LASER CANONS

Overview and Game Mechanics

  • Laser Canon
  • Type: Defensive (stationary, military-grade)
  • Damage: 3d12 energy (area effect)
  • Range: Normal 1 km, Maximum 1.5 km
  • Rate of Fire: One shot per second
  • Properties: Powered by a Quantum Fusion Battery (QFB), requiring a Quantum Fusion Recalibration Station (QFRS) for recharging. Features automated targeting with manual override available.
  • Cost (Beta Age): Not officially for sale (only available for Guarding Troopers)
  • Cost (Gamma Age): Not available no more.
  • Weight: Stationary
  • Availability: Destroyed post-Great War; forbidden under Peace Treaty.

Operational Modes

Automated Operation:

  • Laser Cannons were fully integrated into the GAIA system, allowing for autonomous threat detection and engagement.
  • Reduced human involvement but made adaptability difficult in case of AI malfunctions.

Manual Operation:

  • Gunner's Cabin: Provided a secure environment for human operators in emergency override mode.
  • Switching Mechanism: Required an Intelligence Check (DC 12) to override GAIA and switch to manual targeting.

Historical Background

Development and Deployment

Laser Cannons were developed in 2338 by a private defense company for the Last Frontier Project. Originally designed to protect the starship from interstellar threats (e.g., debris, potential hostiles), these powerful energy weapons were repurposed after the crash landing on VOI 700 D to serve as defensive emplacements for human settlements. Each settlement, New Kourou, Firetown, Hope, and Morningstar, was equipped with 10 cannons, strategically positioned to fortify settlement perimeters and defend against potential threats.

Role in the Great War

During the Great War,became the backbone of ExoHuman defenses. They provided long-range suppression and counter-offensives against the Alliance of Native Tribes.

  • Strategic Effectiveness: Their superior range and high-energy beams made them ideal for repelling large-scale offensives. They were effective at stopping Native warriors before they reached settlement walls.
  • QFB Dependency & Sabotage: Laser Cannons were powered by Quantum Fusion Batteries (QFBs), which were recharged via Quantum Fusion Recalibration Stations (QFRS). The Anti-War Movement's sabotage of QFB charging infrastructure in 2631 cut off the cannons' energy supply, rendering them inoperative in the final stages of the war.
  • The Fall of ExoHuman Defenses: With QFB charging facilities offline, the cannons could no longer sustain continuous fire. Their failure accelerated the collapse of the Volunteer Army of Man (VAM), ultimately leading to ExoHuman surrender.

Post-War Fate

As part of the Peace Treaty of 2631, all remaining Laser Cannons were dismantled and destroyed by the Alliance of Native Tribes to prevent future military resurgence.

  • Weapon Restrictions: ExoHumans were forbidden from building or reactivating laser-based weaponry.
  • Any attempt to restore a Laser Cannon in the Gamma Age is considered an act of war by the Federal Confederation.
  • Rumored Survivors: Some individualists and Outlaw factions believe that buried cannon components still exist in Firetown’s underground ruins. Radical Individualists seek to restore at least one cannon, though no functional units have been confirmed.

Technical Background and Weapon Construction

Key Components

  • Laser Source: Utilized solid-state laser technology with glass-fiber optics for maximum energy output.
  • Power Supply: Quantum Fusion Battery (QFB), recharged at Quantum Fusion Recalibration Stations (QFRS).
  • Energy Redistribution Nodes (ERNs): Converted solar, wind, and geothermal energy into QFB-compatible formats.
  • Cooling System: Active fan-based cooling to prevent overheating during sustained operations.
  • Targeting Systems: Computer vision, radar, and infrared sensors for real-time tracking.

Control Systems

  • GAIA-Integration: Fully automated by GAIA, allowing for autonomous threat detection and engagement.
  • Manual Override: A switch enabled manual operation in emergencies, with a protected gunner's cabin for human operators.

Rotatable Platform and Mobility

  • Mounted on a 360-degree rotatable base with electric motors for precise aiming.
  • Swivel arms allowed adjustments for elevation and rapid response to battlefield threats.

The Role of Quantum Fusion Batteries (QFBs)

Laser Cannons were entirely dependent on QFBs for operation. These high-powered weapons drew massive energy loads and required frequent recharging.

Charging Infrastructure (Sabotaged in 2631)

  • Quantum Fusion Recalibration Stations (QFRS): Restored QFB efficiency and prevented energy degradation. Maintained consistent energy output for heavy military applications.
  • Energy Redistribution Nodes (ERNs): Converted solar, wind, and geothermal power into QFB-compatible formats. Allowed cross-settlement energy transfer, reducing reliance on singular power stations.

Sabotage & Its Effects

  • The Anti-War Movement’s attack on QFB charging stations (March 31, 2631) disabled ExoHuman laser weapons, shields, and defensive turrets.
  • Without functioning QFRS facilities, the remaining Laser Cannons ran out of power, dooming the Volunteer Army of Man (VAM).
  • Outlaw factions and individualists are rumored to be restoring QFB charging infrastructure in secret locations.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

1. Beta Age: Incorporating Laser Cannons in the Great War

  • Defensive Scenarios: Design missions where players must defend settlements, coordinating with automated Laser Cannons while addressing malfunctions or power shortages.
  • Energy Crisis: Introduce a high-stakes mission where players must restore QFB power stations before the cannons fai
  • Sabotage Missions: Players could be tasked with disabling enemy cannons, either in favor of the Anti-War Movement or for ExoHuman survival.

2. Gamma Age: Post-War Exploration

  • Remnants of Technology: Players unearth abandoned Laser Cannon components, leading to moral dilemmas over reactivation
  • Conflict Over Forbidden Tech: Outlaw factions attempt to reactivate Laser Cannons, forcing players to decide between upholding the Peace Treaty or aiding a rebellion.
