FEDERAL HOSTEL AND SALOON OF FIRETOWN

Overview

  • Location: Public Services Ring, Firetown
  • Address: SW Public Services Ring Road 1
  • Surroundings: Adjacent to the Federal Allotment Center of Firetown, near Firetown’s Entertainment District, a short walk from taverns and gaming halls

The Federal Hostel and Saloon (FHAS) of Firetown is one of several standardized FHAS facilities across the Federal Confederation. Like its counterparts, it combines traveler accommodations with a regulated cultural venue.

The system of FHAS institutions was introduced in 2633 under the Communard Government Administration of Supreme Councilor Aisha Patel. It was established in line with the Peace Treaty of 2631, emphasizing reduced energy consumption, resource conservation, and communal ownership. The FHAS replaced the free-market pubs and hotels of the Beta Age, ensuring equitable access and standardized cultural spaces for all citizens.

The Firetown FHAS has a distinctive role within this system: its location in the Ralar Region on the Dark Side makes it a critical hub for transient workers, Federal Courier Service staff, and visitors to the Entertainment District. Its hostel dormitories provide essential rest in the perpetual darkness, while its saloon serves as one of the few regulated communal spaces in a settlement marked by unrest and black-market activity.

Since 2634, the FHAS network has also served as part of the distribution system of the Weekly Gazette, giving citizens access to the Confederation’s official news medium alongside its cultural and social functions.

Architectural Significance

  • Construction Materials: Volcanic stone quarried from the nearby Ralar Volcano
  • Floors: Two-storey structure with hostel dormitories above and saloon/reception below
  • Design Purpose: Built as a windowless fortress to retain heat and withstand -20°C conditions
  • Heating & Lighting: Connected to the Federal Geothermal Power Plant for district heating; lit by candles and torches, with occasional use of Luminofera Dualis

Building Structure

Ground Floor

  • Reception Area: Manages hostel check-ins and verifies Allotment Cards for saloon entry
  • Saloon: Cultural and social hall seating up to 60 patrons per session; less rigidly structured than other settlements
  • Dining Room: No cooking; guests consume meals from the Federal Canteen or their Weekly Food Basket rations in a communal setting
  • Toilets: Men’s and women’s facilities equipped with the AuroraSan System

Second Floor

  • Shared Rooms: Two dormitories with 30 double beds each (capacity: 60 travelers)
  • Service & Storage Areas: Bedding and cleaning supply storage plus staff break room

Look and Feel

The Firetown FHAS feels like a sturdy bunker against the Dark Side cold. Thick stone walls, dim torchlight, and muffled saloon sounds create a heavy but communal atmosphere. Travelers and citizens alike use the saloon as a rare place of warmth and respite.

Hostel Facilities

  • Capacity: 60 travelers in shared dormitories
  • Typical Guests: Federal Courier Service employees, industrial workers, and government staff on assignment
  • Dining: Midday meals at the Federal Canteen; breakfast and dinner via Weekly Food Basket rations consumed communally

Saloon as Cultural Hub

The saloon is vital in Firetown’s perpetual darkness, doubling as both a leisure space and cultural venue.

  • Performances: GAIA-curated music, cabaret, and storytelling from local amateur artists
  • Allotment Cards: Citizens may claim two drinks daily, with a maximum of one alcoholic beverage
  • Special Note (Firetown): Unlike other Federal Saloons, citizens here are not required to pre-book time slots due to the settlement’s irregular rhythms
# Label Style & Flavour Note (ABV) Quick-Play Table Quirk Allotment Limit
