THE MOTRUZ
Overview
The Motruz is a colossal deep-sea predator that lurks in the Dark Sea Region on the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. As the largest known fish-like organism on the planet, the Motruz dominates the abyssal waters, growing up to 15 meters in length and weighing as much as 18 tons.
Blind but supremely adapted, the Motruz relies on echolocation and electroreception to navigate the eternal darkness. Along its flanks run ridged electroplax organs that generate devastating electric discharges, capable of paralyzing prey or fending off threats. With its immense jaws, tusk-like fangs, and surprising bursts of speed, the Motruz is the undisputed apex predator of the abyss.
Physique and Appearance
- Size: Up to 15 meters in length
- Weight: Up to 18 tons
- Body Shape: Torpedo-like but bulkier than sharks or whales, built for explosive ambushes
- Skin: Dark grey with wrinkled abyssal folds; electro-veins glow faintly with blue light when charging electricity
- Jaws: Double-hinged mouth with rows of serrated teeth and two tusk-like fangs curving outward
- Electroplax Ridges: Glowing organ lines along the flanks, pulsing before discharges
- Camouflage: Skin patterns resemble trench walls, making the Motruz nearly indistinguishable from terrain when still
- Speed: Up to 40 km/h in bursts
Special Features:
- Echolocation and Electroreception: Detects prey through sound and bioelectric signals rather than eyesight
- Electroplax Organ: Generates powerful electric shocks, stunning or killing prey
- Ambush Jaws: Double-hinged bite with serrated rows of fangs, evolved for gripping massive prey
- Abyssal Camouflage: Camouflage patterns allow it to vanish into the trench walls
Game Mechanics
- Armor Class (AC): 15 (thick skin and bulk)
- Hit Points (HP): 120 (16d12 + 40)
- Speed: 40 ft. (swimming)
Attacks
- Bite: +10 to hit, 3d10 + 6 piercing damage. On hit, the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be grappled.
- Electric Shock: Releases an electrical burst in a 20 ft. radius. All creatures in range must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 4d8 lightning damage on a failed save and being stunned until the end of their next turn.
Special Abilities
- Echolocation: Automatically detects movement within 100 ft., even in total darkness
- Electroreception: Can sense living creatures through bioelectric fields, even those hiding
- Abyssal Camouflage: Skin folds and patterns mimic trench walls, rendering it invisible when motionless
Behavior
- Diet: Omnivorous — consumes microorganisms, carrion, and massive prey
- Hunting Pattern: Prefers ambush tactics, lurking in trenches before striking at high speed
- Activity Pattern: Most active in geothermal zones where prey is abundant
Survival Strategies:
- Deep-Sea Dominance: Apex predator with no natural enemies
- Ambush Hunting: Uses camouflage and sudden bursts to seize prey
- Scavenger Tendencies: Will feed on dead creatures and wreckage, threatening submerged structures
Reproduction and Lifecycle
The Motruz reproduces via simultaneous hermaphroditism, allowing self-fertilization in extreme conditions.
Reproductive Traits:
- Reproductive Strategy: Possesses both male and female organs
- Self-Fertilization: Can fertilize its own eggs if no mate is present
- Ovoviviparous Development: Eggs hatch inside the body; live birth follows
- Gestation Period: 9–12 months
- Litter Size: 2–4 offspring, each 1.5–2 meters at birth
Lifespan and Mating Behavior
- Total Lifespan: 200–250 years
- Juvenile Growth: Young remain with parent for several months before dispersing
- Sexual Maturity: 10–15 years
- Solitary Nature: Interactions limited to reproduction or territorial conflict
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
The Motruz is a terrifying deep-sea encounter, ideal for survival-based or horror-themed campaigns:
- Ambush from Below: Can lunge at prey or vessels near the surface, dragging them into the abyss
- Sunken Mysteries: May haunt lost ruins or shipwrecks, combining natural danger with environmental storytelling
- Electric Shockwaves: Its electrical abilities make it deadly even to armored submarines or underwater fortifications
