VAZHAK REGION
Overview
The Vazhak Region is an uncharted and highly dangerous expanse on the northern edge of the Dark Side of VOI 700 D. Covering an unknown area, Vazhak remains shrouded in mystery, extreme weather, and hazardous terrain.
To the south and east, the Vazhak Region borders the Ralar Region, its vast, unstable ice fields stretching endlessly beyond the known world. Due to its hostile conditions, neither Exohumans nor Native Tribes have attempted to settle the area. Native myths paint Vazhak as a land of cursed ice and wandering spirits, a place forsaken by the stars. Many Exohumans use the word “Vazhak” as a synonym for the entire Dark Side, emphasizing its unforgiving nature.
Expeditions into the region have proven deadly. The first recorded Exohuman expedition in 2627 vanished without a trace, leading to a rescue mission in 2628. The second expedition returned with only four survivors out of an eight-person team, their reports filled with fragmented accounts of strange environmental anomalies, powerful magnetic storms, and deep crevasses that seemingly opened and closed at will. No trace of the first expedition was ever found—no bodies, equipment, or wreckage—fueling speculation about what fate befell them. No further expeditions have been attempted, due in part to the restrictions imposed by the Peace Treaty between Exohumans and the Alliance of Native Tribes.
Since only 10–15% of the region has been surveyed, its true geography remains unknown. It is speculated that hidden seas, lakes, or even mountains could exist beyond the ice fields, but no one knows for certain. What is clear is that Vazhak represents the final frontier of the Dark Side, a region where reality itself seems to bend and where the planet holds its darkest secrets.
Geography and Landscapes
The Vazhak Region is defined by its extreme isolation, unpredictable terrain, and environmental anomalies. Unlike the geothermal-heated landscapes of the Ralar Region, Vazhak is an unrelenting ice desert with unstable terrain and a near-complete absence of life.
Ice Fields and Crevasses
- Vazhak Ice Fields – The dominant feature of the region, these endless frozen expanses are treacherous and constantly shifting, riddled with deep fissures that make exploration nearly impossible.
- Ghost Crevasses – Reported by the second expedition, these cracks in the ice appear and disappear suddenly, making navigation extremely hazardous. Survivors described falling into a “void of nothingness” before waking on the surface again.
- Magnetic Storm Zones – Vast areas where highly unstable magnetic fields interfere with navigation, compasses, and Exohuman equipment. Survivors reported hallucinations, disorientation, and “hearing voices in the wind.”
Possible Unexplored Features
- Unknown Seas or Lakes – Based on planetary surveys, some geologists speculate that subglacial lakes or hidden seas could exist beneath the ice, heated by geothermal vents or planetary friction.
- Uncharted Mountains – There is speculation that a range of mountains lies beyond the Vazhak Ice Fields, but no direct observations have confirmed this theory.
Flora
No known plant life exists in the Vazhak Region. Unlike the Ralar Region, which has geothermal caves supporting fungal and bioluminescent species, Vazhak's frozen wastelands are devoid of any biological markers. If life exists, it may be deep beneath the ice, inaccessible to current explorers.
Fauna
Due to its extreme conditions, Vazhak was believed to be devoid of life. However, limited evidence gathered from the 2628 expedition suggests that certain organisms might have adapted to its hostile landscape. These creatures rely on unique survival strategies, taking advantage of scarce but vital food sources.
- Zathurr (Native Name – Exohuman name: Vazhak Maw) – A massive, enigmatic predator believed to lie dormant beneath the ice, waiting for long periods between meals. It ambushes prey using thermal detection and slow metabolic cycles, surviving on migratory creatures, drifting ice-carcasses, or scavenged organic deposits.

- Unidentified Glacial Organisms – Expedition records mention fleeting bioluminescent flickers beneath the ice and unusual movement patterns in the deeper trenches. Some theories suggest that microbial life or unknown cold-adapted species might exist in the uncharted regions of Vazhak. However, no physical samples have been recovered.
With 80-90% of Vazhak unexplored, many questions remain unanswered. It is unknown whether larger species exist deeper in the region or if the Vazhak Maw is truly the apex predator of the area.
Population
There are no known Native Tribes or Exohuman settlements within the Vazhak Region. Native myths refer to Vazhak as a “land of death”, a cursed place where the spirits of the lost roam eternally. The total absence of even nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes supports the belief that no intelligent life has ever lived there.
Tactical Advice for Dungeon Masters
Vazhak is a perfect setting for horror, survival, and deep-space mystery campaigns. As a truly unknown and unexplored region, it offers endless opportunities for Dungeon Masters to introduce anomalies, lost civilizations, or hidden horrors beyond the known world.
Exploration and Survival Challenges
- Unstable Ice Fields – Players risk falling into crevasses that “move on their own.” Navigation requires constant checks, and failure can result in being swallowed by the ice.
- Magnetic Storms – Equipment failures, distorted senses, and even hallucinations make survival nearly impossible.
- The Curse of Vazhak – Native myths of wandering spirits could be based on real dangers — or something beyond comprehension lurking beneath the ice.
Mysteries and Hidden Dangers
- The Lost Expedition – What really happened to the 2627 team? Are they still alive, buried in ice, or something worse?
- Unknown Lifeforms – Is something alive beneath the surface? Are the “ghost crevasses” natural, or the work of an unseen predator?
- Ancient Structures – Who had lived here before the tidal lock?
- The Maw Awakens – If the players disturb the ice in the wrong location, they may encounter Zathurr, the Vazhak Maw.
