FIRETOWN TIER-1 ENERGY REDISTRIBUTION NODE (ERN)

Overview

Commissioned in early 2627 to harness Ralar Volcano’s steam output, Firetown’s Tier-1 ERN was one of only two exohuman full-flux charging hubs in the Beta Age on VOI 700 D (the other was Morningstar's Tier-1 ERN) and remains the sole full-flux-charging hub in the Gamma Age.

It conditions geothermal power into a 3.1 GW/160 s ignition burst followed by a tapering feed (500 → 50 MW over 6–12 h) to fully recharge Quantum Fusion Batteries. Under joint oversight by the New Kourou Robotics Syndicate (operator), Firetown’s Contact Person, and the Free State of Settlers (shareholders), it balanced high-capacity bursts with steady local-grid support. After the Peace Treaty and the funding of the Federal Confederation, oversight passed to the Federal Allotment Agency.

Architectural Significance

  • Materials: Heat-resistant volcanic-stone cladding, reinforced heat-sink concrete, braided steam-line superalloys
  • Design: Compact, fortress-like substation built into a ravine wall — minimizes thermal loss, maximizes access to steam tunnels
  • Energy Flow: Central manifold channels geothermal steam into turbine arrays; layered capacitor halls store burst energy
  • Intent: Engineered for extreme temperature differentials—thermal anchors and phase-change buffers protect capacitor banks from overheat

Building Structure

Ground Floor – Steam & Power Conversion

  • Steam Inlet Portals (4): High-pressure conduits tapping geothermal wells
  • Turbine Array: Four 2.5 GW turbines driving generator rotors
  • High-Pressure Manifold: Distributes steam to backup reactors and surge dampeners
  • Control Room: Elevated booths with reinforced blast windows (sealed “glimpses” of Ralar’s smoke) and live-feed gauges
  • Restrooms (2): Insulated stalls with waste-heat recovery sinks

Mezzanine – QFB Charging Deck

  • QFB Docks (10): Rail-guided cradles for cold-QFB ignition cycles
  • Capacitor Vaults (3): Graphene-infused supercapacitor banks for burst buffering
  • Operator Consoles: Holo-interfaces to sequence ignition and taper feeds

Basement – Cooling & Support Systems

  • Water-Loop Radiators: Circulate cooled brine to maintain capacitor temps at < 25 °C
  • Surge Dampener Chambers: Contain emergency steam dumps and pressure relief valves
  • Backup Generators: Two diesel gensets with microbial-cell modules for up to 48 h of critical power

Exterior Grounds

  • High-Security Perimeter: Electrified alloy-mesh fencing surrounding all exterior operations
  • Steam Access Ramp: Secured path for maintenance crews to adjacent power plant tunnels
  • Drop-Zone Platform: Covered loading bay for Hoo-drawn courier carts delivering QFBs
  • Erosion Control Trenches: Channel runoff from ice melt and steam condensation

Look and Feel

A low, pulsing roar of steam resonates through the chamber as Ralar’s distant rumble underscores every breath. Golden lamplight glints off braided superalloy pipes, and warm mist clings to polished concrete floors. Technicians in heat-shielded gear trace laser-sharp readouts on control mirrors, steam valves hissing in their wake. The scent of sulfur and ozone mixes with hot metal tang, while outside the scorched ravine walls, a faint glow of molten fissures hints at the volcano’s power. Even as conduits hum with gigawatt pulses, a hush descends before each ignition sequence—an electric heartbeat felt in every capacitor bank.

