2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions

Initial Read-Aloud (Scene Opening)

A low hum of conversation greets you as you step into the Red Wheel — Firetown’s most infamous gambling saloon. Red lanterns glow through thick smoke, and the scent of liquor, gun oil, and perfume hangs in the air. At the center stands a steel ring, a roulette disc spinning under a blindfolded marksman’s aim.

A gunshot cracks like thunder. The crowd freezes, then erupts into cheers as chips clatter across the table.

Croupiers shuffle cards with flawless precision. At side tables, locals and Firetown visitors hunch over hands of Twenty One, chips stacked in cautious little towers as they eye the next card. A crimson neon wheel spins above the bar like a warning beacon. A Butler Bot glides toward you with smooth, almost ceremonial precision:

“Welcome to the Red Wheel,” it announces. “This establishment requires full participation. Observation without engagement is not permitted.”

The Bot extends a metallic tray, sensors focusing on your gear.“Please hand over all weapons. I will catalogue each item, register ownership, and ensure its return upon departure.”

The machine waits, patient but firm — a bouncer towering a few steps behind it, arms folded. “Guests must order at least one alcoholic beverage and place one wager every thirty minutes. Remaining on the premises without drinking or gambling is prohibited. If you require funds, the House offers initial credit of one hundred Kourou. Additional credit requires collateral and must be repaid within seven days.”

Red light flickers across the tables as another gunshot cracks from the roulette ring.

Here, luck is law — and the House always keeps its receipts.

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)

Trigger / Timing Read-Aloud or Short Narrative Insert
PCs enter the main floor The crowd is a mix of fortune-seekers, miners and curious visitors of the Entertainment District. Red glass lamps shift over tense faces. Every few minutes, the marksman fires again, and the room pauses just long enough to hear who screams.
If PCs observe the owner’s booth A glass enclosure overlooks the floor. Inside sits Colm McKeegan — strapped into an armored wheelchair, steel arms folded. His smile is calm, unreadable, dangerous.
If PCs engage with the Credit Desk A Bookmaker grins, sliding a ledger forward. “The House welcomes bold souls. First loan is 100 K. More if you’ve got something worth keeping. Collateral stays here till debt’s paid — seven days.”
If PCs move toward the card tables A dealer in a dark vest taps the felt in front of an empty chair. “Twenty One, minimum bet ten Kourou. House sticks to the rules, but luck doesn’t. You in?” The players around the table glance up, weighing you like a new card in the deck.
If PCs sit at a Twenty One table Cards whisper across the felt as the dealer slides you a Skat hand. “Two cards to start. Closest to twenty-one without breaking. You can walk away… or double down.” The regulars watch, half curious, half hungry for someone else’s bad luck.
If PCs place bets (Space Roulette) Cards flick. Chips fall. The wheel spins — then BANG. Shrapnel rattles the disc. Someone cheers; someone curses. Luck cuts like a knife here.
If PCs win ≥ 200 K quickly A Bookmaker leans in close. “Congratulations… but be careful. Too many wins and you’ll be invited upstairs.” His tone suggests that’s not an honor.
If PCs explore or look for information Between tables, a drunken Guarding Trooper slumps over a Space Beer. His jacket half-unzipped, eyes hollow. The name tag reads Lethabo Munkh. He mutters: “Should’ve walked away… damn Wheel took everything.”
If PCs approach Munkh He looks up, bitter smile forming. “You look like you’ve still got your luck. Mine’s gone.“

3 | Scene Intent

Scene Type Player Intents DM Function / Story Link

Roulette Marksman Blindfolded Guarding Trooper Execute Space Roulette shots Emotionless and ritualistic. Fires on signal, never speaks. Nearby guards call “fire!” at every spin. —
Bookmakers (3) Staff Maintain bets, sell loans Friendly front; offer credit: “100 K gets you started.” High Insight (DC 13) reveals ulterior motives. —
Bouncers (3) Cartel Enforcers Maintain control and intimidation Step in after the second infraction. Heavy coats hide stun batons. Never talk unless forced. —
Butler Bots (4) Automated Servers Enforce “drink & gamble only” rule “Non-participation detected. Please place next bet at the counter, order a drink or do both.” Butler Bots
Lethabo Munkh (only on loc if PCs haven’t met him before) Off-duty Guarding Trooper Recover his 600 K debt · Hide his shame from his pregnant wife in the Hope Region Drunk and bitter. 5 | Triggers, Clues & Consequences

