FIRETOWN COURIER STATION

Overview

The Firetown Courier Station was the primary logistics hub for the Firetown Courier Service, handling all incoming and outgoing caravans on the frontier routes. As the Dark Side terminus of the supply network, it received goods and passengers from New Kourou and dispatched local ore, provisions, and personnel back along the same lines.

Following the formation of the Federal Confederation in 2632, the station was nationalized under the Federal Allotment Agency and rebranded the Federal Courier Service Station of Firetown.

Architectural Significance

  • Construction Material: Thick volcanic-stone walls with insulated interior linings; no windows—only narrow viewing slots to guard against the Dark Side’s cold and storms
  • Floors: 2 (no basement)
  • Roof & Roofline: Short-Wave Antenna (retractable mast for connection to the Exohuman Shortwave Radio Network), Neon Signage (Weatherproof neon “Firetown Courier Station – Welcome to Ralar”) mounted above the entrance
  • Geothermal Feed Vents: Insulated steel stacks and vent assemblies integrated into the rear façade, channeling heat and hot water from the Geothermal Power Plant to maintain interior temperature
  • Design Purpose: Built for resilience in perpetual darkness and sub-zero temperatures, with minimal exterior openings and robust thermal sealing

Building Structure

Ground Floor – Arrival & Departure Hall

  • Delivery Bay: Large arched stone doors for Firetown Courier Service wagons; internal rollers convey cargo to sorting tables
  • Passenger Waiting Area: Sturdy benches and heated hydra-troughs; narrow viewing slots admit only faint glimmers of geothermal-heated air
  • Public Restrooms: Two gender-neutral stalls with AuroraSan fixtures
  • External Courier Mounts Stable: Enclosed corral lined with heated grates for Hoos
  • Arrival & Departure Yard: Covered stone forecourt where wagons unload and load:
  • Passenger Platform: A raised wooden deck with a step-stool ramp where travelers boarded passenger carts once the animals were watered and harnesses checked. A small Canteen Stall stands at one end—rustic counter serving hot tea, broth, and simple fare to steady nerves before departure.

Second Floor – Administration & Offices

  • Station Manager’s Office: Heavy stone desk, route maps, and a Desktop Shortwave Transceiver (extended-reserve console tied into the Shortwave Radio Network)
  • Clerks’ Offices (2): Manifest ledgers, payment counters, reservation boards
  • Meeting Room: Briefing space for Firetown Courier Service staff and occasional Guarding Trooper liaisons
  • Staff Restrooms: Two gender-neutral stalls with AuroraSan fixtures

Look and Feel

Inside, the station is bathed in the steady glow of electric lanterns hung from copper brackets — warm pools of light amid perpetual darkness. The air is redolent of mineral-laced warmth, rising from the geothermal-fed heating ducts beneath flagstone floors. Hoos stampede across the hall with soft thuds as porters heft heavy crates, while weary travelers huddle on benches clutching travel pouches and murmuring about distant journeys.

Near the baggage racks, a small group of gaunt figures sit in hollow-eyed silence — recent survivors of the Entertainment District’s excesses. Their clothes hang loose and threadbare; trembling hands nurse chipped ceramic mugs of bitter tea salvaged from the station canteen. Ashen and sober, they stare at the floorboards, coming to terms with debts lost to rigged games and empty promises.

Clerks call out inventory codes and departure times in clipped voices as passengers check timetables. Narrow viewing-slots high on the walls frame only blackness outside, reinforcing the station’s refuge-like ambiance. A lone Guarding Bot stands watch by the staircase, its quiet servo-whirr the station’s constant heartbeat.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Station Manager (1): Oversees all arrivals/departures, liaises with Firetown Courier Service
  • Administrative Clerks (2–3): Process manifests, collect fees, schedule runs
  • Cart Guides (Variable): Marshal wagons in the yard, guide Hoos, and escort sensitive loads
  • Stable Hand (1): Tends and feeds Hoos, maintains heated stalls

Non-Human Staff:

  • Maintenance Bots (2): The Maintenance Bots service wagons and station equipment
  • Cleaning Bots (2): The Cleaning Bot sweeps floors, clear debris, and top up lantern fuel
  • Guarding Bot (1): The Guarding Bot secures the main entrance

Public Access & Operational Rhythm

  • Public Access: Designated areas only (waiting hall, delivery bay); offices require authorization
  • Operating Hours: Monday–Saturday: 06:00–22:00; emergency runs on-call overnight for a premium
  • Operational Rhythm: Early hours see heavy inbound ore; late mornings dispatch provisions; afternoons handle passenger transfers and paperwork

Security Measures

  • Guarding Bot Patrol: Armed with a Guarding Trooper Stun Gun, the station’s bot patrols the foyer and yard 24/7
  • Viewing Slot Shutters: Reinforced shutters on all exterior slits, closed during storms or security alerts
  • Guest Registration: All visitors and couriers logged at arrival; identity checks enforced by clerks
  • Cargo Verification: Dual sign-off required for high-value or sensitive shipments

Player Interaction Possibilities

  • Book passage or freight on the next run to Hope or New Kourou
  • Check in cargo and receive a shipment receipt
  • Serve as a Cart Guide through the twilight corridors of the Dark Side
  • Investigate a misdelivered crate or missing manifest

Illegal Interactions

  • Smuggle contraband hidden within ore crates
  • Bribe clerks for unrecorded shipments
  • Sabotage rival cargo to create supply disruptions

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Firetown Courier Station offers a versatile setting for logistics-focused adventures:

  • The Silver Crate - The station’s Guarding Bot sounds a low klaxon: a heavy, silver-lined crate destined for Firetown's industrial safe-house has been flagged as suspicious. Its manifest still reads “medical supplies,” but the driver swears it rattles like loose machinery — and those cloaked figures trailing the caravan from New Kourou weren’t ordinary bandits. The Station Manager pleads with the PCs: “Before we send it on, inspect it. If it’s just gear, fine — but if someone’s hiding more… we need to know.” As the crate’s lock clicks open, the station’s shortwave console crackles a garbled alert: “SECURITY BREACH — BOMB DETECTED.” Before the words finish scrolling, a thunderous roar rocks the station. The silver‐lined crate detonates in the foyer, sending shards of polyglass and timber splinters through the assembly hall. When the dust clears, the mangled remains of the Station Manager lie beneath collapsed holo‐kiosk frames, and the building groans under structural stress. The PCs get hired to hunt down the unknown sender of the bomb …