Roles and Responsibilities

Beta Age:

  • ERN Director (1): Oversees capacity scheduling and safety protocols
  • Lead Turbine Technician (1): Manages steam-turbine maintenance and manifold integrity
  • Charge Engineers (3): Execute QFB ignition cycles and log energy curves
  • Systems Analyst (1): Monitors AI-assisted surge control and thermal feedback
  • Maintenance Bots (5): The Maintenance Bots are autonomous units for conduit inspection and valve recalibration
  • Guarding Bots (2): The Guarding Bots Patrol perimeter sensors and lockdown controls
  • Cleaning Bot (1): The Cleaning Bot keeps ash and mineral residue cleared from floor channels

Gamma Age:

  • ERN Director (1): Oversees capacity scheduling, safety protocols, and treaty compliance
  • Lead Turbine Technician (1): Manages steam-turbine maintenance and manifold integrity
  • Charge Engineers (3): Execute QFB ignition cycles and log energy curves
  • Systems Analyst (1): Monitors AI-assisted surge control and thermal feedback
  • Maintenance Crew (5): The staff of the Maintenance Crew conduits inspection and valves recalibration
  • Cleaning Staff (2): The cleaning staff keeps ash and mineral residue cleared from floor channels

Public Access & Operations

  • Access: Restricted — no civilian entry
  • Operational Hours: 24/7 full-flux readiness, with maintenance downtimes scheduled at treaty-mandated windows
  • Delivery Schedule: Three daily QFB cycles aligned with shift turnovers

Security Measures

Beta Age

  • High-Security Fence: Electrified alloy-mesh fencing surrounding all exterior operations
  • Guarding Trooper Patrols: A local unit of the Guarding Troopers, assigned to Firetown's energy sector; rotate every 6 hours
  • Guarding Bot–Secured Entry: A stationary Guarding Bot scans credentials and stands watch; it is equipped with reinforced shielding and a Guarding Troopers Stun Gun. It is accompanied by a Combat Drone.
  • Emergency Lockdown Protocol: Triggered in case of system breach, fusion instability, or sabotage
  • Emergency Reactors: Diesel and microbial cell backups can power critical controls for up to 72 hours

Gamma Age

  • Perimeter Fence: Electrified alloy-mesh fencing surrounding all exterior operations
  • Restricted Access: Only authorized personnel are allowed to access
  • Exit Inspections: Employees undergo inspections at the end of their shifts to prevent sabotage or theft.
  • Analog Alert System: An Analog Alarm System linked to the Local Sheriff’s Office for immediate response to emergencies or security breaches.
  • Deputy Patrols: Regular patrols by Local Sheriff Deputies ensure compliance and deter unauthorized activities.

Player Interaction Possibilities

  • Deliver empty QFB frames and collect charged units at the drop-zone
  • Get assigned as staff to the Facility by the Federal Allotment Agency (Gamma Age only)
  • Apply for a Charge Engineer apprenticeship under NKRS supervision (Beta Age only)
  • Book a maintenance audit with the ERN Director for industrial clients (Beta Age only)

Illegal Interactions

  • Sabotage surge dampeners to trigger an overpressure event
  • Bribe a Guarding Bot’s AI node to smuggle an unregistered QFB onto the rails (Beta Age only)
  • Hack control mirrors to mask unauthorized charge cycles (Beta Age only)

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

Adventure Hook for the Beta Age

  • Power Heist – A group of fraudsters plans to intercept a batch of recalibrated QFBs during transfer to the Tier‑1 hub nearby Morningstar. The PCs are hired to prevent the heist or quietly assist in rerouting the shipment, depending on their client.

Adventure Hook for the Gamma Age

  • Infrastructure Gambit – After the Jane Mendoza Gang’s brazen heist of a high-value QFB convoy from the Federal Courier Service, whispers reach the Federal Sheriff that they’re planning an even bolder strike: simultaneous ambushes of Firetown’s Tier-1 ERN and its Quantum Fusion Recalibration Station to seize the very infrastructure needed to charge and tune their stolen batteries. The Sheriff quietly enlists the PCs to plug into local informant networks, reinforce key chokepoints around both facilities, and foil the gang’s plan — whether by laying traps in the steam vents, disrupting their comms, or turning the tables with a counter-raiding party of their own.
