DRAELITH

Overview

The Draelith is a towering stilt-limbed predator that haunts the wind-carved flats and basalt shelves of the Ralar Region on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Its hollow, translucent dorsal carapace serves as both a resonator and shield, letting the creature read the night through vibration rather than sight. In the absence of light, Draeliths hunt by stillness, feeling micromovements through their needle-fine tarsi and using infrasonic pulses to panic or pin prey.

Feared by wanderers and herders alike, a single Draelith can shadow a caravan for hours, never rushing—just adjusting its long, insectile gait until the final, precise strike.

Exohumans have recorded only a handful of encounters with the Draelith, most of them during the exploratory expeditions of the Beta Age. In one rare case, scientists from the Last Frontier University examined a dead specimen and proposed the controversial hypothesis that the Draelith’s design and physiology suggest an off-world origin, as its structure shares little in common with other known fauna of VOI 700 D. However, this remains only a hypothesis, since vast stretches of the Dark Side remain unexplored and could conceal lineages yet unknown.

Physique and Appearance

  • Height (at rest): 2.2–2.8 meters (up to 3 m when fully extended)
  • Mass: 120–160 kg
  • Build: Four primary stilt legs + two shorter raptorial forelimbs tucked under thorax
  • Carapace: Translucent, hollow “bell” over the dorsal cavity; faint subdermal opalescence visible only at close range
  • Cuticle: Matte charcoal with mineral frosting; sheds dust easily, no reflective sheen
  • Head: Narrow, sensor ridges in place of eyes; hinged piercing rostrum for feeding
  • Gait: Silent, pendulum-smooth stride; can “lock” joints to become statue-still

Special Features

  • Seismic Sense: Tarsi packed with mechanoreceptors detect footfalls and breathing at distance through ground coupling
  • Resonance Cavity: Hollow carapace emits/receives infrasound; used to probe terrain and startle prey
  • Tendon Latch Strike: Forelimbs store elastic energy; releases in a near-silent, high-speed impalement
  • Thermal Frugality: Low baseline metabolism; can remain motionless for days in subzero wind

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 16 (rigid carapace, narrow profile)
  • Hit Points (HP): 110
  • Speed: 40 ft. (land), Climb 20 ft. (basalt, scree)

Attacks

  • Raptorial Lunge: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., 2d10+4 piercing. On hit, target must succeed on DC 15 STR save or be restrained (impaled/pinned) until end of its next turn.
  • Rostrum Pierce: +6 to hit, 1d8+4 piercing. Against restrained targets, deals an extra 1d8.

Special Abilities

  • Infrasonic Pulse (Recharge 5–6): 20-ft. radius tremor-aura. Creatures on the ground make a DC 14 CON save or become disoriented (disadvantage on attacks and Perception that rely on hearing/touch) until end of next turn.
  • Seismic Blindfight: Blindsight 60 ft. when in contact with ground; ignores visual obscurity and darkness while grounded.
  • Statue Stillness: Advantage on Stealth when motionless; creatures have disadvantage to detect it beyond 30 ft. in windy conditions.

Behavior

  • Diet: Carnivorous (ambushes medium fauna; scavenges on occasion)
  • Social Structure: Solitary; loose spacing in favorable flats
  • Activity Pattern: Most active during katabatic winds and thermal lulls

Hunting Strategies

  • Shadow Trail: Matches pace with moving groups just outside their sensing range, striking stragglers
  • Wind Masking: Times approaches with gusts; uses infrasound to scatter smaller prey into kill lanes
  • High-Post Lurk: Mounts basalt spires, then descends in long, quiet steps to intercept

Reproduction and Lifecycle

  • Breeding: Rare, opportunistic; pairs meet at lee-side calderas during pressure inversions
  • Egg Case: Mineralized ootheca cemented under overhangs; 6–10 nymphs hatch after ~9 weeks
  • Development: Nymphs are ground-skittering miniatures; reach adult size in 5–6 years
  • Lifespan: Estimated 80–100 years

Look and Feel

A shape taller than a rider emerges from the haze—legs like black reeds, body a mute bell. It stops when you stop. When you move, it moves—never hurried, never close, until the wind drops and the ground hums once. Then the world is only cold, the click of tendon, and two needles stitching the dark.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

  • Terrain Clock: Use wind strength and ground type as stealth modifiers; on bare basalt the Draelith is almost silent.
  • Pulse Control: Open with Infrasonic Pulse to sow disadvantage, then Raptorial Lunge to pin a target.
  • Pressure Play: Let it harry camps at night—footprints on the perimeter, a pinned pack animal at dawn.
  • Counterplay Hooks: Vibration dampeners, hanging walkways, or gravel trenches can negate seismic advantage.

Known Threats/Competitors:

  • Glaciok (rare territorial clashes)
  • Korozo packs (harass nymphs)
