AKZNA

Overview

The Akzna is a social, macro-arachnid native to the western slopes of the Tijonara Mountains in the Tijonara Region on the Desert Side of VOI 700 D. Far from an Earth analogue, the Akzna has evolved stone-like scale armor, resonant communication organs, and crystal-forming venom that together make it a master of dune ambushes and pack hunts.

Aknza packs (3–7 individuals) coordinate through subsonic clicks that pass through sand, forming sinkhole traps and driving prey into prepared kill zones. Their longevity (up to a century) produces “matriarchs” that lead multi-generational packs and remember migration paths, safe burrows, and water caches across seasons.

Physique and Appearance

  • Shoulder Height: Hand-high (~10 cm)
  • Body Length: 30–40 cm
  • Weight: Up to 500 g
  • Armor: Overlapping desert-stone scutes (bioceramic-chitin composite) with hairline “fault veins” that flex and self-heal microfractures
  • Coloration: Dune-beige to iron-red, often banded; matte finish to reject glare
  • Legs: Six powerfully muscled legs (tripod gait options) optimized for sprinting on hot sand and silent sub-surface “sand-swim” burrowing
  • Forelimbs (Pincers): Offset scissor-arms with asymmetric blades—one serrated “saw” and one crushing “anvil” for shearing and pinning
  • Tail & Stinger: Telescoping tail with a prismatic barb; venom reservoir is faceted and semi-translucent, faintly refractive in harsh light
  • Sensory Crest: A low dorsal vibro-crest of stiff setae that reads dune tremors and funnels resonance between packmates
  • Speed: Sprint 20 km/h on surface; short bursts through loose sand when submerged

Special Features:

  • Crystal-Venom (“Glassmaker’s Bite”): Neurotoxic + mineralizing cocktail that vitrifies blood plasma at the wound, stiffening joints and magnifying subsequent cutting damage
  • Resonant Sand-Talk: Subsonic clicks propagated through sand; packs “see” each other’s positions via tremor echoes
  • Thermal Shedding Scutes: Scales micro-vent heat; can press flat to ground to wick heat into cooler sub-surface layers
  • Sinkhole Crafting: Burrow rings collapse into soft basins that bowl prey toward waiting pincers

Game Mechanics

  • Armor Class (AC): 15 (hardened stone-scutes)
  • Hit Points (HP): 35
  • Speed: 40 ft. (burrow), 20 ft. (land)

Attacks:

  • Scissor Pincers: +5 to hit, 1d8+2 slashing. If both blades hit the same target this round, the target is Grappled (DC 13 STR to escape).
  • Glassmaker Sting: +6 to hit, 1d6 piercing + 1d6 poison. On a failed DC 12 CON save, the target is Crystallized for 1 minute: speed −10 ft., and takes +2 slashing damage from each subsequent cutting or slashing hit (save ends at end of each of its turns).
  • Burrow Ambush: If the Akzna attacks from beneath sand, it has advantage on its first attack this encounter.

Special Abilities:

  • Pack Tactics: Advantage on attack rolls if at least one allied Akzna is within 5 ft. of the target.
  • Hardened Carapace: Resistance to piercing damage from natural or nonmagical weapons.
  • Venom Immunity: Immune to paralytic and crystallizing toxins.
  • Resonant Sense: Advantage on Perception checks to detect ground vibrations, hidden burrows, or approaching footsteps within 60 ft. (sand/loose gravel only).

Behavior

  • Diet: Small to medium vertebrates; opportunistic scavenger after dust storms
  • Social Structure: Cooperative packs (3–7) led by an experienced matriarch; juveniles apprentice for 1–2 seasons
  • Territory: Web of shallow burrows connected to a deeper cool vault used at midday

Hunting Tactics:

  • Ambush Basins: Packs pre-weakening the substrate, creating subtle slide bowls; the first strike is the sting, the second is the saw/anvil shear
  • Flank & Funnel: One Akzna reveals itself to redirect prey into the basin while the others hold position beneath sand
  • Cut, Then Crystallize: Pincers open wounds, sting slows, then repeated slashes exploit the brittle tissue

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Reproductive Traits:

  • Egg Laying: Eggs are sealed in silica cocoons within cool vaults; hatch after ~6 months
  • Clutch Size: 20–50, but cannibalism among hatchlings and pack selection reduce numbers sharply
  • Parental Care: Matriarch and 1–2 subadults guard cocoons; surviving juveniles follow hunts to learn resonance cues

Lifespan and Growth:

  • Maturity: ~4 years
  • Lifespan: Up to 100 years; old scutes show sediment banding used by Natives to date drought cycles

Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters

  • Hidden Terrain: Treat prepared ambush basins as difficult terrain for creatures other than Akzna; DC 14 Perception to spot before entering
  • Targeted Debilitation: Glassmaker Sting reduces mobility and increases cutting damage; a rising threat if not addressed
  • Sound Strategy: Loud movement on dunes can draw packs; careful, low-impact travel (padded footwear, staggered pacing) can reduce encounters
  • Harvest Hooks: Venom (alchemical crystallizer), scute lamellae (light, heat-shedding armor inserts), and silica cocoons (insulating vessels) fetch high prices
