WEBER COMMUNICATION COMPANY (WCC)

The Weber Communication Company (WCC) was a pioneer in Exohuman communication technology, laying the foundation for real-time communication between settlements on VOI 700 D. In addition to establishing the critical shortwave communication network, WCC operated Weber Broadcasting Services, which played a key role in delivering cultural content and vital information to settlers.

From its inception, Klaus Weber pledged that the network would function without reliance on Quantum Fusion Batteries (QFBs), as he recognized that these valuable power sources were crucial for life-supporting systems and could not be wasted on communication infrastructure. Instead, he assured the Federal Council that his team would design the network using alternative energy sources such as wind, microbial fuel cells, geothermal power, and solar-adaptive panels.

Despite challenges, Weber kept his promise, and the shortwave network was successfully deployed without tapping into QFB reserves. However, its reliance on natural energy sources made the network prone to instability, with frequent signal disruptions during storms, volcanic activity, or prolonged twilight conditions. Nevertheless, WCC’s achievement in establishing long-range communication without draining critical energy supplies remains a landmark feat in ExoHuman engineering.

History

The Early Years (2625–2626)

Following the crash of the Last Frontier, the settlers faced a harsh and resource-limited environment. Klaus Weber proposed the creation of a shortwave network to bridge the communication gap between settlements. On October 15, 2625, he pitched his idea to the Settler’s Council of the Free State of Settlers, highlighting shortwave’s low energy consumption and adaptability in extreme conditions.

The Council approved the project and sold Weber salvaged parts from the Last Frontier to build the network. The network’s construction began immediately, with a team of 100 engineers and laborers, including several former spacecraft technicians. Over the next 14 months, they built key relay stations, including the Mount Atrana Communication Outpost, which became the cornerstone of the network. To meet increasing demand, WCC also constructed a manufacturing facility in New Kourou, dedicated to producing the Shortwave Communications Device (SWRWC).

By the end of 2626, WCC had successfully linked the settlements of New Kourou, Hope, Morningstar, and Firetown, creating the first exohuman communication network on VOI 700 D.

Role During the Great War (2628–2630)

When the Great War against the Alliance of Native Tribes erupted, WCC’s infrastructure was repurposed for military communication. The Guarding Troopers Special Forces and the Volunteer Army of Man (VAM) relied on the Shortwave Communications Devices (SWRWC) to coordinate troop movements and broadcast emergency alerts. These devices became essential for tactical planning and battlefield coordination, ensuring real-time communication between front-line commanders and headquarters.

WCC factories shifted production from civilian devices to rugged, military-grade versions capable of handling extreme battlefield conditions. The Weber Broadcasting Services pivoted from entertainment to war-time propaganda, urging settlers to unite against external threats.

Post-War Transition and Federalization (2631–Present)

After the war, the signing of the Peace Treaty with the Alliance of Native Tribes and the introduction of Communardism drastically altered WCC’s role. The Federal Confederation nationalized all private companies, declaring their assets federal property for the benefit of the citizens. On July 4, 2631, WCC and Weber Broadcasting Services were merged into the newly created Federal News Agency (FNA).

The shortwave network was restricted to law enforcement and government agencies, and private access was permanently revoked. Despite these changes, Klaus Weber remained integral to the network, personally requesting to serve as a technician at the Mount Atrana Communication Outpost, a position he still holds. His hands-on work and commitment to maintaining the shortwave network have earned him the nickname “The Godfather of Communication.”

Shortwave Communications Device (SWRWC)

The Weber Communication Company (WCC)`s Shortwave Communication Device became a cornerstone of Exohuman communication during the Beta Age. Known for its rugged design and innovative power source, the device provided reliable medium- to long-range communication, even in the harshest conditions on VOI 700 D. Initially used for inter-settlement coordination and law enforcement, it later played a pivotal role during the Great War for military communication and emergency alerts. In the Gamma Age, the device remains essential for Federal and Local Sheriffs, facilitating patrol coordination and crisis response. Beyond tactical use, the device also served as a radio receiver for settlers to listen to daily broadcasts from Weber Broadcasting Services, bringing news, music, and entertainment into their homes.

Network Infrastructure and Technology

The shortwave communication network, developed by the Weber Communication Company (WCC) in the Beta Age, serves as a critical link between Exohuman settlements on VOI 700 D. Due to the settlers’ limited resources and energy constraints after the crash landing of the Last Frontier, the network was designed to be low-energy and highly reliable, utilizing shortwave radio technology rather than more advanced but energy-consuming systems. This adaptation became vital for maintaining governance, law enforcement, and emergency coordination.

The network is supported by five relay stations, each strategically located in the major settlements and on Mount Atrana, ensuring comprehensive communication coverage across the Asari and Ralar Regions.

Relay Stations and Locations:

  • Mount Atrana Communication Outpost: The central signal amplifier of the network, this station ensures long-range communication across all settlements. Powered by wind turbines, it is critical for relaying signals between the mountainous regions and lowland settlements.
  • Morningstar Relay Station: Located within Morningstar, just 15 km from Mount Atrana’s summit, this relay station is crucial for local communication within the Atrana Mountains. It also uses wind turbines due to the high-altitude location and consistent airflow.
  • New Kourou Relay Station: Positioned in the Public Services Ring of New Kourou, this station is the administrative hub for network management. Due to the twilight conditions and lack of consistent direct sunlight, microbial fuel cells are the primary power source, supplemented by solar panels adapted to the diffuse light. These innovative energy solutions ensure continuous operation despite the settlement’s unique environment.
  • Hope Relay Station: Located along the Arla River, Hope’s relay station plays a crucial role in maintaining communication within the fertile heart of the Federal Confederation. It relies on microbial fuel cells, which thrive in the region’s high humidity and abundant organic resources, making it ideal for the tropical environment.
  • Firetown Relay Station: As Firetown is located near Volcano Ralar, this station is powered by a nearby geothermal power plant. It provides communication for the Ralar Region.

In addition to these major relay stations, Weber Communication Company deployed smaller repeater stations in remote areas to improve signal stability and prevent communication blackouts. These efforts ensured that even the most isolated farms or outposts could remain connected to the broader network, strengthening the settlers' resilience and survival prospects.
