NEW KOUROU COURIER SERVICE CARTS

The carts of the New Kourou Courier Service (NKCS) were the first purpose-built freight vehicles of the ExoHumans on VOI 700 D, setting the mechanical standard later refined by the Gamma Age Federal Courier Service. Two distinct models were produced in the NKCS workshop:

• Type 1 – Habitual Belt Model: A metal-plated, orange-red cargo cart built for the mild, perpetual-twilight climate of the Asari Region. Operated by the New Kourou Courier Service.

• Type 2 – Dark Side Model: A fully enclosed, bright blue-and-white cart commissioned by the Firetown Courier Service for the frigid Trade Route corridor between Firetown (in the icy Ralar Region) and New Kourou.

Both types shared the same core frame, dimensions, and load capacity — the blueprint later adopted wholesale by the Federal Confederation.

• Dimensions: 4 m (L) × 2 m (W) × 2.5 m (H) for every NKCS cart.
• Structure: Lightweight alloys and salvaged metal composites from the Last Frontier, reinforced against both heat and cold. The metal replaced the earlier timber prototypes used during the first settlement months.
• Wheels: Spiked-tread wheels for traction on mud, ice, or shifting sand across both Twilight plains and Dark Side glaciers.

• Type 1: Open front driver’s bench with a curved wind visor, no cabin or heating — designed for mild twilight weather.
• Type 2: Enclosed, insulated cabin with a bio-ethanol heated seat, sealed windshield, and mechanical wipers for sub-zero Ralar nights.

• Capacity: Up to 3 000 kg in both models.
• Insulation: Full thermal lining (critical for Type 2; redundant but included in Type 1).
• Lighting: See *Lighting and Navigation* (applies only to Type 2).

• Capacity: Ten passengers seated along the walls.
• Heating: Bio-heaters (Type 2 only).

• Standard lockers for food, water, medical kits, and Hoo fodder on both cart types.

• Twin near-range headlamps plus a retractable far-beam search-light, powered by a dedicated Quantum Fusion Battery salvaged from the *Last Frontier*.
• Navigation relied on a magnetic compass.
• Gamma-Age Retrofit (post-2631): After nationalisation, most Type 2 carts were upgraded by the Federal Lumi Manufactory with low-draw bioluminescent lantern modules using cultured Luminofera dualis, eliminating the need for scarce Quantum Fusion cells.

Every cart, regardless of type, was pulled by a pair of sturdy Hoos, outfitted with weatherproof blankets for Ralar runs and lighter tack for Asari deliveries.

• Emergency Firework Display: One signal mortar beneath the driver’s seat, colour-coded for NKCS convoys (purple-white burst).
• Cargo Locks: Mechanically coded padlocks on all rear doors.
• Whistle: Every driver carried a carved wooden whistle to alert other carts in the convoy.

The NKCS carts embodied the improvised ingenuity of early Beta-Age engineering. Built in workshops from salvaged alloys and mechanical scrap, they looked less like factory products and more like survival machines beaten into shape by necessity.

• Type 1 (Habitual Belt Model): These orange-red carts combined salvaged spaceship metal with timber framing. Their enclosed cargo cabins and exposed driver benches gave them a patchwork charm. Heavy lorry-like wheels, repurposed from Last Frontier transport units, rumbled over the twilight plains, their metallic rims catching the sunset glow.

• Type 2 (Dark Side Model): Finished in cobalt-blue and white trim, the Dark Side carts were sealed iron cabins on wheels — functional, heavy, and luminous against the ice. Frost-glazed metal, glowing headlamps, and reinforced hull seams created the impression of rolling survival pods braving the Ralar corridor.

• Atmosphere: Riding in a NKCS cart was a noisy, rattling ordeal of creaking joints and snorting Hoos. Type 1 passengers faced chill twilight winds; Type 2 travelers huddled in dim, cramped interiors lit by weak lamps or glowing Luminofera dualis. Despite the discomfort, the sight of orange and blue convoys cutting through mist or frost became an enduring symbol of the Free State’s determination to connect its scattered frontier settlements.

• Bench-Seat Peril (Type 1): Exposed drivers in Twilight rainstorms or sand squalls provide tense survival challenges.
• Ice-Road Convoy (Type 2): Guard a heated NKCS cart across Ralar ice fields, fending off wildlife or bandit ambushes.
• Cargo Switcheroo: Smugglers may exploit identical cart dimensions to swap crates between NKCS and Firetown Courier Service manifests.
