PROLOGUE (A DARK CONSPIRACY)

Welcome to the year 2636.

The era of humanity on Earth is long over. You, along with 30,000 others, are the last humans in the universe. Your home lies 102 light-years from Earth: on VOI 700 D, an Earth-like planet that, for reasons still unknown, stopped spinning on its axis centuries ago.

For two hundred years, VOI 700 D has remained frozen in a fixed position relative to its sun. As a result, there is no day and night on this world. Instead, one side of the planet — the Dark Side — is cloaked in eternal darkness and bitter cold, while the other, known as the Desert Side, bakes endlessly under the unyielding glare of the sun. Only in the Habitual Belt, a narrow strip between these extremes, is life even remotely possible. Here, the world is bathed in a constant twilight, and the temperatures are tolerable.

This strange planet is now your home. Though “home” might not be the right word. You are little more than a tolerated minority, confined to four fortified reservations. The Natives — the planet’s original inhabitants — banished you there, and they are stronger, larger, and far more numerous than you. When they look at you with their four eyes, they see dangerous aliens who cannot be trusted. And frankly, they have every reason to think so.

Fifteen years ago, when your multigenerational spaceship Last Frontier came crashing down in a massive fireball, you behaved like a demonic plague. Stripped of the technology you’d depended on to colonize a new planet, you scrambled — like fish out of water — to exploit resources as quickly as possible in an effort to rebuild what you had lost. But your hastily constructed mines and factories encountered fierce resistance. The Natives quickly realized you were unaccustomed to sharing or respecting your environment. No. You wanted everything. Immediately. For yourselves alone.

But the Natives were not about to hand over their sacred lands without a fight.

Do you remember how you scoffed at their declaration of war? How you mocked them as primitive? But you soon learned the hard way that they were too many for you to defeat. For three grueling years, you mowed down countless Native warriors with your laser weapons. Yet no matter how many fell, more always came. Eventually, you had no choice but to surrender.

Now, you are starting over. And this time, everything must change.

You are no longer the dominant species. You’ve lost the war. And you must abide by the strict rules of the Natives—or face extinction.

The future of humanity hangs by a thread. What will you do to keep it from breaking?