Trigger / Cue (Player Action or Event) Immediate Reaction / Change Ripple Effect / Future Hook
🎫 PCs enter / pay entry Must pay 5 K and deposit weapons. Sets tone of strict control.
🥃 PCs attempt to stand and watch Butler Bot blocks them: “Observation prohibited. Please order a drink or place a bet.” Forces PCs into the economy of the Red Wheel.
🏦 PCs need money / ask about credit Bookmaker: “Minimum loan: 100 K. Additional credit requires collateral of equal value. Debt due in 7 days.” Sets debt-timer hook; collateral retrieval side quest possible. Loans can be taken for themselves or “on behalf of another unlucky soul.”
🃏 PCs sit at a Twenty One table Minimum ante: 10 K per hand. Run either a quick abstracted roll or play a short round using Twenty One rules. The first few hands are fair. Safer money flow than Space Roulette. Wins here attract less immediate Cartel attention but keep PCs at the tables longer → more chances to overhear rumors or be sized up by regulars.
🎡 PCs bet on Space Roulette They place chips on numbers or colors; on the signal, the blindfolded marksman fires at the spinning board. Resolve as high-risk gambling (DM choice); big swings possible. Faster path to big wins/losses. Any win ≥ 200 K from Roulette still starts or escalates the Cartel Heat Clock as in the existing rules.
🔫 Roulette gun fires Marksman shoots the spinning board. If PCs are within 3 m, roll DEX save (DC 10) to avoid shrapnel. Adds tension and physical risk; sets tone.
💰 PCs win big (≥ 200 K) A Bookmaker congratulates them; a bouncer quietly starts shadowing. Begin “Cartel Heat Clock”: 1 segment. At 2/4 → shadowed; 3/4 → invitation upstairs; 4/4 → confrontation.
👁️ PCs observe VIP balcony or McKeegan PERCEPTION (DC 14) notices Maria Reuter taking notes and signaling bouncers with subtle gestures. Reveals financial control; possible theft or infiltration target.
⚠️ PCs cheat or are caught snooping A bouncer grips their shoulder: “House doesn’t like curiosity.” Escalate Cartel Heat Clock by 1; potential ejection or “private talk.”
🧨 Cartel Heat Clock = 4/4 Bouncers escort PCs to a VIP booth for “verification.” Colm McKeegan greets them calmly: “We don’t like coincidences here.” Branch to interrogation or ambush scene; PCs may need to talk or buy their way out.
🗣️ PCs talk to Lethabo Munkh (off-duty Guarding Trooper) He’s drunk and bitter, venting about his 600 K loss. A CHARISMA (Persuasion) check (DC 13) + some sign of empathy gets him talking. No money, just empathy: basic gossip about the Station (shift overlaps, mention that a “17:00 circle walk” exists and that the inmate in Cell 1 is “special”). ≈ 150 K (cash or sponsored loan at the Credit Desk): clear intel on Station layout and daily schedule, including Guarding Bot patrols and the fact that interrogations usually run late morning. ≈ 300 K (cash or sponsored loan): as above, plus he promises to register a fake 10:30–11:30 interrogation slot for the Nameless Man, logged as a visit from the Local Community Center of New Kourou, and to create light paperwork distraction during that hour – unlocking the “Lethabo interrogation window” trigger in Scene 9.
🚷 PCs leave peacefully after losses No trouble. Maria Reuter quietly notes their names in the ledger. Low-level tracking flag; might be recognized later in Nebula Fight Arena.

6 | DM Notes

Tone Reminder: The Red Wheel is*Firetown at its most dangerous: seductive, smoky, and utterly predatory. Everything costs something. Even winning.

  • Mandatory Rules (Enforced by Bots & Bouncers):
  • Guests must drink and gamble.
  • No observers or “dry watchers.”
  • Minimum stake: one drink + one bet every 30 minutes.
  • Lethabo Munkh (if PC meet him here):
    1. Ashamed, scared about his wife in Hope, angry about himself. Frame him as a man who went “one step too far” by coming to the most expensive venue instead of sending the money home.
    2. If paid well, Lethabo will be crucial for the PC's mission objective of freeing the Nameless Man.
  • Card Game Option – Twenty One:
  • At the card tables, PCs can play a few rounds of Twenty One instead of jumping straight into Space Roulette.
  • - If your group enjoys it, you can briefly use the full rules from the Twenty One article (Skat deck, target 21, betting in Kourou).
  • - If you prefer speed, resolve each “round” with a single contested roll (e.g. PC vs. House using INT or WIS for cautious play, or CHA for bold/bluffing style):
  • - PC wins by 5+ → wins 20 K per 10 K ante.
  • - PC wins by 1–4 → wins 10 K per 10 K ante.
  • - Tie → no change.
  • - PC loses → loses their ante.
  • - Three or more moderate wins in a row from Twenty One can still raise quiet suspicion (start Cartel Heat Clock at 1), but it’s slower and more social than a huge Space Roulette hit.
  • Narrative Function:
    1. Deepens the Firetown web: Cartel influence, temptation, and corruption.
    2. Provides major lead toward Scene 9 (Main Mission).
    3. Optional side hook: PCs marked by Cartel may face retaliation or recruitment later.
