landing on VOI 700 D — many of whom were never recovered or formally buried.

With a total of 63 graves (23 Volunteer Army of Man soldiers and 40 civilians) through its operation, Mistfall Rest served Morningstar’s 3 000 residents until 8 April 2631, when Peace Treaty edicts ended terrestrial burials. Thereafter the plots fell silent, the mist and undergrowth reclaiming headstones and markers.

Cultural and Strategic Importance

  • First Sacred Ground: Marked Morningstar’s break from shipboard internment, anchoring ExoHumans to mountain soil.
  • Wartime Beacon: Soldier graves from 2629–30 fostered communal solidarity amid Frontier conflict.
  • Peace Treaty Flashpoint: Its remote location became off-limits under treaty mobility controls, turning the site into an icon for trailing Individualists.

Look and Feel

Beta Age (2626–2631)

A thin veil of mist hugs the glade’s low stone wall, dotted with simple carved markers of native basalt. Narrow wood-plank walkways wind between neat rows of sapling plantings, their new leaves whispering in the warm mountain breeze. The scent of damp earth and fresh-cut hardwood mingles with faint incense tokens left by mourners. In the distance, the creak of a Hoo-drawn bier cart and the soft scrape of shovel on soil are the only sounds beneath the half-light. Visitors pause at a small log pavilion — Mistfall Alcove — where settlers share final words under a sky perpetually brushed in twilight hues.

Gamma Age (post-2631)

Overgrown vines and moss cloak toppled markers; saplings thrive where footsteps once trod. The wood planks rot and vanish, leaving only hummocks of leaf litter. Drips from evergreen canopies patter on mossy tombstones, now half-buried in tangled undergrowth. Occasional shafts of pale light pierce the foliage, illuminating lichen-scarred epitaphs.

History / Legacy

  • Construction: Two Manual Labor Bots felled and milled logs; local stone quarried for headstones.
  • Memorial Erection: The monument was raised in late 2626 using locally quarried stone, marking the first collective act of remembrance for the Last Frontier’s dead after planetary settlement began.
  • Closure: Peace Treaty clause on site-based burials (April 2631) led to official abandonment; access thereafter prohibited.
  • Reclamation: Without caretakers, the mist-forest regenerated swiftly; by 2635 only broken slabs and fallen posts hint at past reverence.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Beta Age Hook

  • “Mist and Memory”: During the height of the Great War, a beloved settler was slain when the Alliance of Native Tribes raided Morningstar. As elite Guarding Trooper operatives, the PCs are ordered to escort the mourning family — and the coffin — along the mist-cloaked logging trails to Mistfall Rest Cemetery before the next downpour washes away the path. Along the way, they must fend off prowling mountain predators stirred by the conflict and repel a band of hostile Orlanda warriors who see the funeral procession as trespassers on sacred ground.

Gamma Age Hook

  • “Forbidden Will”: When a respected ex-soldier’s widow dies, her final will demands burial beside her husband in the long-closed Mistfall Rest Cemetery. Desperate, her children secretly commission the PCs to break into the Funeral Home, steal her coffin, and smuggle it out under cover of night.
