KLAUS WEBER

Race and Faction

Background

Klaus Weber was born in 2580 aboard the spaceship Last Frontier into a family with deep roots in engineering and leadership. His father, Siegfried Weber, was a prominent engineer responsible for the X-ray communications system of the Last Frontier, which enabled secure data exchanges with observation stations on Earth. His mother, Hana Takahashi, held a PhD in Biology and was elected twice as a member of the Starship Council, where she helped shape key policies for the ship’s survival and governance.

As their only child, Klaus inherited his parents’ intellectual curiosity and technical brilliance. He quickly became one of the most talented engineers of his generation at Last Frontier University. However, unlike many of his peers, Klaus declined the opportunity to pursue a PhD, insisting that he was more of a “hands-on inventor” than an academic. His passion lay in solving practical problems and building real-world solutions.

The Visionary Inventor

Following the crash-landing on VOI 700 D in 2625, the high-tech communication networks of the Exohumans were destroyed. Klaus Weber recalled his studies on 20th-century shortwave communication networks on Earth and realized that a similar system could be adapted for the harsh conditions on the new planet.

In 2626, Klaus pitched his concept for a Shortwave Radio Network and a corresponding Shortwave Communication Device (SWRWC) to the Settler`s Council of the Free State of Settlers. His plan was approved, and Klaus transitioned from engineer to entrepreneur, founding the Weber Communication Company (WCC) to build the network and manufacture the devices. He also launched the Weber Broadcasting Services (WBS) to serve as a cultural and informational hub for the settlers. His vision was not only to restore communication but also to unite the settlers and preserve their shared cultural identity in their new home.

Role During the Great War (2628–2630)

Despite his pacifist beliefs and close ties to the Honga Tribe—Klaus spoke fluent Honga and had been married to a Honga woman who tragically died during the war — his inventions were repurposed for military use during the Great War. The Guarding Troopers and Volunteer Army of Man (VAM) relied heavily on the Weber for battlefield communication and tactical coordination.

The war deeply disillusioned Klaus. Seeing his creations used for violence and destruction conflicted with his principles and broke his spirit. The death of his wife only compounded his grief and left him questioning humanity’s capacity for peace.

Post-War Transition and Life at the Atrana Mountain Communication Outpost (2631–Present)

After the signing of the Peace Treaty in 2631, the Weber Communication Company and Weber Broadcasting Services were nationalized and merged into the Federal News Agency (FNA). Klaus welcomed this transition, seeing it as an opportunity to leave behind the burden of entrepreneurship and the painful memories of the war.

In a surprising move, Klaus personally applied for a position as a technician at the Atrana Mountain Communication Outpost—a remote, wind-powered relay station in the Atrana Mountains, known as the “Lighthouse.” There, Klaus dedicated himself to maintaining the shortwave communication network, embracing a simpler, more peaceful life away from politics and conflict. His hands-on work earned him the nickname “The Godfather of Communication” among the few who knew of his pivotal role.

Current Role

  • Job Title: Technician, Atrana Mountain Communication Outpost

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the maintenance and operation of the shortwave communication network.
  • Performs repairs and upgrades on communication systems, ensuring reliable long-range communication.
  • Acts as an unofficial mentor to young technicians visiting the outpost.

Personality

Klaus Weber is a deeply reflective and pragmatic individual with a warm, yet reserved demeanor. His disillusionment with human nature following the Great War tempered his once-optimistic outlook, but it did not extinguish his desire to contribute positively to society.

  • Traits: Inventive, empathetic, principled
  • Values: Peace, cultural preservation, practical problem-solving
  • Languages: Fluent in Honga, ExoEnglish

Despite his introverted nature, Klaus enjoys mentoring younger generations and sharing stories of the early days of the Free State of Settlers. Those who meet him often leave with a newfound appreciation for the importance of communication and unity in times of hardship.

  • Persuasion: His calm demeanor and reputation grant him advantage on Charisma checks when negotiating with settlers or technicians.

Special Abilities:

  • Lighthouse Technician: Klaus has advantage on Intelligence-based checks related to communication technology and shortwave networks.
  • Native Connection: Gains insight into Honga culture and language, allowing him to interpret symbols or negotiate more effectively with Native tribes.

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Klaus Weber is a versatile NPC for scenarios involving communication technology, engineering challenges, and moral dilemmas. His role evolves significantly between the Beta Age and Gamma Age, providing unique story opportunities in both periods.

Beta Age Scenarios (2625–2630)

During the Beta Age, Klaus Weber is at the peak of his career as an inventor and entrepreneur. His involvement in building and expanding the shortwave network makes him a valuable ally and a central figure in technological advancements.

Potential Scenarios:

  • Network Expansion: Players are tasked with helping Klaus establish a new relay station in a remote or dangerous region. Environmental hazards, technical challenges, and possible interference from hostile factions create multiple obstacles.
  • Prototype Testing: Klaus invites players to test an experimental upgrade for the Shortwave Communication Device. The mission quickly escalates when unforeseen consequences arise, requiring creative problem-solving.
  • Supply Sabotage: A shipment of crucial components for the shortwave network is stolen. Players must retrieve it before the network’s expansion is delayed or compromised.
  • Cultural Outreach: Klaus seeks the players' help in negotiating with the Honga Tribe to gain access to resources for microbial fuel cells, fostering collaboration between settlers and Natives.

Gamma Age Scenarios (2631–Present)

By the Gamma Age, Klaus Weber has withdrawn from public life, living a reclusive yet vital role at the Atrana Mountain Communication Outpost. His disillusionment and knowledge of ExoHuman history make him a key figure for players involved in uncovering secrets or challenging federal control.

Potential Scenarios:

  • Network Sabotage: Players must assist Klaus in repairing the shortwave network after a mysterious outage threatens inter-settlement communication. The cause of the outage may involve sabotage, old-world technology, or hidden political motives.
  • Lost Transmission: An old broadcast from the Beta Age is picked up by the outpost, revealing forgotten truths or containing a distress call from a lost settlement. Players must investigate its origins and determine its significance.
  • Mentor Role: Klaus can offer technical expertise, helping players upgrade or repair communication devices critical to their mission. His guidance may include revealing rare knowledge about the shortwave network’s original design.
  • Moral Dilemma: Klaus may request the players’ assistance in preserving the independence of the Atrana Mountain Outpost from increasing federal control. Players must decide whether to protect Klaus’s autonomy or comply with federal orders.
  • Secret Past: Klaus reveals hidden details about the shortwave network's wartime use, presenting players with a difficult choice: conceal the information to protect the peace or expose the truth with unknown consequences.
