"CROPLIGHT LEMUR" (YALI-MUUN)
Overview
The Croplight Lemur — called “Yali-Muun” by the Orlanda Tribe — is a small, arboreal pollinator native to the canopy of the Orlanda Marshes and the adjacent Tropical Forest of Asari on VOI 700 D. Unlike primates, it has a distinct mammalian body plan with bat-like wings for short silent glides between trees.
Camouflaged in muted bark tones and active during mist-rich light shifts, Yali-Muun travel in tight family groups and play a crucial role in pollinating canopy flora without drawing the attention of aerial predators.
Physique and Appearance
- Size: Body 40–50 cm; tail 50–70 cm
- Weight: 2.2–3.2 kg
- Fur: Short, matte gray-brown with irregular bark-like mottling (no color accents)
- Head: Rounded with a short muzzle; wide, leaf-shaped pinnae (ears) for directional hearing
- Eyes: Large, dark, reflective; vertical pupils adapted to twilight (photorealistic, not brightly colored)
- Fore/Rear Limbs: Long, slender digits with semi-translucent grip pads and retractable hook claws for wet bark
- Wings: Bat-like membranous patagia stretched between elongated forelimbs and body; leathery, semi-translucent; fold flat while perching
- Tail: Prehensile, roughened underside for secure wrap around branches
- Feeding Apparatus: Fine whisker filaments around the mouth and a long flexible tongue for nectar and pollen collection
Special Features
- Silent Glide: Low-noise wing membrane reduces rustle during short traverses
- Counter-Shade Camouflage: Matte, non-reflective coat breaks silhouette in mist and shadow
- Nectar Filaments: Whisker filaments trap pollen and wick nectar without damaging fragile flowers
- Moist-Grip Pads: Maintain adhesion on mossy, wet surfaces common in the Marsh canopy
Game Mechanics
- Armor Class (AC): 13
- Hit Points (HP): 14
- Speed: 25 ft. (climb), 30 ft. (glide; see Glide rules)
Actions
- Glide Hop. The Yali-Muun launches from a perch to glide up to 40 ft. in a straight or gently curving path, ignoring difficult terrain between takeoff and landing.
- Nip (melee). +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1d4 bludgeoning. Used only if cornered.
Special Abilities
- Glide (Movement). With 10 ft. run-up or from a higher perch, the Yali-Muun may move horizontally up to 4× its drop (max 40 ft.) and descend at least 5 ft.; landing requires a DC 10 Acrobatics check on narrow branches.
- Canopy Camouflage. Advantage on Stealth checks when motionless on bark, moss, or lichen-covered branches.
- Sure-Grip. Advantage on checks to resist being dislodged by wind or branch sway.
- Pollinator’s Touch. After feeding in a grove, local flowering plants within 20 ft. have increased fruit set and seed viability for 24 hours (DM flavor boon).
Behavior
- Diet: Nectar, pollen, soft fruit, occasional sap
- Social Structure: Family groups of 4–8 with one or two breeding adults and helpers
- Activity Pattern: Crepuscular; most active at first mist rise and pre-fogfall
- Vocalizations: Soft trills and chirrups for contact; brief clicks during group glides
Survival Strategies
- Perch-Freeze: Freezes and folds wings tight to mimic a knot of bark when raptors pass overhead
- Staggered Glides: Group moves in offsets to avoid drawing predator focus
- Scent-Masking Groom: Uses resinous leaf rubs to reduce scent signature
Reproduction and Lifecycle
- Breeding Season: Late fogfall
- Offspring: Typically 1–2 pups
- Parental Care: Pups clinging belly-side for ~6 weeks; alloparenting common
- Training: Juveniles learn safe glide corridors and feeding routes from elders
- Lifespan: Estimated 12–15 years
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
- Canopy Signals: A sudden hush of Yali-Muun calls can foreshadow a nearby aerial predator or ambush above the party.
- Guide in the Mist: Tracking a family’s staggered glide path can lead PCs to hidden canopy trails or safe crossings.
- Delicate Rescue: A fallen pup tangled in lianas creates a tense, non-combat set piece with social rewards from the Orlanda.
- Foraging Window: Parties seeking rare canopy ingredients gain advantage if they move during the Yali-Muun’s active feeding periods.
