VIRRANA

Overview

The Virrana is a swift, highly adaptable feline predator native to the Tijonara Mountains in the Eastern Equatorial Section of the Habitual Belt on VOI 700 D.

A striped mountain ambusher, the Virrana blends into alpine grasses and fractured stone using bold yellow-and-brown banding. A wedge-shaped head with eagle-like golden eyes grants forward focus and glare resistance, while powerful hind limbs drive sudden cliff-to-scree leaps. Solitary and territorial, it relies on stealth, speed, and precise strikes.

Physique and Appearance

  • Length: 1.2–1.5 m
  • Shoulder Height: ~0.7 m
  • Weight: 40–60 kg
  • Fur: Sleek coat with vertical yellow and brown striping across body and tail; stripes break and taper over shoulders and hips for disruptive camouflage
  • Head: Wedge-shaped; raptor-like eyes (large golden irises, narrow pupils) set slightly forward for depth perception and glare control
  • Limbs: Elongated hind legs for explosive leaps; forelimbs with recurved claws for grappling rock and prey
  • Tail: Long, muscular, subtly finned tip aiding balance on ledges
  • Speed: Up to 80 km/h in short bursts

Special Features:

  • Striped Camouflage: Banding mimics grass shadows and rock fissures, breaking silhouette at range
  • Raptor Gaze: Eagle-like eyes reduce glare and enhance motion detection in bright alpine light
  • Silent Pads: Textured pads dampen sound on gravel and bark

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 15 (agility + low profile)
  • Hit Points (HP): 85
  • Speed: 50 ft.; Climb 30 ft.; Standing Leap 20 ft.

Attacks

  • Ambush Strike: +6 to hit, 2d8+4 slashing; deals double damage if attacking from hidden or higher elevation
  • Raking Pounce: After a 15-ft. or longer leap, target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone; on a fail the Virrana makes one claw attack as a bonus action (1d6+3)
  • Tail Feint: +5 to hit, 1d6+3 bludgeoning; on hit, target has disadvantage on its next attack against the Virrana

Special Abilities

  • Silent Hunter: Advantage on Stealth checks in rocky grassland or broken stone terrain
  • Wind Mimicry: Low, windlike growl; creatures within 10 ft. must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or suffer disadvantage on Perception checks for 1 minute
  • Perch Sense: Advantage on Acrobatics checks to balance on narrow ledges and fallen trunks

Behavior

  • Diet: Carnivorous (small to mid-sized mammals, ground birds)
  • Social Structure: Solitary; overlapping ranges only during breeding
  • Activity Pattern: Crepuscular; hunts along grass-rock ecotones and cliff shelves

Survival Strategies:

  • Stripe-Stillness: Freezes in striped cover to break outline, then sprints or leaps
  • Edge Stalking: Moves along shadowed ledges, dropping from above to initiate a chase into rough ground
  • Selective Risk: Avoids large healthy prey; targets isolated or distracted animals

Reproduction and Lifecycle

  • Mating Frequency: Biennial, rainfall-triggered
  • Territorial Duels: Males posture and body-check on narrow ledges rather than prolonged fights
  • Gestation: ~6 months; Litter: 2–3 cubs
  • Parental Care: Females train cubs in ledge-to-ledge leaping and camouflage before dispersal at ~12 months
  • Lifespan: 20–25 years (Estimation)

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

  • Seen Then Gone: Use Perception vs. Stealth contests among striped grasses and broken rock; a failed check yields only a hint of yellow-brown movement
  • Vertical Startle: Begin combat with a ledge drop and Raking Pounce, forcing the party onto uneven footing
  • Sound Misdirection: Wind Mimicry can mask approach or sow paranoia during rests
  • Territory Pressure: Tracks, scrape marks, and feather-light wind-like growls warn players before an ambush
