The Vazhak I and Vazhak II expeditions were daring scientific missions launched during the Beta Age in an attempt to explore Vazhak — one of the darkest, coldest, and most enigmatic regions of VOI 700 D. Both expeditions originated in Firetown within the Ralar Region and aimed to cross the eastern border into the ice-covered unknown of the Dark Side.
Vazhak I, launched in March 2627, was led by Professor Kito Jaroslav, a geologist from the Last Frontier University in New Kourou, and accompanied by Francoise McEnroe, a skilled Free State Courier Rider and wildlife guard. The expedition's goal was to map the border areas between Ralar and Vazhak, search for signs of life, and push as far into the region as resources allowed. The team of 20 included 15 scientists, four armed guarding troopers, and one courier rider.
In November 2627, three months after crossing the Vazhak border, all contact with Vazhak I was lost. No trace of the expedition — equipment, remains, or data — has ever been recovered.
Vazhak II was launched in early 2628 to locate the missing team and complete their objectives. It was led by Professor Rosanne Fernandez, a former assistant to Jaroslav, with security led by Guarding Trooper Tony Bergmann. Despite similar staffing, only four members of the 20-person team survived.
Both expeditions began in Firetown and followed an eastward trajectory across the frigid borderlands into the heart of the Vazhak Region. The landscape became increasingly unstable, featuring extreme temperature drops, jagged crevasses, and magnetic storm zones.
According to survivor reports from Vazhak II, the team encountered:
The most tragic incident of Vazhak II was the “Zathurr Event” — the first known encounter with the enigmatic predator referred to as Zathurr or the Vazhak Maw. This lifeform, which has never been directly studied, is believed to dwell deep beneath the ice fields.
It is assumed that Vazhak I met the same fate.
Each expedition team consisted of 20 members:
Despite their tragic outcomes, the Vazhak Expeditions yielded two significant scientific results. Vazhak II succeeded in producing the first accurate map of the border region between the Ralar and Vazhak Regions, contributing foundational geographical knowledge for future studies. Additionally, the expedition documented the first and only known records of Zathurr (The Vazhak Maw). No other species were identified or recovered during the mission, further highlighting the region’s extreme environmental hostility.
The Vazhak Expeditions remain the only known Exohuman attempts to explore the inner Vazhak Region. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Vazhak I and the chilling outcomes of Vazhak II cast a long shadow over future exploration efforts.
Following the signing of the Peace Treaty in 2631, all further expeditions were formally prohibited. As a result, Vazhak remains a terra incognita, feared, respected, and largely avoided.
The Zathurr Event is considered as one of the most horrifying known incidents in Exohuman exploratory history.
The Vazhak I & II Expeditions offer rich material for survival horror, psychological thriller, or mystery-style campaigns. Dungeon Masters can frame adventures around the doomed expeditions, missing data, or forbidden research into Zathurr and the deeper secrets of the Dark Side.
Use Vazhak's unstable terrain, cold isolation, and magnetic interference to challenge players mechanically and narratively. Encounters may rely on psychological tension, hallucinations, or natural hazards just as much as physical threats.
