What Does It Mean to Be Human?

At the heart of OHATLYA lies one timeless and haunting question: What does it mean to be human? In the vast, unfeeling cosmos, far from the comforts of Earth, humanity faces a reckoning that transcends survival. Stripped of its cradle, its dominance, and its certainties, humanity must ask: Who are we, and who can we become?

1. Who Are We?

Humanity’s identity, once rooted in Earth’s soil, is now adrift. Removed from its familiar context, surrounded by alien eyes and forced to adapt to unimaginable realities, humanity must confront the essence of its being.

a) Who Are We Away from our Cradle?

Earth was humanity’s perfect habitat—a world shaped by billions of years of evolution to sustain life as we know it. It was more than home; it was the stage for our civilization, the source of our dreams, and the measure of our ambitions. Now, without the structures and comforts of Earth, humanity faces a fundamental challenge:

  • How does leaving the only world we were intrinsically connected to alter our sense of identity, purpose, and belonging?
  • Can humanity, designed for Earth, truly thrive in environments that challenge its very biology and psychology?
  • Do we inherently seek superiority wherever we go, or can we find ways to collaborate without selfish motives?
  • What does losing Earth reveal about the core of who we are?

b) Who Are We Really (through the eyes of others)?

Seen through alien eyes, humanity’s self-perception begins to unravel. Freed from the biases of human senses and the constraints of the human brain, how might others perceive us?

  • Do beings unbound by our limitations view us as fragile anomalies, invasive threats, or something else entirely?
  • Are traits like ambition, creativity, and resilience seen as virtues—or as dangerous quirks?
  • Are humans fragile anomalies, invasive threats, or just another species among countless others?
  • How do these perspectives challenge or validate the stories we tell ourselves about who we are?

2. Who Can We Become?

The future offers a daunting challenge and an extraordinary opportunity. On VOI 700 D, far from Earth’s cradle, humanity is faced with a blank slate:

  • Can we overcome the cycles of greed, ambition, and exploitation that doomed our home?
  • Freed from Earth’s legacy, can we evolve into something more?
  • How do the choices we make—under the pressures of survival, alien influence, and our own histories—shape who we become in the vastness of the cosmos?

This subtopic focuses on growth, potential, and transformation, challenging humanity to imagine a new way of being—one that balances survival with meaning, progress with stewardship, and ambition with empathy.
