Background
A ship-school kid who devoured maintenance deck maps, Lexa studied Planetary Geography at the Last Frontier University. After the crash — later known as Day Zero — she survived the inferno that consumed half the campus. Her fiancé and their unborn child did not. She had been four months pregnant. The smoke and the screams never left her dreams, nor did the sense that life on the planet began with a loss she could not name without breaking.
She meant to stay on as a university researcher, but grief made stillness unbearable. Impatience and wanderlust pulled her to the saddle — the Free State Courier Riders.
In her first week on the surface, she discovered a wounded Veyra tangled in debris near the burning plains outside New Kourou. The creature’s hide was scorched, and it was too weak to flee. Lexa stayed with it, feeding it from her ration stock and treating its burns with improvised wraps from her ship blanket. When the animal finally stood, trembling but alive, she named it Kelta — the name she had chosen for the daughter she would never meet.
Kelta has remained her companion ever since: fierce, intelligent, and bound to Lexa by shared survival. The two are rarely apart. Lexa speaks to Kelta as if to an old friend, trusting her instincts more than any map or compass. Among the riders, they are seen as one silhouette — courier and mount, moving together between dust and dusk.
As a Veyra-mounted rider under Free State tenders, Lexa runs off-route dispatches beyond the paved Trade Route — forest switchbacks, mountain scrambles, desert sink-lines — wearing the Free State armband and carrying a Quickdraw Service Token for rations and water on the Frontier Quickdraw Network. She favors non-lethal tools and will deliver “for the Office” when Ezrah Scherkenstein needs a quiet tail, a dead-drop beyond patrol lines, or a clean exfil masked as a rush delivery.
During her years on the road, Lexa learned to speak Honga, in the dialect of the Honga Tribe, and developed mutual respect with several tribal scouts who share her fascination with maps and terrain. Her fluency allows her to move across tribal territories with minimal hostility and even exchange favors — safe passage for rare supplies or news from the Free State.
Key rider notes woven into her practice:
- Freelance structure: Bids seasonal tenders; takes urgent government, private, and corporate jobs.
- Uniform ID: Armband marks authority/protection; doubles as cover when moonlighting for OfSO.
- Mount & kit: Veyra “Kelta,” route chalks, seal-sacks, field maps, Ironstrike Slingshot, Guarding Trooper Combat Knife, survival roll.
- Offroad routes: Prefers goat trails and river spurs; keeps private atlases of wind and grade.
- Quickdraw token: Guarded closely; black-market copies are common — hers is genuine.
- Linguistic Reach: Speaks fluent the Honga Dialect of Shang Telu and moderate Trando-Dialect; trades in native dialects for safety and cooperation.
Roles by Age
Beta Age (2624–2631)
- Free State Courier Rider: Urgent dispatches off-route; liaison with New Kourou & Firetown courier stations for last-leg handoffs.
- OfSO Subcontract Scout & Cartographer (2626–2631): Tails, route planning, covert exfil; dead-drops staged as courier restocks.
Personality
- Traits: Adventurous, map-obsessed, direct
- Behavior: Counts grades and wind shifts aloud; leaves tiny chalk semaphores; sketches every camp
- Values: Speed with safety; proof over rumor; non-lethal force unless cornered
Physical Attributes
- Height: 1.70 m
- Build: Rope-lean, rider’s core strength
- Appearance: Rider-scarf, scuffed riding plates, graphite-blackened fingertips; Free State armband tucked on strap
Combat Statistics
- Armor Class (AC): 13 (layered courier jacket with light plates)
- Hit Points (HP): 24
- Speed: 10 m (on foot). Mounted (Veyra “Kelta”): 12 m; ignores difficult terrain from loose gravel/sand.
- Proficiencies: Animal Handling, Survival, Perception, Athletics, Stealth, Cartographer’s Tools, Navigator’s Tools, Thieves’ Tools (anchors/climbs)
Actions
- Ironstrike Slingshot (Ranged 12 m): +4 to hit; choose ammo:
- Clay Stun-Pellet (non-lethal): On hit, DC 12 CON save or stunned until end of next turn.
- Signal Flare: Bright pulse; sheds dim light in 6 m for 1 minute; marks target’s route.
- Scatter-Shard (non-lethal): On hit, target has disadvantage on Perception checks until end of next turn.
- Trip-Line Deploy (Action): Stretch a near-invisible cord across a 2 m span; first hostile crossing makes DC 13 DEX save or falls prone.
- Veyra Bound (Mounted, Bonus): “Kelta” leaps a 2 m gap or low obstacle; Lexa gains advantage on her next Stealth or Athletics check this round (terrain masking).
Special Abilities
- Off-Route Atlas: Once/scene, declare a known goat trail or wind-shadow; party gains +1 on a group Stealth or Survival check for overland movement.
- Courier Cover: When acting under Free State armband and with a sealed pouch, Lexa gains advantage on Persuasion checks with officials or townsfolk who respect the courier code.
- Wind-Reader: Advantage on checks to predict patrol paths using sound and wind cues in canyons, alleys, or tree corridors.
- Flaws — Impatient & Bereavement Scar:
- Impatient: When told to “wait and watch,” DC 11 WIS save or she takes her bonus action to “nudge forward” (noisy gear check, step, or peek).
- Fire Memory: The first time open flames threaten a confined space in a scene, Lexa has disadvantage on her next action (steadying breath).
- Nomadic Avoidance: Despite maintaining a registered address in New Kourou, Lexa spends most nights in tents along the Trade Route. She fears stillness and avoids forming attachments, often vanishing for weeks without word.
Motivations and Goals
Map the hidden veins of VOI 700 D, keep lifelines open between settlements, and one day publish an atlas that’s as honest as the wind—dedicated to her parents.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Lexa converts wilderness and back-alleys into advantages: faster travel clocks, safer exfil, ambush avoidance. Reward good planning (chalk marks, wind calls) with shortcuts, surprise negation, or +1 situational bonuses on group stealth/movement. Use her armband and sealed pouches to open doors or misdirect foes. Let her Honga friendships unlock neutral ground or cultural insights in frontier regions.
