2 | Read-Aloud Descriptions
Opening Read-Aloud
The storm fades into silence as the convoy pushes east. Hour after hour, snow drifts past the windows like falling ash. Inside the cabin, warmth from the small ethanol heater hums through the vents, and exhaustion wraps around everyone like a blanket.
Beyond the frosted glass, the horizon glows faintly — a smear of orange and gold flickering in the distance. Firetown. The Burning Wall. You’re getting close.
If the passenger cart survived the raid, all travelers — Mira Reis, Hiram Quill, the six laborers — are aboard again. Those who began on mounts and lost them now sit beside Joren Kett in the driver’s cabin — an enclosed, insulated compartment with a bio-ethanol heated seat, sealed windshield, and mechanical wipers fighting the frost.
For the next ten hours, the Trade Route stretches on — white, silent, endless. Nothing unexpected happens, yet something about the journey feels heavy, like the world is holding its breath before the next turn.
3 | Optional NPC Interactions
| NPC | Interaction Opportunity | Notes / Information |
| Mira Reis | If the PCs ask about her past, she opens up quietly. | Mira tells her story: her parents were musicians aboard the Last Frontier, keeping morale alive during the long voyage. As a teen, she refused to perform Earth Pop covers and wrote her own songs about life among the stars. After the crash, she was trapped near the port reactor during re-entry; an explosion scarred half her face before an unknown rescuer pulled her out. Since then, she struggled to find work — most saloons said her scars reminded people of the tragedy. Only Guy Mikkelstein of the Saloon Gloria in Firetown gave her a stage, saying her songs “sounded like the truth people were afraid to hear.” Since then, she performs for couriers, miners, and travelers who value voice over beauty. |
| Hiram Quill | If the PCs haven’t spoken to him yet, he can share his background from the previous scene. | He recounts his time in Firetown Station, his penal past, and mentions the humming Guarding Bot — giving the same details as in Scene 5. If already discussed, he stays silent, staring at the frost. |
| Joren Kett | Gives local insight and practical advice. | During the last hour before arrival, Joren glances back and asks, “You got a place to stay in Firetown?”
• If not → he recommends the Saloon Gloria for fair prices and good stew: “Tell Trixi I sent you — she’ll knock a few K off.”
• Warns against the Rabbit’s Hole: “Cheap beds, but weird things happen there. People vanish, stuff goes missing. Not worth the K.”
• Joren mentions the Dark Side Hotel too: “Best place in town if you can afford it — but I doubt any of us can.” |
| Six Laborers | If engaged in conversation | They admit they were heading to the Entertainment District for a change from their daily grind. Now broke and shaken, they plan to take the next caravan back to Hope instead. |
4 | Lore Descriptions (for Optional Flavor or Investigation)
The Rabbit’s Hole Less an inn than a refuge for the broke and the broken. Its volcanic-stone walls and salvaged ship plating sweat with geothermal warmth, the air thick with steam, sour alcohol, and exhaustion. Torchlight flickers over an open counter where a Butler Bot recites house rules in monotone: “5 K or the street. No refunds. No breakfast.” Beyond the counter, two dormitories stretch into near-darkness — one filled with thin, damp mattresses, the other with cracked armchairs occupied by drunkards and gamblers who lost everything but their boots. A Zark bouncer guards the entrance beneath a hand-painted sign reading “Weapons Checked, Not Forgotten.”
The Burning Wall Originally built for defense, it was later repurposed after the Peace Treaty to regulate movement and trade. Made of dense volcanic rock, it stands as both fortress and symbol — the line where fire met ice. During the Beta Age, hundreds of torches and barrel fires lined its ramparts, burning day and night. From afar, it glowed like molten gold across the frozen dark, earning its name: *The Burning Wall.* Travelers could see it long before reaching the gates — a beacon of civilization in the void.
5 | Arrival Read-Aloud
After ten long hours, the snow begins to thin, replaced by drifting sparks of orange light. The Trade Route slopes downward, and through the haze you finally see it — Firetown.
The great wall blazes ahead, alive with torchlight and steam, a shimmering scar across the night. The air grows warmer, tasting of copper dust and burnt oil. The convoy passes under the gate — metal groaning, guards half-asleep beside barrel fires — and enters a maze of flickering color.
Firetown hums like a living thing. Steam seeps from vents, power lines hum, and neon tubes flicker above workshops, saloons, and hostels. Torchlight merges with red and green reflections from windows and signs. Somewhere ahead, a siren wails, drowned by laughter and the clang of metal doors.
Joren Kett guides the cart through the crowded streets until the sign of the Firetown Courier Station comes into view — a small compound of cobalt-blue wagons and flickering lamps at the town’s heart.
He slows, taps the brake, and turns to you. “End of the road. Welcome to Firetown.”
6 | DM Notes
- Function: Transition and decompression scene. Use it to let players rest, connect with NPCs, or absorb lore.
- Tone: Calm after hardship; anticipation before entering Firetown’s chaos.
- NPC Threads: Joren Kett → link to Firetown lodging; Mira Reis → deepens emotional resonance; Hiram Quill → mystery continuity.
- Branch Continuity:
- If the passenger cart was destroyed in Scene 4 → convoy travels with spare transport or on hoos mounts (smaller caravan).
- If PCs arrived independently on mounts → they can rejoin at Firetown’s gates, catching up just as the convoy arrives.
- Transition Hook: Leads directly to Scene 7 — Arrival at the Firetown Courier Station.
