KAURUM
Overview
The Kaurum is a massive, dome-shaped scavenger native to the Dark Sea Region on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Unlike crab-like arthropods, the Kaurum has evolved into a form resembling a living outcrop of volcanic rock. It plays a crucial role in the ecosystem by consuming detritus, decaying organic matter, and the remains of fallen creatures.
Slow and immovable, the Kaurum can withstand extreme pressure, geothermal heat, and abyssal cold, making it one of the most resilient creatures on VOI 700 D. Some individuals live for centuries, and the Native Tribes tell stories of ancient Kaurum known as “The Stones That Remember,” guardians of the deep who have seen generations of change.
Physique and Appearance
- Size: 2–3 meters in diameter
- Weight: 600–900 kg
- Body Shape: Dome-shaped, low-profile body resembling fused tectonic plates
- Exoskeleton: Layered chitin and mineral plating with jagged ridges; fissures glow with faint blue bioluminescent “fault lines”
- Limbs: Short, sturdy support limbs underneath the dome for slow crawling; one massive forward clamp-arm evolved for crushing bone and armor
- Speed: Extremely slow (1–2 km/h), but capable of sudden bursts up to 10 km/h when disturbed
Special Features:
- Plate-Armor Exoskeleton: Dense tectonic-like plating capable of resisting most attacks
- Crushing Arm: A single organic clamp shaped like ridged chitin and mineral growth, exerting immense force
- Acidic Mucus Defense: Excretes a glowing corrosive mucus from its underside, burning organic tissue and deterring predators
- Burrowing Retreat: Can bury itself into the seabed, leaving only glowing “fault lines” exposed, mimicking vent fissures
Game Mechanics
- Armor Class (AC): 18 (Reinforced Plating)
- Hit Points (HP): 80
- Speed: 20 ft. (crawling), 10 ft. (burrowing)
Attacks
- Crushing Clamp: +6 to hit, 3d8 bludgeoning damage. If the target is smaller, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be grappled.
- Acid Spray (Recharge 5–6): Releases glowing acidic mucus in a 20 ft. cone. Creatures in the area must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 6d6 acid damage on a failed save, or half on success.
- Defensive Curl: As a reaction, the Kaurum tucks in its limbs, gaining +4 AC until its next turn but cannot move or attack.
Special Abilities
- Extreme Pressure Resistance: Immune to crushing depth and cold damage
- Bioluminescent Fault Lines: Pulsing fissures can serve as camouflage among vent light or faint communication signals
- Ancient Resilience: Some individuals survive for centuries, their shells resembling fossilized terrain
Behavior
- Diet: Scavenger — carrion, decomposed matter, remains of large kills
- Social Structure: Solitary, but groups gather in hydrothermal feeding grounds
- Activity Pattern: Constantly active at a slow pace; reacts only when disturbed
Survival Strategies:
- Immovable Camouflage: When buried, looks indistinguishable from volcanic rock
- Opportunistic Feeding: Trails large predators like the Motruz, consuming their leftovers
- Defensive Aggression: If cornered, sprays acid and clamps down with crushing arms
Reproduction and Lifecycle
The Kaurum reproduces rarely and invests heavily in survival, ensuring long-lived offspring.
Reproductive Traits
- Spawning Season: Unknown
- Egg Laying: Females lay 20–50 eggs, attaching them to vent ridges
- Hatching Time: 6–8 months
- Juvenile Growth: Young Kaurum remain hidden in crevices, growing slowly over decades
Lifespan and Mating Behavior:
- Total Lifespan: 500+ years, among the longest-living creatures in the Dark Sea
- Mating Rituals: Believed to involve bioluminescent signaling displays along shell fissures
- Spawning Locations: Deep volcanic trenches, where heat and minerals protect developing larvae
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
The Kaurum is best used as an environmental hazard or mythic encounter:
- Living Terrain: Adventurers may mistake a dormant Kaurum for volcanic rock until it stirs, creating a sudden ambush of crushing clamps and acid spray
- Environmental Hazard: Exploring hydrothermal zones may trigger multiple buried Kaurum defending territory
- Strategic Combat: Its high defense forces players to outthink rather than overpower it
- Harvest Opportunity: Fragments of shell or collected mucus could be crafted into acid-resistant armor or corrosive weapon coatings
- Mythic Guardian: An ancient Kaurum, 10 meters across, could embody “The Stone That Remembers,” treated as a sacred obstacle by Native Tribes and encountered as a living relic
