LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTER – FIRETOWN

Overview

From late 2627 through 2631, Firetown’s Local Community Center functioned as the settlement’s administrative heart, public assembly hall, and referendum venue — despite perpetual darkness and sub-20 °C chill. It housed the elected Contact Person’s office, civil-records alcove, and two-week balloting booths. In an heated annex at the rear lays the Local GAIA Hub, a Tier-B “mini-GAIA” node providing local data governance, crisis simulation, and permit services.

After the Peace Treaty and founding of the Federal Confederation in 2632, it was rebranded the Mayor’s Office of Firetown.

Architectural Significance

  • Construction Material: Carved volcanic-stone blocks quarried from Ralar Volcano
  • Floors: Ground floor foyer & assembly hall; second floor offices & archives; no basement (hub annex in backyard)
  • Façade: Solid stone walls with narrow viewing-slots instead of windows
  • Heating & Power: Direct geothermal feed – district-heat tube supplies warmth, hot water, and emergency power to both center and GAIA annex; on-site QFB reserved for hub emergencies
  • Roof: Flat slab with grated vent for steam release and a mounted short-wave signal antenna, connected to the Shortwave Radio Network for GAIA comms and community broadcast functions

Building Structure

Ground Floor – Public Foyer & Assembly Hall

  • Foyer: Stone-flag floor, Information kiosks, bulletin boards, proposal drop-slots and two rugged Holo-Kiosks with monochrome lightfields for citizens (used for emergency alerts and basic GAIA queries)
  • Assembly Hall: Long stone benches facing a raised dais; ambient steam grates warm the floor
  • Referendum Booths: Three secure alcoves; overseen by a Guarding Bot during votes
  • Viewing-Slots: Narrow horizontal slits high on walls, admitting fleeting shafts of geothermal-heated air only
  • Public Restrooms: Two unisex stalls with integrated AuroraSan fixtures

Second Floor – Administration & Records

  • Contact Person’s Office: Heavy stone desk, visitor bench, holo-interface dashboard for referendum results and GAIA summaries
  • Clerk’s Alcove: Civil registry cabinets, land-title ledgers, permit scrolls
  • GAIA Operator’s Nook: Hardened console linked via steam-heated conduit to rear annex hub; “Vault-Quarantine” switch for emergency lockdown
  • Archive: Shelved parchment deeds, log rolls, Shellac Records of hub firmware patches and keys
  • Staff Restroom: One unisex stall with AuroraSan fixtures

Exterior Grounds

  • GAIA Local Hub Annex: Single-story volcanic-stone outbuilding at rear, housing the Tier-B GAIA node on ground-level reinforced pad
  • Geothermal Feed Tube: Insulated conduit linking plant steam to both buildings
  • Courier Desk: Covered hatch for sealed GAIA queries and notices
  • Hoo Tether Posts: Frost-resistant metal rings for Hoo parking

Look and Feel

Stepping through the heavy volcanic-stone door into the foyer, visitors find themselves on a stone-flag floor lined with information kiosks, bulletin boards, and proposal drop-slots. Two rugged holo-kiosks with monochrome lightfields stand ready for emergency alerts or basic GAIA queries. Above, electric lanterns hang from copper brackets, casting a warm pool of light that mingles with torch sconces set directly into the stone walls. The air is cool and dry, carrying a faint mineral tang and the soft hiss of nearby steam-fed conduits.

Beyond the foyer, the assembly hall’s long benches sit beneath the lantern glow. Narrow viewing-slots cut into the thick walls admit only darkness beyond. A pair of holo-indicators by the dais emit a muted green pulse to signal urgent announcements. Clerks move efficiently between desks and offices, their footsteps echoing on the stone flags. Outside, the distant sigh of geothermal vents is barely audible beneath the steady whirr of Guarding Bots patrolling the flagstone plaza.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Contact Person (1): Chairs assemblies, represents Hope at quarterly sessions in the Settler's Council.
  • Clerk (1): Maintains civil records, issues permits, tallies referendum ballots
  • Ballot Monitors (2): Guard and certify voting booths during referenda
  • GAIA Operator (1): Oversees hub integrity, uploads policy modules, runs crisis models
  • Guarding Bots (2): One patrol bot in foyer; one cell-guard in GAIA vault
  • Cleaning Bot (1): The Cleaning Bot sweeps floors, clears drop-slots, maintains restrooms

Public Access & Operations

  • Lobby Hours: 08:00–18:00 local time, Monday–Saturday
  • Permit Desk: Monday-Saturday, 08:00–12:00, 14:00–18:00
  • Assembly Hours: Wednesdays & Fridays, 10:00–16:00 for public petitions and debates
  • Referendum Periods: Quarter-start proposal window (weeks 1–6) and vote tally window (weeks 7–10)
  • GAIA Availability: Hub accessible to certified users 20 h/day; GAIA enters a 4-hour sleep cycle daily (scheduled midnight – 04:00) to conserve its QFB charge under the settlement’s rationing protocols
  • Emergency Override: Contact Person can wake GAIA immediately during crises
