102 Pen and Paper Adventure | Beta Age | The Man Without A Name

SCENE 4b — ZARK AMBUSH IN THE RALAR REGION

1 | Scene Overview

  • Location: Narrow pass, Atrana Mountains, Ralar Region (Dark Side)
  • Type: Wilderness · Combat · Survival
  • Era: Beta Age
  • Tone: Freezing · Primal · Sudden Violence under Green Firelight

Atmosphere & Sensory Cues: Howling wind through narrow rock gullies · snow whipped sideways like shards · Luminofera torches glowing green through the dark · Veyras huffing steam and stamping nervously · distant, echoing growl of beasts unseen

2 | Read-Aloud Description

Snow whips across the narrow pass, stinging your face and numbing your hands. Your mounts struggle against the wind — slower than Rajid promised, their flanks dark with frost. The pass is only three meters wide, sheer drops to either side, and the ice crunches under every step.

Then — a hiss through the gale. An arrow slams into the shoulder of the lead Veyra. The beast rears, screams, and collapses into the snow. Before the echo fades, green fire blossoms above the ridge — ghostly torchlight licking down through the storm.

Figures descend on ropes and clawed harnesses, wrapped in Glaciok hides and masked in bone. The air fills with snarling commands in a language you barely understand — and beneath it, the deep growl of something huge moving unseen.

The Zark have found you.

Staged Read-Alouds (Progressive Descriptions)

PCs look up the ridge Through the sleet, you spot figures leaping from ledge to ledge — bone masks flashing, green fire reflecting in their eyes. Two ride mounts of their own, flanking with speed.
PCs ready weapons or take cover The wind howls louder, carrying a low whistle — and then the growl answers. From the drift below, a hulking shape bursts through the snow: a Korozo, its blind head swinging, jaws lined with chitinous teeth.
PCs speak or shout A Zark rider lifts his torch and yells over the wind: “Food! Veyra! Magic! Leave, Two Eyes — leave, or die!”
PCs retreat or flee The Veyras scramble, slipping on the ice as another volley of arrows hisses past. Luminofera torches crash into the snow, spitting green sparks. The Zark roar and descend after you, their Korozos following the scent of fear.

6 | DM Notes

  • Tone Reminder: Start with silence and biting cold; break it with sudden chaos. Let the ambush feel unfair, not cinematic.
  • Structure: Two short combat phases —
  • 1. *Opening Volley (panic & positioning)*
  • 2. *Negotiation or Escalation (fight, trade, or fade)*
  • Environment:
  • * Visibility 15–20 m (snow & wind)
  • * Ranged attacks –2 penalty
  • * Cold exposure (CON save DC 10/hour)
  • * Narrow pass — no side-by-side combat (max 2 abreast).
  • Korozos: Use sound-based tracking. Silence or smoke confuses them.
  • Lexa Rourke: Acts as stabilizer NPC. If she loses Kelta, emotional arc extends to Firetown.
  • Parallel Cue: PCs may see distant red flare from the Trade Route Ambush — showing both stories unfold simultaneously.
  • Failure Transition: If unconscious or captured → skip to recovery at Scene 5 — Halfway Inn Aftermath.
