PHARMACY OF NEW KOUROU

Overview

The Pharmacy of New Kourou was the largest pharmacy in the Free State of Settlers. It was fully automated — with no Exohuman staff — relying entirely on Butler Bots to verify prescriptions, handle payments, and dispense medication.

Serving both individual patients (B2C) and institutional clients (B2B) like the Hospital of New  Kourou and the neighboring Medical Station, it handled everything from routine refills to bulk deliveries. Nearly 80 % of its inventory — capsules, nano‑vials, and more — came straight from Schreder Pharma Inc.’s New Kourou plant. All medicines were strictly prescription‑only, with each script verified by the Butler Bot behind the counter.

After the founding of the Federal Confederation, all medicine production and distribution were nationalized into the Federal Pharma Manufactory under the supervision of the Federal Allotment Agency. Pharmacies were abolished and replaced by a direct distribution network operating through medical practices and the Hospital of New  Kourou.

Architectural Significance

  • Construction Material: Salvaged bulkheads and shelving from the Last Frontier infirmary; the dispensing counter is the original starship pharmacy desk.
  • Floors: 1
  • Design Aesthetic: Spartan and utilitarian — exposed alloy ribs, wall racks of recycled med-crates, and a single tinted viewport used as a customer display screen.

Building Structure

  • Single-Storey Layout
  • Dispensing Counter & Waiting Niche: Front-of-house zone where the Butler Bot verifies prescriptions, takes Kourou payments, and issues meds. Two bolted shuttle seats serve as the waiting niche.
  • Stock Warehouse (rear): Climate-controlled room with coded drawer towers for nano-vials, blister strips, and infusion packs. A short conveyor links shelves to the front counter for rapid fulfilment.

Look and Feel

Entering the Pharmacy feels like stepping into a section of the Last Frontier frozen in time: dull-grey panels, green emergency strip-lights, and the faint odour of disinfectant mixed with polymer. A single Butler Bot glides behind the ancient counter, servo-arms flicking open metal drawers with practiced precision.

Shelves carry colour-coded canisters bearing Schreder Pharma’s minimalist logo, while a wall screen loops dosage tutorials and price charts. The ambience is efficient, almost impersonal — healthcare distilled to a quiet transaction.

Roles and Responsibilities

Human Oversight

  • State Pharmacology Officer (1, off-site): Audits inventory, approves procurement contracts with Schreder Pharma, and authorises price lists.

Automated Staff

  • Butler Bot – Dispensing (1): Validates prescriptions, collects payment, issues medication, and provides basic dosage counselling.
  • Guarding Bot (1): A Guarding Bot was permanently stationed at the entrance, armed with a Guarding Trooper Stun Gun to deter theft or fraud.
  • Cleaning Bot (1): A Cleaning Bot maintained sterile floors, counter surfaces, and rear storage aisles after each business day.

Public Access, Operating Hours and Operational Rhythm

  • Public Access: Prescription holders only; script scanned at the counter.
  • Operating Hours: Monday–Saturday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM; emergency window (via intercom hatch) 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM for hospital discharges.
  • Daily Flow: Morning restock from Schreder Pharma by the New Kourou Courier Service → mid-day outflux of routine meds → late emergency fulfilment from hospital scripts → at 6:15 PM a second Guarding Bot collects the day’s Kourou takings in a lock-box and escorts them to the New Homeland Bank.

Security Measures

  • Guarding Bot Presence: One unit stationed inside the doorway during all open hours.
  • Prescription Verification: Counter software cross-checks hospital records to prevent duplicate fills.
  • Trooper Patrols: Guarding Troopers passed the storefront twice per shift as part of the medical-cluster route.
  • Escorted Revenue-Transfer: A second Guarding Bot collected the day’s Kourou takings in a lock-box and escorts them to the New Homeland Bank.

Legal interactions:

  • Present a valid prescription and pick up your meds
  • Ask the Butler Bot for dosage advice or check for possible contra‑indications.
  • Set up a standing refill order for chronic‑care meds (B2C) or arrange a weekly bulk drop for the hospital or Medical Station (B2B).
  • Deliver drugs as a cart driver for the New  Kourou Courier Service.

Illegal activities:

  • Hack the Butler Bot to dispense restricted nano-painkillers.
  • Bribe the Guarding Bot’s maintainer to turn a blind eye during a late-night break-in.
  • Forge scripts to siphon black-market stimulants.
  • Swap bar-codes on crates destined for the hospital.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

The Pharmacy is perfect for stealthy thefts, moral quandaries over medicine scarcity, or hostage-style standoffs when someone needs drugs the system won’t dispense.

Adventure Hook Example

  • Counterfeit Crisis: Fake NeuroCalm floods New Kourou, causing mysterious overdoses. The party must trace the counterfeit supply chain back to its source before panic spirals into full‑blown hysteria.
